first, bob orr with bulger's day in court. bob? >> reporter: scott, whitey bulger's being held tonight in boston in jail without bail for two brief court hearings there. the alleged mob boss-- who appeared wearing jeans and an unbuttoned white shirt-- faces multiple charges including racketeering and 19 counts of murder. the courtroom, we're told, was packed but quiet as bulger's family and relatives of some of his alleged victims looked on. now, bulger's return to the city he's accused of terrorizing came after the f.b.i. finally got a break in an old case by using a new method. in the end, it only cost the f.b.i. $50,000 and a bit of macho pride to catch whitey bulger. after spending 16 years and a small fortune in time and manpower searching for the elusive mob boss, the boston f.b.i. hit on a new tactic. instead of focusing on bulger, how about targeting his girlfriend? >> have you seen this woman? >> reporter: the boston f.b.i. convinced headquarters to produce this television commercial detailing the habits of bulger's compan

we'll bring justice correspondent bob orr back in with details on this. bob, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, this apparently did start out as a real plot, as you say, scott. prosecutors say two men who somehow had become radicalized on their own first wanted to attack joint base louis-mcchord in washington, then later changed their minds and targeted a military processing center in seattle. the f.b.i. got wind of this three weeks ago when a third man, who they tried to bring into the plot, turned and became an f.b.i. informant. so the f.b.i. then made sure that the conspirators only got dummy guns. in that sense, the plot was disrupted. but i have to say, this is still troubling. it comes just a few weeks after al qaeda jihadists called for more homegrown attacks here in the u.s. to avenge the killing of osama bin laden. >> pelley: thanks again, bob. news on the economy today suggests that the stall in the recovery could be with us for a while. the number of americans filing their first claims for unemployment benefits rose to 429,000 last week. also today, the price of oi

let's start with bob and go down this way. what do you think is the single biggest issue facing publishing century going forward? >> it's for publishers to adapt to the new technologies, especially ebooks. there are as many readers as there have always been. there are passionate, voracious readers, and an increase in ebooks in terms terms of fiction the past year. the role of the editor and writer in coming up with the idea and the public want to read is it strong. the way it's disseminated is completely new and creates major challenges as we're dealing with tectonic shifts in the way books are made and printed. although i still believe, as a traditionali, that people also want to read the physical books, and i still edit all my manuscripts with pencils.
