speaking of florida, let's go back to victor blackwell. he is live on one of these barrier islands off ft. pierce. sort of the third of the way up, you know, the south florida coastline. so are you -- how are the outer bands? are you able to open your eyes a little bit more now? >> reporter: yes. we've got a break now. i mean, as quickly as one of those outer bands will come and really start pelting the sand and the rain, it goes away. that's the nature of this phase of the hurricane as jennifer said, dorian's eye still 112 miles away from here, over the bahamas. but the effect it does have, anyone on the beach is gone. i mean, they immediately run to some type of shelter. and of course authorities here want to keep these beaches clear, mandatory evacuation here. and they've shut down the bridges to come across the intercoastal on to hutchinson island, jensen causeway, the stewart causeway. they're trying to keep people from coming this direction. communities up and down the coast here are preparing -- i want to go to one of the mayors of

i'm victor blackwell in jensen beach.he martin county sheriff's office and emergency management officials just wrapped up what they said would be their last scheduled news conference on this storm. it comes down to three words from officials. we've been spared here in martin county. they say that the mandatory evacuation along hutchinson island will be lifted. the causeways, the jensen beach causeway and stewart street causeway will be reopened. we're getting a bit of rain coming in from one of these exterior bands of this now category 2 hurricane. but the officials say that for those people who prepared for this storm, boarded up and stocked up or evacuated, they should not look at this with frustration but instead see this as prayers answered and you only have to look east to the bahamas to know the true strength of what this storm could have brought to thishi is what we're expecting to see as this storm starts to slowly climb the of f. these stronger bands that come in and bring stronger winds and rain. let's go now to

i'm victor blackwell along the intracoastal here in jensen beach.tinuing to get those gusts of winds, hurricane warning still in effect for much of the eastern coast of florida. as this storm slowly starts to creep north. here in martin county, evacuation orders have been lifted. the bridges on to hutchinson island, the barrier island, those will be opened eventually. water service to the island has been restored. but i think it's perspective that we need in this conversation about what florida is facing and what has happened to the islands of the bahamas this afternoon. we've spoken with several people who rode out the storm in shelters, in their homes. i want you to listen to one that experience was like, and what they've seen. >> this is probably the most and worst day of my life to address the bahamian people. as a physician, i've been trained to withstand many things but never anything like this. >> this one is mammoth. >> we talk about these storms, these hurricanes, they normally come and go over an area. they don't actually sit. it's actuall

i'm in new york, victor blackwell, my colleague, is standing by live in florida where millions are getting ready for the impact from hurricane dorian. we'll talk to victor here in a moment. >>> first, this new forecast of the category-four storm, it's devastated the bahamas, is creeping toward the florida coast at just one mile per hour. slower than a walking pace. cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is here with the latest track. and so you know, all right, so you guys are all zeroing in on what's called the cone of uncertainty. does it look like dorian's going to pivot northwest? and if it does, what does that mean for floridians and the rest of the southeast? >> the cone hasn't moved farther west which is good news. florida's still going to feel the impacts of the storm. it's still too early to tell exactly how much more northwest this storm is going to go. i think the one mile per hour is actually a generous speed. it doesn't look like this thing is moving at all. this made landfall in the abacos mid yesterday. it's barely moved. sitting over grand bahama island, 15 mile-per-hour winds and

victor blackwell is in nassau.u've been talking to people who are trying to find out if their friends or family members survived the storm. what have they been telling you? >> brianna, this is the center of the rescue effort here in the bahamas at the international airport in nassau. you'll hear the chopper blades behind me because every few minutes there is either take-off or landing of a chopper from the u.s. coast guard or an aid organization, medical and supplies, bahamian officials going over to the island of abaco, with we saw those first images of the property destruction. as you mentioned, the priority is life. and rescuing those who are still on that island. a few moments ago, my colleague from cnn espanol record this had vid video where a 10-year-old boy was plucked by the u.s. coast guard and brought back here to this airport. he was crying. they were hugging him. understandably, very emotional that this boy was found and brought back to his family. another man, stephen roll lived through this storm and

victor blackwell is there and filed this report. >> reporter: this is marsh harbour, this is the most populated settlement on abaco. i'm at the marina or what is left of it. so this is here where the marina is where there were boats, but the strength of the storm carried several of those really large boats here on land now. you see the saints jamsaint ya here. and we see sunlight coming through one of the rooms with the door or window that used to be there, it is really hard to tell, and lumber, parts of the marina shoved up to the fence line here. and these cars, no telling where these cars were before the storm, but they are now scrambled over here. if you take a look in the distance, i don't know if my photographer amanda can get it, but those houses are just piled on to each other. those houses have been destroyed. we've seen as we flew in that there are shingles ripped from roofs, woodenboards -- you can see straight into what used to be habitable rooms. the rebuilding effort will take years. the question is how many who left for safety and comfort on another island will be comin

i'm victor blackwell in jensen beach.to show you the intracoastal in just the last couple of minutes during that break. the wind has picked up. the intracoastal, this is the most movement here on the water that i've seen for most of the day. you can see just how active and maybe the boats, you can see some of those, i don't know which angle my photographer amanda has. but this is really on the move. now, just a couple of hours ago, martin county officials ended the mandatory evacuation. said the bridges would e back open. but people need to be especially safe because that does not mean that the threat is over. because this wind on the bridges, on the causeways on to hutchinson island can still be very dangou closed on the other of the island there. but i just want to give you a picture, if you've been watching throughout the day, you know that this is the most action we've seen or on the intracoastal. let's heads up the coast near daytona beach. my colleague rosa flores is there. as officials there are preparing for this

. >> our victor blackwell has been reporting from there for the past few days.assau and joins us live now. victor, what's the latest? >> reporter: alex, search and rescue and evacuation, those are the priorities. let me show you the new video. this is just a few minutes ago. usaid, the disaster relief team, 57 people, four dogs, and choppers full of supplies, they loaded up and they will be flying over taking that 45 minute chopper flight to abaco to start the work of search and rescue. we know from the u.s. here in the bahamas, stephanie bower that the teams will be walking through the keys for their search and rescue effort in just an hour and a half or so, we're going to hear from the administrator in miami announce the breadth of the support from the u.s. those who have survived this storm who are on the island of abaco and they want to come to nassau where there is some safety and comfort, that is the urgency as well for the u.s. coast guard. i went over yesterday to take a look at everything that is there. we landed at marsh harbour airport, and there was

i'm victor blackwell.e've just received an update from martin county officials there's now been some outages of traffic lights as well making it more difficult along these roads as the winds start to come in and also know there's thousands of outages reported from martin county which would make those people sheltering in place as requested by those counties. rosa? >> reporter: victor, the headline from here is that look around me, dorian is still not here and there is a bit of fatigue. let me show you the mixture because this barrier island is under a mandatory evacuation so you see there are buildings and businesses boarded up. as i just walk around you can see there are people in their cars, people driving up to take pictures of the ocean. there are people in hotels over here parked as well. and as we turn around you can see there's actual traffic in this barrier island. but here's is what officials are afraid of and here is what they are warning, that once these conditions begin they're expecting them b

victor blackwell is right down there and we can see it behind you.u're hearing on the ground. >> reporter: we are seeing the wind picking up certainly in the last few minutes. this area under a mandatory evacuation and many of the people have evacuated along the drive here and driving along the barrier island over the last day or two. we've seen many of the shutters, awnings folded down, windows boarded up and we're starting to also hear about power outages as well for those people who decided to shelter in place. you see the intercoastal coming up as well. we know that officials want people to take this seriously. the new update from the national hurricane center is at the top of the hour. they'll be looking at the wind speeds for the people that are still dealing with this another day in the bahamas, but also the direction it is moving and how fast it's moving for the last several hours. it's been stationery. the hope is that it turns north, stays off the coast and then kind of dies out as it moves up the east coast of the u.s. but mandatory evacua

cnn's victor blackwell is in nassau where supplies are trickling in. how are they getting to people in greatest need? >> reporter: this urgency is palpable. six days after dorian hit abaco, let me show you what we just saw from the u.s. coast guard a few moments ago, a chopper arrived with a person on a stretcher. we don't know if that's a person who has some sensitive medical needs or if that's someone who was injured by this category five storm. but still, people coming over from abaco, the latest count as of two hours ago from the coast guard was 290 people who have evacuated on their choppers from abaco to nassau here, but of course as you said, the urgency is to get those people off the island. i went there, and we saw hundreds of people at the treasure key airport, the marsh harbour airport who were crowded on tarmacs waiting to get onto flights here. we also saw the damage. it is -- the scale is unimaginable. i went to the marina. the boats are still there, but they're not in the water. here's what i saw. all right, we don't have that, but those

cnn's victor blackwell is in nassau for us. he's just back from a trip to the hard hit town of marsh harbour. how bad was it out there? what did you see? >> reporter: wolf, the scale is unimaginable. there are communities there, there are two communities called the mud and pigeon peas where a lot of the haitian community lives, blocked, colorful houses brightly painted, they look like piles of legos there the way they've been scrambled. we just heard from u.s. air force general terrance o'shaughnessy of northern command who says the air force is working with the bahamian government to reestablish air traffic control, to rebuild some damaged airports, to support the search and rescue effort. ment the usaid response team will be walking through the keys looking for people who potentially survived and those who have not survived. the bahamian health minister believes the eventual number of those killed by hurricane dorian will be his word, staggering. the current number is 30. on our flight over abaco today, we saw hundreds of peo

victor blackwell has been following the ongoing evacuations. he spoke with bahamians whose lives have been turned upside down. >> va >> reporter: evacuation flights continue. we spoke with one family that had been there for seven hours and the feels-like temperature in the middle of the day, 98 degrees. we've heard from the leader of government, the prime minister, the number of dead will be catastrophic. currently just a few dozen officially. we spoke with a woman who rode the storm out alone. her name is germane smith and she hid in her bathroom. here's her story. >> as soon as i duck and i move, a big tree came by the window i just moved from and just missed it. and my roof start lifting. i run inside the bathroom for cover in the tub because they say it always a safe haven and that's what saved me. i was scared literally. i can't think i was going to make it. and, you know, i was scared. >> and jermaine smith is still sleeping in that bath tub every night. she's not wearing tleaving the . she's not leaving. she is part of the group feeding

cnn's victor blackwell flew over much of the destruction today. he has an update on rescue efforts. in nassau was not hit with the brunt of the storms. this fear of the unknown, how palpable is it on the ground? >> reporter: it's day five after the hurricane hit abaco, and people who have loved ones there, they just are unsatisfied with what they're getting from the government. this official number of 30, i've spoken to people who survived the storm and came over, i have heard the stories of more than 30 people who they say they watched go out into the storm or were hurt in the storm and lost their lives. listen, we're hearing these dramatic adjectives from officials, unimaginable, staggering when it comes to the death toll, but they're not committing to an estimate. we went there today to abaco, what i think people don't get, really, respect for or an appreciation for is the height of the rubble in some of these communities and what could be under there, the number of dead. just like we knew there were more than 64, the official number for so long in puerto rico after maria, the pe
