he is talking about this black hawk crew that was involved in the crash.n the crew chief in the back had been in the unit for a long time he references. very familiar with the area. very familiar with the routing structure. so they don't see experience as being an edm impairment to their ability to carry this out safely. he referenced this as a relative easy route, easy corridor to fly because you're flying down the center of the river, and talked about the maximum altitudes for the route, 200 feet sea level, and they know exactly on the map and visually understand where they are with relation to that route. he said it's a mission for aviation battalion and transport vip's on missions and these are flown every day on multiple aircraft as we see where the chopper was coming in the orange and the american airlines flight in the yellow, john, and he brought up the night vision goggles which is a big part of the story. perhaps we will learn more shortly. he said the crew had night goggles, probably using them, and they are a choice. we don't know definitively

well, there were 3 people on board that army black hawk helicopter. as of the latest update, authorities say they've recovered 27 bodies. we are expecting that number to grow as those efforts. those recovery efforts continue throughout the day. it's worth noting that the american airlines flight was a crj 700 aircraft. that's a pretty small regional jet. and it was operated by a subcontractor psa airlines. that's not entirely uncommon, especially on those regional jets. we understand the impact happened is that american flight was coming in for landing here it was washington national airport. that's when that collision happened. transportation secretary sean duffy said earlier that both aircraft, we're on standard flight pass. this impact happened, though, only at an altitude of a few 100 feet that would have made it almost impossible for that pilot of the american airlines flight to have any hope of any kind of recovery. transportation secretary duffy talked about the ongoing investigation and where they are going forward. >> i know the president tru

and the black hawk has, you know, substantial structure there. they also have a piece of metal that runs down the center of the windshield. and if the american jet was behind that structure, it is possible, particularly if they looked at the wrong target. the other, the third airplane, i'll call it, uh, it's possible by the time they realize that. oh my gosh, there's there's the american jet right in front of us. there's, uh, i'm a human factors aviation psychologist. so it takes several seconds for the human to respond. plus, here, the helicopter has got to respond. so it may well be that by the time they saw the american jet, they didn't have time to avoid it. we we talk about seeing a void, which is the standard for these kind of operations. and of course, the controllers are very busy, the pilots are busy. and normally this doesn't happen. but this night, um, things just went bad very, very badly. and that's what the the safety board will have to address. now, what they'll do is they'll look at the eye position of the two pilots and the black

will has to be focused on the black hawk's data recorder. and as i understand it, they don't have a voice recorder. so there's going to be a certain amount of of challenge to try and figure out why this flight crew performed the way they did. >> elizabeth just quickly, um, peter referred to whether or not the altimeter, which gives an idea of how high the helicopter is, whether it was not calibrated correctly. how common is it for an altimeter to to not be calibrated correctly? >> well, before every flight, we get the current barometric pressure reading with an update with our weather, and we would we would turn the the little dial on an altimeter to make sure that it's at the correct calibration per every single flight. so, um, short of a large pressure change in the middle of flight, uh, that if they did not take that step, that might have been an issue that could have put them off 100ft, maybe even more, depending on the change of barometric pressure. >> elizabeth. >> something that will come out in the investigation. >> yeah. elizabeth m
