i want to go to wolf blitzer in jerusalem. you've been speaking with high-level israeli officials all morning. what did they say happened and what do they say is going to happen now? >> what they say happened is that hamas, they say, clearly violated the cease-fire, about 90 minutes into the cease-fire was supposed to go into effect around 8:00 a.m. local time. around 9:30, hamas gauge israeli troops. the israeli troops according to idf, they were doing what was allowed, permissible to do during the course of the 72-hour cease-fire. they were dealing with what they call the demissioning of these tunnels, that go from gaza into israel and they point to a staple that secretary of state john kerry made last night in new delhi when he specifically said, israel will be able to continue its defensive operations for tunnels behind its lines. and the israelis say that they were behind their lines, they were continuing their operations. they say defensive operations. according to the agreement for the cease-fire, when all of a sudden h

i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington. let's get back to the crisis in the middle east. we're about 12 1/2 hours into the three-day cease-fire in gaza. let's get the palestinian perspective on ways going on. joining us from gaza is mustafa barghouti. thank you very much for joining us. a quick question before we get to some substance. how difficult was it for you to get from ramallah on the west bank, where i normally speak to you, over to gaza? was it difficult to get into gaza? >> it was extremely difficult, wolf, because the israelis would not allow me to cross through areas, so a trip that would usually take two hours from ramallah to gaza -- i had to travel for a day and a half, because i had to go to jordan, and then fly from jordan to egypt and then cross sinai and then spend the night in arish and then next morning go to rafah and cross through rafah. it wasn't easy at all. i mean, there were lots of restrictions. the israeli army was bombarding the area when i crossed. so we had to take big risk to get to gaza. but finally, i managed, after long wait and i am so

. >> and i'm wolf blitzer in washington. michaela, stand by for a moment. i want to get straight to the escalation in iraq. a dramatic military escalation. u.s. war planes have dropped two 500 pound laser guided bombs on northern iraq. they did it a few miles ago. the president says he authorized the trieks to strikes to protect u.s. military and diplomatic personnel in northern iraq. it targets the military group of isis, near the town of irbil. the militants have given thousands of families of religious and ethnic minority a joist -- choice, you can convert to their brand of islam or you can guy. -- die. members are trapped in the mountains where they have fled. children have died from dehydration from intense summer hit -- heat. >> when we face the issues we have on that mountain, when we have a mandate to help, in this case, a request from the iraqi government, and and we have the unique capabilities to help avert a massacre, i believe the united states of america cannot turn a blind eye. >> the group isis has taken over several cities in northern iraq

. >>> hello, i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington. israel and hamas accuse each other of violating what was supposed to be a temporary cease-fire. the humanitarian truce has ended. what will it take to end the conflict? here are some of the latest developments. the seven-hour cease-fire gave palestinians a chance to stock up on supplies. they crowded into gaza's largest open air market shortly after the truce took effect. those are images in jerusalem. police there disrupted what they're calling a terrorist attack. they shot and killed a man driving an earth mover after he turned over a passenger bus. this video, posted on social media, said to show the moment police responded. israel confirms its forces carried out an air strike on a house in a gaza refugee camp today. gaza officials say an 8-year-old girl was killed. an israeli spokesman denied troops ignored a cease-fire because it was an ongoing operation. still, criticism growing loudly after an attack on another united nations shelter. nine people were killed there. >> when you

. >>> now for the latest on the crisis in the middle east, let us go to cnn's wolf blitzer. >> thanks very much, fareed. it's just past 5:00 p.m. here in jerusalem on the 27th day of operation protective edge. they said ten people were killed when israeli shells lapped near a u.n. run school in southern gaza that was sheltering almost 3,000 people. no official comment from israel on this attack. those ten become part of the sobering statistics of this war. in gaza more than 1750 people over 1800 according to palestinian health officials. more than 80 rockets since midnight and officials there say and officials in israel at least say 64 soldiers, three sill civilians have been killed since the fikting began. israel says at last count it has struck 4626 targets in gaza by attacks from air, ground and sea and last count gaza has launched 3180 rockets, mortars or missiles into israel. on friday, a temporary cease-fire by the united states and united nations brought a glimmer of hope but any sense of optimism was destroyed when three israeli soldiers were killed in gaza shortly after that

i'm wolf blitzer reporting today from new york. the list of americans tig s fig and dying along islamist militants in the middle east is growing. one of those fighters, douglas mccain, the 33-year-old from minnesota who was killed last weekend fighting for isis inside syria. we're learning more now about him and getting new word about some new propaganda videos being used to recruit young people in the united states. ted rowlands is joining us from minneapolis. so what can you tell us about minnesota and its connection to islamist terrorists recruiting, ted? >> reporter: well, wolf, this is really, believe it or not, ground zero for islamic extremist recruiting. and it started back with al shabaab. they came to minnesota and recruited young somalis. there's a very large somali population here in the twin cities. and for years, they've been recruiting fighters to come over and fight in somalia. now we're seeing isis taking a page out of the exact same playbook, and they have been successful in recruiting upwards of a dozen young men
