the expansion will affect millions of cars made by ford, honda, crisler, mazda and bmw.ore than 14 million vehicles have been recalled since 2008 because of takata-made air bags. this brings us to business news today and a look at the impact this massive air bag recall will have on affected motor companies. cnbc's steve sedgwick joins us from london. what does this mean for all those five automakers just mentioned and how important is this for people out there with these cars, to be paying attention to this and get them in to get promptly fixed? >> reporter: on the latter point as you mentioned, places like puerto rico and florida, they've already had their recall notices. nationwide, this scale is absolutely enormous. the automakers, ford, chrysler, mazda, bmw and honda as well. what is interesting is the u.s. car industry should be in a sweet spot at the moment. the auto sales are absolutely fantastic. we're back to 2007 levels and the kind of levels we saw at the first part of this century. in 2015 we're looking at 16.7 to 16.9 million cars. that's a fantastic number,

those are vehicles before 2008, so 2008 older models from ford, honda, chrysler, mazda, bmw. concern is the air bag inflaters may rupture on the driver's side air bags and that's why they're calling for a nationwide recall of those our bags. two things stand out from a conference call. one, they do not know the xant exact number of vehicles involved. the head of nhtsa said it's likely to be millions, tens of millions. and two, last night they had a conference call with takata and the nhtsa administrator said they called on takata to issue a nationwide recall. takata refused. now nhtsa is anteing up in terms of the pressure and calling on automakers to do this recall on their own and the language was fairly forceful in this conference call about the way they feel takata has responded. >> in terms of the impact on the automakers what do you think considering many of them are being impacted? >> too hard to say what the financial impact is at this point because they don't know, and in terms of the public, i think there's more confusion out there. nobody is going to stop driving t
