blackberry managed just over 3%. the company hopes the z10 gets it back in the game, but there are bigger challenges. the new phones won't bring in the same highly profitable services revenue investors have come to expect and it's not yet clear whether blackberry will be able to sell new phones to make up the ground the old phones are losing. >> we don't deny that internationally this has been a successful device, it sold out in the middle east, and sold out in asia. doing very well in europe and surprising a lot of critics and we don't expect the same response in the u.s., but a better-than-expected launch. >> have you ever had a blackberry? >> no. >> did you ever think you would get a blackberry? >> no. >> why not? what do you think a blackberry is for? >> nothing negative. i just wanted something unique. >> blackberry hopes that's what this phone will deliver with its corporate friendly security features and new software for sharing photos, videos and apps. >> by next month, t-mobile and verizon will be offering t

don't be the killer, be the blackberry. would be looking at this, saying, here, look, we have a great device, go after the bread and butter, the enterprise user, go after the consumers and people who don't have these smart phones yet, and when you look at that kind of step mentality to, you know, roll out your device and go after different marketing segments, it's going to be clear, you know, where your pockets of interest will be and how you focus message from that point on. iphone, it's not probably the best way to go just yet. shibani: got to be something to somebody,,and the enterprise customer is out there with a lot of choices, android, microsoft phones, the iphone at that. i mean, what is black blackberrs strategy here? are they trying to get a foothold and grow the market share, or are they just trying to keep current customers from fleeing to other devices? those are two different strategies. >> absolutely, they are, but, you know, look at it this way. at the end of the 2012, blackberry had 2% market share in the u

it's important for blackberry.company that does the hardware, the software and the services on the back end, it really needs this device on the q10, which is coming in another few weeks, to be successful. this is going to be $19 on sale in ten days. verizon and t-mobile also expected to carry this device. sprint will be supporting blackberry device but not the z10 specifically. we are right now in a post smart phone era. not that smart phones are not important. blackberry market share dropped to 3.4% from 8% in 2011 just a year earlier. that's a big drop for the android. they really have a hold on the market. the eco systems make it tougher to peel way. the next appears to be devices that connect to phones. and the link is a little device that plugs into your car, communicates with your smart phone. it tells you when you brake hard. when you accelerate. what kind of mileage you're getting. they are backed by other big names in the valley and this sort of device and service, the new thing cropping up. not so much ju

blackberry shares are up this year.n nearly 14% this year and our next guest says apple may introduce a cheaper iphone which could add 50 bucks to its share primpt joining us on the cnbc "newsline" is an analyst at rbc capital markets. why do you believe that apple would introduce a cheaper iphone and also if they did it may jump sales, but would it also crush margins? >> yeah. good afternoon, guys. the reason that we are, you know, talking to clients about this event is, you know, our supply chain checks that apple is ramping up not just to launch an iphone 5s which is fairly well expected but also a lower form in the july time frame i would peg it out, and the reason you would want to do this is really simplistic. apple is fairly well saturated. a 40% plus share in the premium smartphone market. kind of the parts of the world where they are really struggling and don't have a presence, i would say is emerging markets where, you know, units are in the 350 million range and growing out at 35%. i think china and india and

it's blackberry versus apple.t talking numbers on that on the technical side with jeffrey and jeff killbert, founder of kkm financial and a cnbc contributor. jonathan, walk us through the chart. you like apple versus blackberry, based on the charts. why? >> we do like apple. so if we look back to january 2012, when apple first broke above that level, it went parabollic, but since the september peak, it's a 40% correction. that's where buyers expect to present themselves and they have. if we look at the weekly chart, 420 also represents the 150-week moving average. that's a moving average that's still rising and that's another supportive factor for the stock. and finally, if we look a little bit closer on the daily chart, we can see that apple has broken above a very defined six-month down trend. in addition, today, it's finally broken above its 50-day moving average for the first time since last october, so all that says to us it's moving higher, likely to the 500 area, potentially up to 550. >> jeff, what about t

obviously, blackberry would love to have their marketing muscle pump up this device.hat about when it goes on sale with verizon today? >> wool have to wait and see. i was excited to see what would happen with at&t. but if you went to some of the other stores such as best buy, it was the same issue. it was jammed in between two devices that were given away for free. there's a lot of other issues. i think verizon may give a little more effort to it, but there's a problem with carrier support right now. now they're kind of taking this with cautious skepticism. we'll have to see. >> when blackberry talks about having a keyboard equipped z10, it's falling short of wa we're seeing at samsung, let alone apple. how much does this depend on their ability to meet demand for these new devices? >> that is one of the problems. i think when they pitched this z10, there were a lot of new features. the problem is it was matched and competeded by the new devices coming out. there are a lot of users waiting for that keyboard unit to come out. there are a lot of people going to stores l

. >> i will be looking ahead at blackberry. i'll tell you three things you need to watch when the numbers come out. >> i'm taking a look at the wealthy and taxes. many feared the wealthy would stop spending and investing? are they the teflon taxpayers? >> stocks have been red hot this year outpacing the s&p 500. >> guys, view very much. >> word that we might get a definite open for the cyprus banks has helped us a little bit. let me give you a couple of bullet points. we have gotten a lot of noise from europe but it has not affected us that much. not so much that there is heavy selling today. just a lack of interest in heavy buying. 6:00 a.m. to noon. that is eastern time. we will be able to see knit realtime. i think that helped the markets lift a little bit. take a look at the major sectors here. utilities here, health care all on the upside. a lot of names doing well. financials, consumer staples. finally the money center banks. we have seen double digit declines in the last several days. >> down there again. slow drip down

it's calling themselves blackberry.hat will this revamp of blackberry's branding and the z10 phone mean for the business? >> for a couple generations they've tried to nail this consumer product that is a big, slick smartphone without the physical keyboard, although they still have those. they have not succeeded up until now. this one got some good buzz building on it. the reviews have been good. people like the hardware now. people like the software now. they sold more than expected in the initial launch in europe. we'll see what it does here. >> what about the htc one? that's a new version expected to be available any day. you brought that as well? >> htc 1. that is a very nice smartphone. it's similar to an iphone or samsung. i like it better than the samsung because it has a metal body instead of the plastic body. if you want something iphone-like, you don't want a plastic bodied phone. >> you can do everything on the phones? >> we're pretty much a parity with the phones. they all take good pictures. they all run pop
