we are going down to bloomingdale now. we did a lot of work beforehand with the people in bloomingdale to try to mitigate that situation. it looks like it hasn't been as bad as it would have been. we got all the leaves out. soy think we've done reasonably well there. we will go down and do an inspection of that. but again there are other areas where they could be concerns. like the potomac we will take a look at that. i think we have gotten through the high today area down there and hopefully we will see it recede to some extent. we are going to work as hard as we can to minimize the consequences of that. >> reporter: do you have any expectations that will sort of get back to normal for city services starting tomorrow? >> that is our goal. we are going to hold a press conference later today. to talk about that. we are looking at what the conditions of schools. i'm absolutely certain the district government will be open tomorrow. i'm assuming the federal government will reopen tomorrow. we will do everything we can to funct

. >> there are some areas particularly where they are flood prone and one of them is bloomingdale and have there been any precautions where we know there is flooding on a day when we don't have a hurricane. >> well, i was in bloomingdale myself and we have deployed crews to try to remove all the leaves that potentially would block catch basins and flooding problems and we had the water in the neighborhood to distribute sandbags to all the residents who want them. we have homeland security, actually based in blooming dale and we have two or three and we are doing everything we can to mid-gate a situation in terms of the flooding. >> are you hearing from georgetown or any other areas of concern in low-lying areas? >> no, we have not heard any reports that would suggest this flooding and some of the areas where we historically had problems, but we now have an update to power outages. >> hopefully we can keep people restored. >> we wish them all well. >> thank you for your time, the mayor was talking about an issue with three trees that have fallen on to homes. there was an update with a

news 4's megan mcgrath is live in the bloomingdale section of the city with more on that. what are they doing this time around? >> reporter: you're right. they've had a horrible time in the bloomingdale neighborhood with flooding, and we're talking normal storms, not anything like what we're expecting with sandy. they are taking precautions. they are very nervous about what's going to come with the storm. this is the window cafe. they have the sand bags up, took the patio furniture, put it in this alcove. more sand bags around the corner at the front door. the hope being, if the water does indeed rise, as they've seen so many other times before, that the sandbags and some of the precautions they've taken will prevent the water from going inside the business. public works has been out of this neighborhood all weekend long. they've been making sure the storm drains are clear, getting up the leaves to make sure we don't have any block ge agebloc. we have light rain. just a trickle right now. we are expecting very heavy rain to enter our area in the next couple of hours or so.

one good thing, brian, the bloomingdale neighbor was spared last night and early this morning as you well know. they've had some issues with flooding, but we went with the mayor today, surveyed that area, no flooding at all. the mayor had actually at the time of the tour when we were in bloomingdale got on a conference call with president obama and other governors in the area. in fact, the mayor says he's talked to the white house twice in the last 48 hours or so and the federal government is committed to helping out as much as possible. back to you. >> matt ackland tonight. >>> the power is out for thousands of people in our area, even still dominion virginia reporting a little more than 54,500 at this hour, pepco only about 6,000 people out of power, bge reporting just over 2,600 here in the d.c. burbs. >>> sandy also caused damage in fairfax county. trees came crash down and brought down power lines with them. this is the scene in annandale. a giant tree toppled and nearly missed clara reynolds' house. >> very frightening. >> reporter: how loud? >> real loud. you probably could ha

megan mcgrath live in the bloomingdale neighborhood with more on that. >> reporter: the bloomingdale neighborhood has had a terrible time in recent months. they have flooded with normal garden variety storms. you can imagine the level of anxiety with sandy heading our way. this is the windows cafe. you can see they brought out the patio furniture. they have sandbags in front of that doorway. here is rhode island avenue. we're actually seeing traffic lighter than usual. perhaps not too surprising. the d.c. government is closed. federal government is closed. also, the school system closed hered too. should also mention that metro is closed. that's going to have a big impact on a lot of people here today. we were out and about early this morning. we saw one of the last metro buses completing its rounds, heading back to the depot this morning. that's where the bus and others will stay until this storm is over. no metro bus service or rail service either. we caught up with a man going to reagan national this morning, needed to take metro to get there in order to catch his flight to do tha

in the bloomingdale neighborhood, they still have real reasons to worry. as tom sherwood reports now, that area has a long history of problems with flooding. >> reporter: in bloomingdale near florida avenue in north capitol street, halloween is fun. pretend scary. but too many recent floods here are desperately serious. neighbors fear more flooding from the oncoming storm sandy. d.c. water crews were rushing to clear some drains to minimize flooding until long-term solutions are made. but neighbors can't wait. they grab their brooms and rakes to do what they could to keep storm drains clear. 72-year-old arnez wilson, here 50 years, said she asked a passing worker to help her. >> i said could you help me with these leaves? he said do the best you can. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: ward 5 council member duffy was out touring the area, talking with neighbors. he pitched in for a moment or two. but he said the whole neighborhood needs more urgent attention. >> she just wants the media to help. >> and you deserve the media to help. you've been here cont

the folks in bloomingdale, they know flooding all too well. they've had a real problem in recent months, and that's just with regular storms, not the kind of thing we're expecting here with sandy. they're trying to take precautions. this is windows cafe here on rhode island avenue. they have had issues with flooding in the past. they have pulled out the sand bags. the hope is that, if they see flooding once again, they can at least prevent it. take a look. it's raining harder. we still have not seen torrential downpours. so far, so good. the storm drains seem to be handling the rain that is falling at this point. they put a big effort out there this weekend to clear all the debris away from storm drains, get the leaves out of the way to make sure they don't have any clogs. they want these drains to be working at full capacity as soon as the real heavy rains begin. folks here crossing their fingers, hoping for the best, and keeping a very close eye on sandy and her movements. reporting live in northwest, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. >> m

s bloomingdale neighborhood when it rains, we have an update on how the area fared with sandy. that's next. >>> we want to take a moment away from the sandy coverage for breaking news ride now. three fire bombs went off today in northern virginia. the first one went off in stafford county and that is where we find our ken molestina 689 he is live from the scene with the very latest. three fire bombs? kenny what's going on? >> reporter: yes, three. let me just correct you for a second. we're in fredericksburg, this is the first of three that went off today. this happened at about 4:00 a.m. the second happened in nearby stafford county shortly after this took place. we are along the 3100 block of normandy avenue in fredericksburg. what it looks like over here through the details of what we believe took place here. this is the home that was fire bombed the living room area had an incendiary device or a pipe bomb as police are saying thrown through it. no one was hurt but again this happened at about 4:00 a.m. shortly after two more in nearby stafford county, police and investigato
