. >> item one, hearing of the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender seniors. supervisor campos: thank you for hearing this item today. let me begin by thanking my colleagues at it, supervisor scott wiener and supervisor christina olive new -- olague, who have helped. this is a very important issue, and i want to thank everyone for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here with us. i think it is a testament to how engaged not only the lgbt community, the entire san francisco community is, and i am very proud of that. there are about 25,000 lgbt people who are 65 years or older. live in san francisco. in fact, given the baby boomer generation, that generation is aging, and we know that number will continue to increase. this is often a population, lgbt seniors, who, frankly, and i say this as an lgbt man, we do not get -- i know it has taken some time perhaps to get the attention this issue deserves, but the reason why i am so proud that we are here is because we have the lgbt members of the board of supervisors working together to make sure that we shed

applause] tom amiano, who has been a historic figure and trailblazer, coming from the lesbian, gay, bisexualansgendered community. [applause] also, our newest elected official, supervisor cohen, with her election last november at age 32, is the youngest african-american ever to be elected to the board of supervisors. and to put out their the quality of the services to our common not only are a lesbian, gay, and bisexualmunity, but all of the community of san francisco. this is one of the most important programs we have had introduced to our city, and it will continue to be so. this is a reflection of our commitment. this $1.8 million supplemental will be aimed at making sure the level of services that had been promised already this year will be maintained to the end of the fiscal year. while we figure out what the long-term challenge is for all of us, and we have got to figure that out. we have got to do it together. we have to bring everybody to the table to figure out what we do in the next year. but it is one of the challenges that i and my staff, working with our budget director and all of the different community-based agencies and our public health department, along with the board of supervisors, are willing to meet, willing to take on. because it is a program that we know has been effective. it has saved lives. it has increased the quality of life for so many people because of the kind of care

with rainbow world fund, we're international humanitarian aid agency based in the lesbian, gay, bisexualand transgender community. we work within our community to educate people about issues of world need in humanitarian aid. as we raise our communities consciousness, we raise funds to support committed the relief efforts and development projects around the world. we are gay and straight people coming together to heal the world. our work good -- work focuses on when my new medication, hunter, safe drinking water act says, global hiv, and disaster relief. we have projects that we support in cambodia, haiti, honduras, guatemala, south africa, we have also worked to help with a number of humanitarian aid disasters around the world, such as the tsunami in southeast asia a few years ago, hurricane katrina, and burst recently, we held out with the earthquake and tsunami that hit northern japan in march but this year, we're dedicating the tree to the victims and survivors of that disaster. republican party has become increasingly less known for equality for those you are gay lesbian, bisexual, where transgendered. republicans are very underrepresented there. there are republicans to people generally assumed to be day. the republican party will continue to be ok with that until they say they are happy about that. you get support. i am going to be married to my partner jim in july in massachusetts, and frankly i have gotten a lot of very, very positive comments from my democratic colleagues, but on the republican side essentially, their attitude is that they understand that you cannot help it but please do not act like you are happy about it and hide it, so if you are a republican and act ashamed about it, you can survive. i never seen a case in my 32 years in congress in which the fact that someone was gay or lesbian was used to make them vote in a way differently with one exception, as there have been a number of people, most republicans but a couple of democrats, who assumed they were gay or lesbian who were not voting supportive of equal rights for gay and lesbian people
