and now from washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: good morning again. washington has been fixated on the war on terror, but yesterday one of those weird stories cropped up that set washington on its ear. a new book claim bing by mark halpern and john hidealman reports that during the campaign last year senate majority harry reid was telling people privately that barack obama's campaign would be helped because he was, quote, a light-skinned african- american with no negro dialect unless he wanted to have one." reed spent all day yesterday apologizing to the president who said he accepted the apology and to a score of black politicians and leaders. but the episode does recall a very similar incident when then republican leader trent lott said that he had the country elected segregationist strom thurmond we wouldn't have had so many problems. that caused such a furor you'll recall that lott had to resign his leadership post. senator feinstein who is in california this morning, i have to start with that. is this going to have the same impact on harry reid?

i'm bob abernethy. it's good to have you with us. in the wake of the failed christmas day airplane bombing, the obama administration took new steps this week to improve airline safety. president obama ordered u.s. agencies to move faster and more accurately to prevent future terrorist attacks. he said while the vast majority of muslims reject al-qaeda, the u.s. must develop a strategy that addresses the challenges posed by lone recruits. under new t.s.a. procedures, passengers traveling from 14 nations, most of them predominantly muslim, are facing enhanced screening. many american muslim groups say while they are concerned about security, they are still worried that their community is being unfairly targeted by what they call "religious profiling." joining me is salam al-marayati, executive director of the muslim public affairs council in los angeles. mr. marayati, welcome. what's the matter with tougher airline security? >> nothing wrong with tougher airline security, but when we stigmatize and profile a population, that divides ou

. >> bob, you know, this discussion inevitably actually brings us back to lyndon johnson because the president who -- overread his mandate, tried to do too much and particularly tried to push the american system too far left, too much in favor of big government was lyndon johnson and it produce the this great conservative backlash. how do you think of that? >> i read it a little differently. i would say we have two presidents here. both of whom wanted to transform america. they both wanted to make america a different place. johnson, you know, was succeeding to a remarkable extent until he lost track of if in vietnam. july, 1965, he's doing two things. he has gotten through the voting rights act. we shall overcome, he said. he gets through this act in a -- just writing about it in the book i have now -- it's marvelous to watch him get this bill through the senate vote by vote. he does it. he's signing the medicare bill. this is the same month. july 1965. at that same time in the next week he is launching the first huge escalation, secretly without telling the american people, of the v
