, birmingham, alabama. clark, when is a person categorized as homeless? well, the most important thing is to recognize that when a person lacks a permanent, fixed residence, they meet the category of homeless. now, there are a number of temporary arrangements that people have; for instance, it's estimated that roughly 1.6 million people are living in transitional or shelters, and they also meet the definition of homeless. so it's-we're looking for people who have permanent, fixed residence, and if you don't have that, then you're defined as homeless. and dr. milby, can you sort of take us through those categories a little bit? well, there're, there're lots of services that are provided for the homeless, from basic emergency shelters that just provide overnight stay, and people have to leave after-usually serve breakfast and then have to leave after. there are shelters that are more permanent and give people a chance to find more permanent housing. there are shelters also for women with children, for example

there's actually a wonderful company here in birmingham that was family- owned, has grown--they havebout 100 employees--and at any given time have eight to ten percent of their employee base of people with disabilities. and they have an occupational therapist on staff. - what does the company do? - they are a mass mailing company. they, next to the post office, handle more mail than anybody else in the state of alabama. - and so at the skill level of some of these kids, they're able to give them tasks. - exactly. so they have young adults, 21 and over, that they work with, and then they also have some older adults that they work with. they have two individuals that have autism, they have one man with a severe hearing impairment, they've had employees that have had strokes that have returned to work. their occupational therapist looks at their worksite accommodations and makes those accommodations for them if they need it. they might need some type of schedule for the day if they have cognitive issues--just something to follow and keep them on task. so it's companies like that, i thin

and i interviewed a number of other women in birmingham, and handful of people in montgomery. use a lot of images that i found in the archives, whether historians may have asked a question instantly talk about what happened to them but they never really followed up. i looked at court documents and tried to get court proceedings, trial transcripts, stuff like that. i got a lot of material in a tallahassee case in that regard. a lot of the trials and cases that are right about in mississippi, the transcripts went missing or were thrown away or destroyed after many years. i talked to old attorneys on some of these cases. i have not spoken to any of the essays, although a couple of them are still imprisonein prison for the crimes. that they committed after they were acquitted. but i was sort of afraid to talk to them. so there was a lot of digging through the archives, through court records, old newspapers. and talking to a lot of people on the ground. >> didn't the white wives get upset enough with their husbands that that would stop the raids, or not? >> not that i found. though

well, one of the innovative approaches, i think, is the kind of thing we've been using in birmingham, where people who are homeless-and we're, we're especially focusing on people who have crack cocaine dependence and are homeless and also have nonpsychotic co-occurring disorders. so these people are entered into an intensive treatment program, and they're offered housing that is abstinent-contingent. that's-they're modest apartments. they are provided with a box of food and flatware and cookware, and it's a furnished apartment. handed the key, and then we tell them, tomorrow morning the van'll pick you up and bring you into treatment. make sure you be there, and-but next week you need to start giving us clean urine specimens in order to stay here. so we call that abstinent -contingent housing. and that's been very effective. so it's dependent on their sobriety, on their staying off of drugs. and participating in treatment actively. and the interesting thing is-and people forget this part, but it's very important-if they are not abstinent, then we transport them to a secure shelter, bu
