fred blackwell, jenn, ken, john ram. the planning department has been doing all of the planning with the different agencies, the different challenges that are here. there are a lot of challenges that have been presented by this complex, futuristic, a beautifully designed building. there is just going to be such a transformation of the whole downtown and community because of this project. but it is also because of a transit center to replace what was here was the center, and their times, a transportation hub for the bay area when the old terminal was here. and so, in the vision of our city, and when maria took this up, she knew, because she had worked for a number of different mayors throughout the process, envisioning what this would mean to the future of our city, that we do need a brand new transit center that is not only modern, not only has all the amenities that you heard, whether it is housing, office, so forth. that it represents the future of our city. because at the center of it, the box for the high-speed rail.

>> currently, fred blackwell, executive director of the redevelopment agency, myself, nadia, brian from the capital planning program, and jennifer from the office of workforce development. supervisor chu: thank you. are there any members of the public who wish to speak on number 12? >> hello peter i am executive operating director at sfjazz. i want to respond to the comments regarding the outreach to the western addition, fillmore, and the jazz heritage area. we have been listening to and have been taking action on the request to reach out further and more closely to those areas. we held a community organization roundtable in may of this year. we invited members of community organizations in to talk about what they might want and what they might seek from the sfjazz and to see how we could benefit in partnerships. representation that that committee -- commended the session that we had, there were members of the jazz heritage center there in the jazz heritage district. and they all thank us for having that open forum, because they felt it was a good step to building the bridges across al

for this progress, the agency and its staff, particularly , blackwell, amy neches, and kelly cahn deserve a huge amount of credit. [applause] finally, a couple of days ago, the agency commission voted to approve the first phase of the design approval process for the two million square foot headquarters campus for salesforce.com. this will be the largest project built for the city sent embarcadero center, also a redevelopment project. we will hear more about this from one of our speakers, and it is an interesting question why salesforce elected to make this enormous investment in land, some $279 million, and construction for an open campus in the city when most of the technology and biotech giants have chosen to build closed campuses in suburban communities. the founder and ceo put it succinctly. he said, the talent is in the city. something to keep in mind. twitter, by the way, seems to have agreed, having decided to take on the challenge of rehabilitating the merchandised market. with the gray hulk of the merchandise mart on its way to a new life, that should kickstart longstanding effor

and asked the executive director of the agency, fred blackwell, to serve as the president of that boardd asked myself, then serving as director of real estate, but i have continued in that role as city administrator, along with michael cohen as the director, and now that position has been taken over. the agency formed this nonprofit. the agency agreed to provide staff for the entity. we applied for and received recognition as a community development entity, and we had to have that status before we could apply for the new markets tax credit. then in in february 2010, we put in our first application for an allocation of new markets tax credits, and we're very happy because oftentimes you do not get any allocation for your first application. we were very happy to have been awarded $35 million in tax credits. there are rules that apply to those where you have to spend them with then, i believe, 18 months. so for us, we have to get those allocations deployed into the community by september 30, 2013 or we will lose the ability to use those. our first allocation was to the college track projec

people like emma willard, the great champion of higher education for women or elizabeth blackwell, the first woman doctor in america. they were wonderful writers and they weren't writing writing. they weren't writing to be published. they were writing letters. it was a time when people believed in writing letters and writing letters was part of life. part of what you were expected to do. . . is not sufficient. i wanted to know more. i wanted to learn more. i'm going to go to paris. so he borrowed $3,000 from friends. closed up his law office. he went to the sarba, in nes attending lectures in everything, theology, classics, everything. c-span: in french or english. >> guest: in french. he doesn't speak french so he had to learn french. a crammed course he organized himself with tutors and about a month later he was able to do it. undaunted to these people is inspiring. and he attended the lectures. and he kept a journal. and the journal is fabulous. it was published in four volumes. in the journal he writes about who's he's meeting and learning. and there's one journal where the speake

one of my favorite characters of all that i was able to write about is elizabeth blackwell who was thefirst female doctor, american female doctor in our country. another was the wonderful creator of the m l bluebird school in truly new york who was the first woman to champion higher education for women in america and spend her whole life and education. but if people like john singer sargent who's in a ability as a prodigy. painting the greatest pictures by an american when he was still in his 20s and paris working primarily under a french painter who really was his master and send him down to spain to study because he said everything you need to know is founded in alaska. it goes on and on. and augusta who liked george healy was a boy growing up on the streets of the city in new york went to work when he was always 13-years-old by his father, very little vacation but they've great deal of talent and this drives, this desire to excel, and he became the great american sculptor of the 19th century. in my view the greatest american sculptor ever. and we have his monuments to our history an
