i have learned much from working with senator bob dole, majority leader bob dole, republican bob doleinning when i was a young member of the senate a while ago. beyond the fact that bob dole is the longest-serving republican leader of the senate we can say , that he is a senate legend. the best leaders i have known in my 43 years in the senate have shown three special qualities. the senate'sod unique constitutional role in the system. the second trait is the ability to bring people together, to forge agreements even when based on compromises. as -- little of great consequence is accomplished by any legislator alone, high achievement is a joint effort, especially with leadership like yours. a senate leader needs all of the tools. you have to be a quarterback, a shepherd, father, confessor, and you are every one of those. as a leader, he was a catalyst a , facilitator, a straight talker. he also had the best sense of humor of any senator i have served with and i could probably not repeat some of the comments we had, but i remember when he and george mitchell met every day, he would invi

i mean by that that bob is manic, bob is obsessive -- [laughter] bob is a workaholic, and sometimes hedoesn't listen because he is so intense upon correcting and helping -- [laughter] his author. so, but let me -- i thought what i would do is read a kind of love letter to bob weil that i wrote, it seems on the 24th of october in 2010. we, our paris book together -- our first book together was a monster. it was "god's crucible." now, neither of us really was competent to edit or write such a book. [laughter] but we felt, i felt it had to be done. i had gone to morocco in order to write a very small book on the invasion of the eye bean peninsula. and unfortunately, i arrived on the day of 9/11. and my then-editor said, oh, don't come home, book has got to be much larger. well, long story short, bob became the editor of that book. it did fairly well. it was translated into spanish and portuguese, indonesian, a big market that, and korean, indeed. we were hoping it would be translated into turkish, and it just so happened that i happened to be in turkey when we had good reason to believe t

it's not bob mueller job to tell the country what happened. it's bob mueller ebbs job to decide who has broken the law and who should go to jail and i say that because -- bob mueller may or may not be able to speak outside of the four corners of the indictment. to how is the country going to find out what really happened? how is the country going to find out what evidence we have uncovered that may not reach proof beyond a reasonable doubt of criminal activity? and that's our job. that's our job. and as difficult as that has been, and with all of the partisan tensions, that accompany it, it's still important or for that work to go on. and we have a lot more work to do. we have interviewed dozens of witness withs and tens of thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of documents. but there are yet a great many witnesses that we have not brought in who have really relevant testimony and perhaps or more importantly i have the benefit or o the liability of having been a prosecutor and worked on white collar investigation. it's not just about bringing

he thinks, quote-unquote, the reference to bob mueller. he was briefed earlier today by the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. one white house official told me that is an indication that they see him as a part of the process and not a part of the problem. those are talking points that we're getting from the white house. what we didn't see in that tweet, in that statement, that the administration put out was an acknowledgment of the fact that russia, in fact, did meddle in the u.s. election. and an acknowledgment there need to be next steps. what will this white house do to prevent it from happening again, particularly with the midterms looming. will they, in fact, enact sanctions, something that has been passed in congress and a lot of republicans would like to see this president enact those sanctions quickly. and so there's going to be a lot of pressure on next steps. this is obviously something that has roiled this white house. it has gotten closer and closer to the oval office. we know that the president's former top aide steve ban

bob is right. financial services and financial regulations really aren't the primary topic of trade negotiations, whether it's nafta or tpp, they're done separately through treasury and other agencies. but i will point out some things. nafta, well, you know we are renegotiating that. the u.s. has a big competitive advantage in financial services. $4.3 billion surplus in financial services with canada, $1.1 billion surplus with mexico. with respect to the tpp that you've heard about, we now have the tpp 11. president trump withdrew from that trans-pacific partnership agreement. when he withdrew, there had been a number of reservations that have been taken off the table because they were at the insistence of the united states. very quickly on financial services, the text isn't public, they're about to sign this agreement very soon, but there are commitments with respect to financial services regarding regulated financial institutions and investor and investment cross-board trade in services will also
