hi, bob. >> good morning, robin. the reason why is because we have kind of like the conga line of storms in the west. here's the one from yesterday, across northern idaho and montana. light rain and snow left behind that, not that big of deal now. but notice this big batch of cloud cover coming in from the pacific. that rides all the way into the region overnight tonight through tomorrow, you're just going to get slammed again with heavy rain and lots of wind. let me show you how much rain over the next two days, something we're with pretty concerned about. there's the pacific northwest, vancouver and seattle. the purple shaded areas right there, computer models generated about eight to ten inches of rain right there. it will turner into snow for the highest elevations. avalanche watches for the olympics and cascades. the rain and thunderstorms really arrive overnight tonight and the wind picks up right around that time as well. a tough couple of days. back to the map, light rain, light snow. cascades, olympics, rain

i have some sympathy for bob zelikow's suspicion about grand strategies. if you look at the list of the nine points, they are not bad plaidç attitudes but they are l platitudes. being flexible, conflicting interests, so on. they are good guidelinesç but they are no at vandal. i think strategies involve choices. my classic example is the real strategic decision of roosevelt's decision in 1941 and 1942 to first establish and then stick to a germany first approach to winning the war. i think it is interesting that whatever else went wrong with the clinton administration's russia policy -- and there were some important successes particularly in foreign policy -- it wasn't for lack of a strategy. it was a clear decision that this was important and a clear decision of how to do it which was to back yeltsin both materially and medically and emotionally. there was a good deal of money and lots of presidential time put into the effort. i think part of the problem is that grand strategies dark first of all, there is a real reluctance to make real strategic decisio

hi, bob. >> good morning to you, robin. i want to give you the big picture because obviously hurricane ida well take up a lot of our time. it's in the gulf coast. this shield of rain is where the actual hurricane itself. back to the west you can see all the heavy rain across the northern part of the gulf. that's wrapped up with a trough of low pressure but not the same thing but it will be the same result. heavy rain all across the gulf. look at this cold front, that's going to draw everything in an easterly direction the next couple of days. heavy rain all around the gulf of mexico. we have hurricane warnings from are mississippi through indian pass, florida. all the bright red shaded areas, wind warnings inland all across the coast. about a four to six storm surge, four to six feet and that will start overnight tonight. look at the radar picture out of mobile. most of the heavy rain offshore. we'll follow that as it moves inland later this afternoon. rain around new orleans. you can see it there with that trough. back tow

bob van dillen is there. what's up? you have been watching ida since last week and this week and just turned again -- just changed in terms of its grading. it's weakening with the wind. it's a tropical depression. no matter what you call it, still a heavy rainmaker, witch. here are your bullet points. winds 35 miles per hour sustained. that makes it a tropical depression. you can see the "l" right there for low. if you notice all of the heavy cloud cover, it's to the north of the circulation with a couple of feeder bands dropping down into the gulf of mexico and that's where you're getting the heavy clouds from. the heavy greens, the yellows, the red, that's where the heaviest rains are coming in now. that's basically around atlanta to the northern half of alabama and moving away from mississippi and kentucky and into the mountains and back into central south carolina. here's the big feeder band dropping down into the region. you see the winds ahead of that 19 miles per hour, not that bad. 16 miles per hour behind it. w

the republican is bob mcdonnell, he is the favorite in the race. mcdonnell is the former state legislator and virginia attorney general as well. deeds has been a state senator for 18 years. let's talk about new jersey. the governor jon corzine is fighting hard for a second term. the latest polls show the democratic incumbent is running neck and neck with chris christie. there's a wild card in the deck, an independent candidate. his name is chris daggett. he is drawing significant support. president obama has campaigned with corzine as recently as sunday. sarah palin has been an endorsement of christie that was used in one of those automated phone calls that went out to prospective voters. dramatic race today may be for a congressional seat up in new york. a third-party conservative candidate, doug hoffman, has a chance to win because the republican nominee abdoesn'tly quit the race last weekend. the gop candidate then endorsed her democratic opponent, bill owens. today's special election will fill a seat that has been in republican hands for decade
