back in the 1960s, one response was the creation of the radical and controversial black panther partyit was founded by men. some of its key leaders were women. one of them, my guest today, ericka huggins. she spent two years imprisoned and she became a symbol of the black panther struggle. looking around oakland today, has anything really changed? ericka huggins, welcome to hardtalk. well, thank you! it's an honour to be here. it is a great pleasure to have you on the show. i want to take you back to your years as a leader in the black panther party. when you reflect on those years now, does it feel to you like ancient history, or part of a struggle that continues till today? well, it certainly doesn't feel like ancient history because the life that i lived and that all of my friends lived at that time stays with me. it's a very pivotal part of my life. and i think that history sometimes... well, let me say, i have a particular view of history, that it doesn't happen in segments, that it flows like a river. so i'm still in the river and, um, doing the best i can to uplift humanity, li

carmichael supposing the black panther party loses the election in lowndes county, what do you proposehe name of the organization in lowndes county is not the black panther party. the symbol happens to be a black panther. the name is the lowndes county freedom organization. i'm very concerned about that, you see because americans, particularly white america have been referring to as a black panther party and that's their problem with sex and color. they do not refer to the alabama democratic party as the white rooster party, and that happens to be the emblem of that party. we are fighting for people to have free elections and that this government and this country has a responsibility to the black people in lowndes county to ensure them free elections. (tense music) - [jennifer] when it came to november, we were really worried about violence. and i said, "well, we could make billboards," that we then placed around the county on the land that was owned by black farmers who would give us permission to put them there. they said, "pull the lever for the black panther and then go home." don'

you talk a lot about the history of the oakland chapter of the black panther party, and you run that along side. sorry to do the parallel thing again. you run that alongside the tech of the time that also gets sort of swept up or mythologized as does part of the counterculture, you know, imagining steve jobs, though, he wasn't there yet dropping acid and you know, up with the apple computer. yeah like he did not happen but in reality we have people including people inside the stanford machine who are resist all of that. and i think that's a history that's not so well known and i'm wondering if you could say a bit about that moment when, you know, 1969, 1970, people are shooting up the computers. yeah, this was one of the most exciting parts of the research was discovering because a lot of the i want to say discovering because it's not like scholars don't work on these questions, but a lot of recently a lot of early computer publications have been digitized and put online. and so i got to go through those and look at these history of bomb attacks, attacks on u.s. data process infrastr
