nick janes cold, wet, stuck at blue canyon but it's for a good cause. we love to see the snow, nick. >> reporter: that about describes it. cold, windy, it's a lot of fun up here. we're doing our best, trying to endure the snow with a smile. it is fall and has been ever since we park here about 4 a.m. so it's been steady. this is kind. cutoff though between rain and snow so as far as accumulation here at 5300 feet, not seeing a ton. it is sticking but very slushy. you have to go farther:the hill to nyack to see it start to stick and that's where chain controls are in effect at this point. you will see caltrans set up as well as the big rigs pulled over on interstate 80 getting set to head over the pass. now, caltrans by the way has called in extra crews. they have just about doubled their sierra personnel for the rest of the week to deal with this storm so have enough drivers out for the snow plows and the like. also just yesterday they were performing maintenance on their graders and snow plows just to make sure the equipment is in shape because this is

reporter brian hickey is in blue canyon this morning with more on the rescue effort to save that skier thing that an awesome day of skiing was marked by this devastation. avalanches were rated as high when this happened. that is where three men were out skiing yesterday when they were swept away in this slide. one of those victims was pinned up against a tree. he was carried 300 feet down a mountain and wrapped around a tree where he suffered significant trauma and partial burial at that point. it took rescuers hours to get to him. he was semi conscious when he got to him. and one rescuer telling us the scene was very unstable. they had to use route selection just to get there so they weren't caught in slides themselves. >> it was a pretty big slide and the victim was there were three guys and one was caught in the slide right from the get go. and taken down the mountain. quite a ways. probably 300 feet down. >> reporter: and as they were taking the victim from the snow cap that was driven into the scene to bring him out and transporting him in the ambulance they were performing cpr on

it's braining in blue canyon. about 5,000, 5,500 feet you might encounter rain. for us, moisture continues to stream off the pack. i focused on one area here from clayton over to danville, alamo, san ramon, to hayward, so the 680/508 split. there's also some from napa to marin county and also towards the santa clara valley and santa cruz mountains. not bad rain, not bad. the system came in and left 3- plus. ben lomond. i've not heard from boulder creek but i imagine they were pretty close. there were one or two in the north bay. there was 4 to 6 near ataz adero. some heavy totals up in lake county, middletown, almost 4 inches of rain. ukiah, kentfield had 2 inches of rain. our observer .97 and crockett close at .93. you can see the moisture source continues to take aim at us. so a cloudy, mostly cloudy day. 51 santa rosa. but a lot of 54s in here. see the temperatures are really stuck to the cloud cover. the next system has a lot of moisture with it. it's moving toward northern california. it will start to slide south. time line for wednesday, the north coast is
