. >>> as day broke in blacksburg people started leaving wreaths and flowers at the memorial in blacksburg, some five years after the shooting that killed 32 people on campus. our peggy fox is live at tech tonight where students were in class on april 16th for the first time since those shootings. >> reporter: well, it's been a busy day at the memorial, a lot of people coming by, some shedding tears. it is pretty overwhelming to look here and look at all these memorials, 32 and think about the lives lost here, but for me i'm a virginia tech alum and what i think about when i remember virginia tech is this, a beautiful day, the drill field, people having a good time. however, because of what happened on this day five years ago this campus has changed forever. we have seen people come by putting flowers down at the memorial, families who come every year on this day to remember the lives lost. we've talked to students today who are glad that classes resumed but also stopped by to remember the people and we've talked to former students here during the tragedy. a student from new york who came

fox 5's tom fitzgerald live on the campus in blacksburg tonight. >> reporter: a lot can change in five years, but here on the campus of virginia tech one thing ha has not changed was the -- that has not changed was the incredible show of spirit and unity among students and staff and people from the blacksburg community who came here today to join together in remembrance of the april 16th, 2007 shootings. we want to show you a little bit about what unfolded, a remarkable scene on this campus tonight as the names of the 32 victims were read aloud. a family representative came forward and lit a candle from a main ceremonial candle that has been burning for 24 hours. a short biography was read detailing the life of that individual as then that candle was brought to a memorial stone that was set up here at virginia tech as the main memorial to the victims of that tragic day. university officials tell us more than 7,000 people took part in this ceremony today and the crowd was spoken to by the governor of virginia bob mcdonnell and virginia tech president charles steger. >> there are questio

our peggy fox is live in blacksburg tonight for what's been a very solemn day on this campus. >> reporter: yeah, it certainly is, derek. everybody is getting ready for the vigil at 7:30. i've got my kendall. look at these students here. they're -- candle. look at these students here unwrapping these candles. they were donated five years ago anonymously 50,000 candles. so they're using these leftovers today. this donation is just one piece of how the country and surrounded, put their arms around virginia tech in this outpouring of support after the tragedy five years ago today. now at the memorial for those 32 victims today we saw people coming by all day putting flowers down, remembering those 27 students and five teachers who were all gunned down by seung-hui cho, two first i dod in a dorm and he -- died in a dorm and he came back two hours later killing the rest of them in norris hall. today, however, people say it is time to move on. there is certainly sadness to the lives lost, but also more of a remembrance in celebration of their lives. >> i didn't know anyone personally, but i feel

all the shootings that have occurred worldwide, such as the one at virginia tech university in blacksburg, virginia, which killed 32 innocent students, some people still hold fast to their beliefs. here's the opinion of a virginia tech student himself. >> yes, i do believe it is an individual right. the second amendment states that people have the right to bear arms, which basically means that any human being or any citizen of the united states is allowed to have a firearm. >> no, they have not. i was actually there for the second shooting that recently took place, and no, they haven't altered my opinion at all. in fact, it might have made my opinion stronger on the fact that i think people should have firearms. i think it's a good idea to own a firearm, and also i think that many colleges should look into allowing concealed weapons on campus. >> basically i think that if i f people are allowed to have concealed weapons on campuses, those people who are following the law most likely are just doing it for protection. so i think that that will enter into the minds of people who are going to

several of us spent this past weekend in blacksburg, it at virginia tech, moralizing their lives and their enormous contributions, and it hardens us that survivors are able to move forward in their lives. it hardens us to know that we are represented on the campus by scholarships, memorial funds, and any number of great remembrances, but the fact remains, and all of our families, there are holes shaped like our loved one that will never be filled, and that is true of every person here and every single family of the 32 people, who every day as you have heard, are shot to death in this country. this should not happen. as you have also heard repeatedly today, the question is, if not us, who? if not now, when? the courts have repeatedly deferred to the congress and state legislatures to do the right thing and proper regulations of public safety to include issues related to gun violence. but in far too many cases our state legislatures, state executive, and the congress have avoided making those hard choices. here in virginia, -- i should say, right across river in virginia -- our own gov
