decade ago, gave a speech about how there is not a liberal america were a conservative america a black america or a white america, but a united states of america. and i say this because i have seen it in my own life. in a nation they gave someone like me a chance, because i grew up in hawaii, the melting pot of racism and customs and i made illinois my home. a state of small towns and rich farmlands and the world's great cities. and a microcosm of a country where democrats and republicans and independents and everybody shares certain bedrock values. we have pointed out more than once some have said that my president efforts have not sufficed. but we tell them that they're not just many. but also there is proof that the vision is misguided. naÏve. but there are too many people in this town who actually benefit from gridlock for us to any about it. and so i know it is tempting, but i think that the cynics are wrong and i believe that we are one people. and i still believe that together we can do great things, even when the odds are wrong.
