bly: my name is bly straube, the senior curator for jamestown. that is a project of preservation virginia, the first it is confusing that there are so many jamestown's. summoning people visit jamestown -- so many people visit jamestown but it turns out they never went to the real place. there is a jamestown that is a living history museum, jamestown settlement. they have three wonderful ships. they reconstructed a fort and an indian village and they have a huge museum over there. that is a state run organization. they get state funding for that. the island itself, the original site of jamestown, is co-managed by the national park service and preservation virginia. it is an unusual, private, public partnership. the park service owns the majority of the island, 1500 acres. reservation virginia has around 23. but their acres incorporate the site of the original for, the church, the church tower, and the last government building on property. they have a lot of history condensed in that 23 acres. it is preservation virginia who are doing the archaeolo

with me now, bly straube, an archeologist. thank you so much for being with us. know that maybe everything we learned in our history books is not the case? so what do you think is the theory of what happened to the colonists? >> well, we're hot on the trail now. we are cautiously optimistic, and it's really a combination of map, evidences from maps and archeology. archeology is key to sort of giving us a hint of what may have happened, at least to some of the colonists. we don't believe we're looking at the site of all of them. we think they probably split up, but we definitely have -- you might think of bread crumbs left by ants on the ground. we're on that kind of trail for this early group. >> other fiings will be announc but what are some of the theories out there? how did these people without a trace just disappear? >> we're all connected these days with our phones and internet and so forth. they weren't back then. there was a lot of time, distance between voyages going back and forth. john white, who was the leader of the colony, tried to get back to them,
