[laughter] it is not sick once vince -- it is not a coincidence that they have an interest. we will start off with our friend from new jersey sitting in for dr. coburn as a ranking member could outlast it senator -- i will ask if senator heitkamp would like to speak for a while and also if senator ayotte would like to say anything. thisank you for convening hearing, thank you for your leadership of this committee, thank you for your leadership on the issue of human trafficking. earlier,airman said human trafficking should be called exactly what it is, modern-day slavery. it is a plague on our nation and the world. it is, to put it bluntly, a crime against humanity. it is a crime against the dignity of every person victimized by the ruthless criminals who trade in human beings. it is a crime against society. as dr. king said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. it is happening

and fortunately today and tomorrow we are going to be ble to provide them that help. we're frequently hearing about 40 or 41 votes to repeal the affordable care act. i'll tell you what, as many as it takes. but seven of those efforts to restrict and repeal portions of the affordable care act, seven of those have been passed by the senate and signed by the president. so it's not entirely a fruitless effort, but probably more telling is the president himself, who has whenever it suited him, simply jettisons a portion of the law, a law he signed in march of 2010. we all remember, those of us who were in the house at that time, those of us who watched news shows during the summer of 2009 and on into 2010, the cry that went out, we got to do something about with people with pre-existing conditions. there are far too many people in the country who are frozen out of the insurance market because of an unfortunate medical diagnosis. but the reality is the large group plans in this country have open enrollment periods so the pre-existing condition could he none drum generally -
