nick janes cold, wet, stuck at blue canyon but it's for a good cause. we love to see the snow, nick. >> reporter: that about describes it. cold, windy, it's a lot of fun up here. we're doing our best, trying to endure the snow with a smile. it is fall and has been ever since we park here about 4 a.m. so it's been steady. this is kind. cutoff though between rain and snow so as far as accumulation here at 5300 feet, not seeing a ton. it is sticking but very slushy. you have to go farther:the hill to nyack to see it start to stick and that's where chain controls are in effect at this point. you will see caltrans set up as well as the big rigs pulled over on interstate 80 getting set to head over the pass. now, caltrans by the way has called in extra crews. they have just about doubled their sierra personnel for the rest of the week to deal with this storm so have enough drivers out for the snow plows and the like. also just yesterday they were performing maintenance on their graders and snow plows just to make sure the equipment is in shape because this is

usually we park at blue canyon about 5300 feet up but it caltrans told us you know it's not been plowed out yet and it's going to be a while and that true to their word, we went by that spot, i-80 in blue canyon and there was an huge snow drift there. so we are farther down the hill a little lower elevation but still snow is falling here, chain controls in effect at al that and the gold run area so it's a real adventure trying to get up the hill this morning. i believe we have a look at highway 267 at northstar closer to tahoe where it's really coming down. you're talking about snowfall totals for the sierra ski resorts in the feet range. alpine meadows had 36 inches. squaw valley 33 inches. homewood 25 inches. so a lot of snow has fallen of course in the storm from yesterday into today. and it's going to keep coming down perhaps for the next couple of hours. no issues as far as crashes so far. show going and caltrans is -- slow going and caltrans is struggling to keep up with the plowing. it's difficult as the snow keeps coming down. so with that, we'll send it back to you obviously a

brian hickey joins us in blue canyon for good news for skiers. >> reporter: the snow started fallingabout 4:00 this morning and it hasn't stopped. it's expected to go through today and the weekend with snow piling up. 8 inches expected here at 59,000-foot level today. higher the mountain, they're expecting feet of snow out of this first of several waves of storms that are heading toward the sierra and expected to pile up a lot of snow. in the meantime, interstate 80 behind me, very snowy. chain controls have been bouncing up and down the mountains. drivers across the way, chaining up at nyack to head up the hill. it's not so much the snow but the wind with this first wave that's bouncing the drivers around on the interstate. anyone heading up the sierra today should expect windy and snowy conditions. again, with several feet of snow forecasted to fall over the highest elevations here along interstate 80. i'm brian hickey, nbc bay area news. >>> dozens of people are forced from their homes after flames ripped through a carport this morning in oakland. cell phone video shows massive fl

. >>> let's take a live look at blue canyon up in placer county where the sierra getting hit by a powerful winter storm. after an unusually dry winter, locals have mixed emotions about the sudden surge of snowfall. is [ pause ] >> i worked right here at the truck stop. >> reporter: it's a sierra like we haven't seen it before this winter. >> we sell changes and make commission and do well here. >>> reporter: the biggest storm of 2012 is slamming into the high country in full force. a combination of high winds, heavy snowfall and a weak snowpack have prompted authorities to issue an avalanche warning. all day it's been slow going for motorists. chain controls are in effect for both interstate 80 and highway 50 with the storm speed limit of 30 miles an hour due to snowy roads and avissibility at only a quarter mile in some places. the latest snow survey released yesterday revealed the sierra snowpack is only at 30% of normal. this storm should help build that total. some locals say that while they understand the need, they didn't want all the snowfall at once. >> we like it up here except i

to the mountains, there is snow up there, snow showers, blue canyon. 50 and 80 slow going and the winterarning has been dropped. things are winding down. mountains, we have snow. lake level, 3 feet of snow. higher elevations, above, 7,000 feet, 8,000 feet, 5 feet of snow. not great rainfall for us. we got a long way to go. we need a storm like that. a bun of those every week -- a bunch of those every week. rainfall accumulations. 2/10 in san francisco. nothing. last year we were looking at 2 inches of rain with each storm. these are light numbers. they did raise havoc on the morning commute. it was wet and slow. if you see the system moving out. there goes the system. this ridge of high pressure, super broad. when they get fat like that, they are hard to break down. what does it tell you? next few days it will warm up. we will be dry for a while. big ridge of high pressure. you don't see them that big often. a warm weather forecast into the bay area weekend. we will tell you about that. tomorrow morning, as you head out, valley fog, familiar, patchy frost perhaps and temperatures cooler.

right now, 34 in blue canyon. in truckee, 37 with sunshine. tahoe valley airport 39.therly wind gusting to 38 miles an hour. there has been a little bit of snow, back home. high clouds and also some sunshine trying to bust through those clouds and doing a good job of it. low cloud cover and mist and drizzle has been here. live doppler shows we're picking up some returns especially out to highway 1, sea ranch, healdsburg, santa rosa and cloverdale and clearlake but to get further south in petaluma and we are looking at the drizzle the light rain and it does extend to highway 101. it is falling apart this weak front. as it does, moisture in place so still calling for a few showers out here. this is prelude, it primes the atmosphere for a series of storm systems that will head our way right through the weekend. tomorrow doesn't look like we'll see any big amount of rain, just a cans on your monday. >> 45 in mountain view. 52 in napa. we do have a fog along the coast. rain and drizzle this morning, chance of rain throughout the day today. rainy, spring arrives march 19th

overall totals up across the see air remark we could see eight inches in blue canyon and possibly sevenghout pollack pines with slick and icy travel. you'll need the chains through tomorrow night. dropping to 44 in oakland. thursday we'll see numbers starting to go up a bit, even close to 60 in evergreen, 58 in millipede as. out of the 40s in the east bay, numbers could top out at 55 in the castro valley, and 54 from freemont to alameda. how about santa rosa, it's usually one our warm spots. you'll get close to 50. and very choppily and dangerous out in our seas, right off the san francisco peninsula. warm withing starts to build in here as we head throughout saturday. close to 70 degrees, dry weather, that looks to stay in place as we head into sunday with low 70s. and we'll keep that trend of above average temperatures all the way into monday. no storms next week. for those you who have been wanting the rain, tomorrow is your day, then we go back to this wild pattern. i know we talked about the deadly weather from the tornado outbreak in the midwest. that's also linked closely to the

reporter brian hickey is in blue canyon this morning with more on the rescue effort to save that skier thing that an awesome day of skiing was marked by this devastation. avalanches were rated as high when this happened. that is where three men were out skiing yesterday when they were swept away in this slide. one of those victims was pinned up against a tree. he was carried 300 feet down a mountain and wrapped around a tree where he suffered significant trauma and partial burial at that point. it took rescuers hours to get to him. he was semi conscious when he got to him. and one rescuer telling us the scene was very unstable. they had to use route selection just to get there so they weren't caught in slides themselves. >> it was a pretty big slide and the victim was there were three guys and one was caught in the slide right from the get go. and taken down the mountain. quite a ways. probably 300 feet down. >> reporter: and as they were taking the victim from the snow cap that was driven into the scene to bring him out and transporting him in the ambulance they were performing cpr on

brian hickey is live in blue canyon to show us how things are looking up there -- don't look up, brian, it will hit your eyes. >> reporter: it was right as you said wind. you've got some power there this morning. just don't say that word again this morning. right off the soda springs exit, interstate 80, the cars looking more like marshmallows this morning. broughtny yardstick here and it is indicating somewhere between six and seven inches of snow that fell since last night but add that to the foot and a half or more that fell yesterday and you get some very snowy conditions here in the sierra. how about that shot? it is just coming down up here in the sierra this morning. that gives you an indication of what we're dealing with here this morning. luckily the wind hasn't been too bad so it is not making whiteout conditions but obviously a lot of snow can come down. it is a warmer storm though. this morning chain controls were at king vail, they've since lowered it down to 5,000 feet. if you've ever hiydroplaned on water, watch out. watch out for slush if you're heading to the mountains

it's braining in blue canyon. about 5,000, 5,500 feet you might encounter rain. for us, moisture continues to stream off the pack. i focused on one area here from clayton over to danville, alamo, san ramon, to hayward, so the 680/508 split. there's also some from napa to marin county and also towards the santa clara valley and santa cruz mountains. not bad rain, not bad. the system came in and left 3- plus. ben lomond. i've not heard from boulder creek but i imagine they were pretty close. there were one or two in the north bay. there was 4 to 6 near ataz adero. some heavy totals up in lake county, middletown, almost 4 inches of rain. ukiah, kentfield had 2 inches of rain. our observer .97 and crockett close at .93. you can see the moisture source continues to take aim at us. so a cloudy, mostly cloudy day. 51 santa rosa. but a lot of 54s in here. see the temperatures are really stuck to the cloud cover. the next system has a lot of moisture with it. it's moving toward northern california. it will start to slide south. time line for wednesday, the north coast is

there's been some rain up in blue canyon and mt. shasta. this is a very warm system. to the north. rain develops on saturday getting very wind yes ally w -- windy as well. a high surf advisory starts at 5:00. 50s on the temperatures. already fairfield at 57 degrees. our temperature map projection does show 70s showing up to the east and the south. a very warm day. but tomorrow everything changes. the low that is coming in, that's going to align itself coming in tonight and tomorrow, yet the cloud cover on our cloud and rain forecast goes north warned and disappears. so the sunshine, mild to warm for many today. tonight we'll start to see increasing clouds inching back. i think we have to wait for the rain there. there will be drizzle overnight into tomorrow morning. but then the front approaches. right there at 7:00. may wait until noon early afternoon before it starts to go through the south bay areas. temperatures will be much cooler and the rainfall will be about 1 to 2 inches to the north. partly sunny, clouds, rain lifting north. after that fog, mild to warm but

francisco, millbrae, burlingame, and if i slide you up the hill, we've got rain and snow down to about blue canyon, still raining, truckee reporting that rain-snow mix and advisories in place for the sierra that will begin in the next half hour. this will last until tomorrow morning. a winter storm warning snow levels dropping down to 5,000 feet, down to it,000 feet tomorrow morning. two feet of snow expected for the highest elevations, but not a good day to head up there. very, very gusty and it's going to be blowing snow in that area for today. here at home, anywhere from a quarter inch to inch of ray, maybe an inch and a half for rainier spots, coastal range, mountains. wind gusts to 40 at times. high surf and high surf advisory starting at 5:00 this afternoon. and will last until monday morning. so three advisories there, one for the sierra, we have a wind advisory for the delta, carquinez straits in the next half hour. a high surf advisory for the coast starting later today. your extended forecast, rainshowers, wind, maybe thunderstorms for the afternoon today, tomorrow a whole different day.
