black history museum. keep telling our stories. remind us of our history. congratulations. mr. speaker, i rise today to uplift black history month by celebrating my constituent, a lifelong teacher and a local historian in due page county, mglenette turner. she has dedicated herself to preserving the stories of the black resistance and multiracial coalition that is struggle against injustice. moving in 1968, she researched and studied due page county's history and participation in the underground railroad on organized network led by formerly enslaved african-americans resisting american chattel slavery. in 1979, miss turner published her first book "the undergrounds ares are in due -- railroad in due page county illinois." in it she reminds us in the past our country has faced moments that tested our courage and our integrity and that in those moments we need brave leaders to step up and resist injustice. may we remember the historians like miss turner will one day document how we stood up in this precise moment. on behalf of illinois' third congressional district, i commend glynette turner for her remarkable service as an educat

you cannot celebrate or recognize black history month, pride month. i think for many it feels like what what's the point of having those months? what's the point of having that declaration that we saw the president give out on friday recognizing black history month? and so it just feels like there is a lot up in the air, as folks are saying, how do we recognize the contributions of, particularly in february, black americans, if our government won't celebrate them? >> it feels like as i was watching this news unfold and talking to my sources on friday and going into the weekend, a lot of this was done in the haze of trying to comply with the executive orders that the administration put out in the first 24 hours of their existence, and part of me questioned, and i think the answer is probably yes. isn't the scramble and the potential overreach of over compliance sort of the point here? >> yeah, i think that a lot of groups, organizations, businesses, the government, they're just confused. what constitutes as dei and what doesn't. if we're sitting here s

people who talk about black history don't care if the country declares it black history month or not.orschoose. teachers teaching black history month need to be empowered to do that. they're not going to not teach you because trump says anything. the sad part is people who need black history the most out of one's tarrying about -- tearing apart dei. black history as american history. it's not separate. >> stephen: you are about to embark on your first stand up to her and how long? >> kamau: seven years. >> stephen: it's called "who's with me?." it kicks off every 13 in washington. what made you want to go on stage again? >> kamau: i thought i was retired after the pandemic than my wife pointed out i was walking around talking to myself and laughing. so she said, either you go back and do stand up or we need to get you evaluated mentally. i was like, stand up to her it is. >> stephen: you've been known for having the uncomfortable conversations. united shades of america had a lot of those uncomfortable conversations are always good. what you think the uncomfortable conversation america

thurman, that is definitely huge in black history, so what else would you say about black history month? >> it was definitely critical, in 1976, that established our history week at the time, he was getting with people who internalized racism on a very profound level and he was very disturbed because our history books did not include african american history, and he felt as though this was needed in order for people to have a better understanding of themselves. the other reality is that this was done, it was proclaimed in 1926 and that was during the height of the harlem renaissance, where you had these black poets, black authors, all these different people get re-evaluated in the black experience. for example, later, the racist was so internalized that if there was not a back door, they would create one to go through. this was the impact, and also this comes after these race riots, so from his point of view, absolutely necessary for people to get a very different understanding of who they were, their history, their accomplishments, in order to move forward as a people. as far as i'm co

day, black history month, which is now underway. gned a proclamation marking february as black history month, which is a bit confusing. the son of martin luther king jr. is speaking out today saying, quote, i object to trump disingenuously citing my father. he said of the attacks that quote, nothing could be further from my father's dream. how much progress do you think could be reversed if these policies continue and stay in place for the next four years? >> i think a lot of progress is going to be reversed, and all government agencies in the military, you know, it's interesting. i had an off the record conversation back in 2021 with female soldiers at fort hood, now fort cavazos in killeen, texas, and they told me that because of some of these programs that were put in place after the death of vanessa guillen that lost her life, that a lot of the jokes, a lot of the slights, a lot of the sexism and racism, not anything, you know, blatant that was already being addressed. but, but, but things that people could get away with before t
