we are a young board. eight of us have served for less than two years, but we have a tremendous amount of talent. we now have seven law degrees on the board. we have six masters degrees on the board. with our new incoming class, we have a civil rights attorney, a deputy city attorney, a venture capitalist, the founder of a small business. we span the diversity of our neighbors, the diversity of our demographics, the dersty of our political perspectives, and starting on tuesday, we are going to come together to play for the first time as a team. now, we need to figure out fast thousand do this because we have many challenges in front of us. within very short order we are going to have to tackle a budget deficit of almost $400 million without any of the budget tricks we've been able to use in years past. we are going to have to figure out how to collaborate to bring down our looming pension and health care benefits. we're going to have to figure out how to continue to provide basic city services while taking

you had the board of supervisors not only in its capacity as the board of supervisors, but also as the transportation authority trying to do everything we could to minimize the level of cuts. one of the things that we repeatedly heard from, certainly my district, was the lack of input from the public about how those cuts were made. i'm especially concerned about the way in which decisions are made that impact communities that may not necessarily be as well-off as others and who rely on public transportation as a means of putting food on the table. i'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about how you would approach that in your job in terms of making sure that there is sufficient community input as those decisions are made. >> in my last comment, made a comment that i would be open to all stakeholders, and i think it is important because our decisions are made on the input we received from the citizens of this city. that is who we serve. i listened to all, and an open to hear from all stakeholders. i'm very concerned that we do not disadvantage neighborhoods, particularly underserve

i suggested to step earlier that the board needs a little bit -- to staff earlier that the board need a little bit of progress reports that some of these things are going to change. we are in a complex environment. king's costs less or more than we thought they were. people aren't available, or whatever it is. but the board needs a progress report. this money you have budgeted for this use is not going to be used for that this year because we made a policy decision to do something else with it. that would be sufficient to me. but looked at the plan and look at what we did last year. a million dollars we thought we were spending on one thing is going to something else. that is bothersome to me. i think what commissioner wynns said about the way the budgeting is working -- it is not working for us. i think this discussion, although it feels a little bit painful because we are voicing frustration with staff, i think it is healthy. hopefully, it can be the basis for figuring out a better way to do things in the coming year. commissioner murase: i want to thank you for the side-by-side com
