[ applause ]. every panel that i went to cheryl was introducing the speaker and moderating the panel. your questions were so thoughtful and incisive. you brought out the best in the speakers. terrific panel tonight. and i give you great credit for that. turning now to anne-marie. she's had a distinguished career. as a nurse for 22 years and then graduating from law school while raising six children. i think she has a 17 grandchildren now. as a lawyer she served as an assistant new york state attorney general for 13 years before running and winning a seat in the u.s. house of representatives. she joined the commission in 2013. and in feruary 2017 she was voted in unanimously as the act team chair, and last year president donald trump nominated her to be permanent chair. she has been my esteemed friend and colleague for the

it is not about bob adler, it's about consumer safety. and so we share that. and that's where we start from, and it has been my five years at cpsc have really been a wonderful five years because of bob adler. he has really been a true friend, and truth be known, we love our steak dinners, and i think that's what our true bond is. i want to begin by thanking the consumer federation of america for this opportunity to be here. and bob spoke about rachel, but i want to take a minute to really appreciate what rachel does to advance consumer safety. she's a tireless fighter. for the consumer and for consumer safety. if there's an event, if there's a hearing, if there's a briefing, rachel is there and rachel provides such important input. and so we recognized her and i want to recognize her again. the consumer is much safer because of rachel weintraub and what she does to promote consumer safety and product safety. i assumed and took on the role and that's where i first met bob adler who sent me a kind e-mail welcoming me to the agency. i have been there for the last five years. with the election, my colleagues chose me to be the vice chair. the way it works there, so the vice chair becomes the acting chair. when the administration changed, i became the vice chair and then the acting chair. i am the acting chair right now. the status of the agency is a bit odd, i will say. if you've watched any of our hearings or briefings, you'll notice that there's only one republican and three democrats. regardless of your party situation that's an odd situation and to be chairman in the minority is also an odd situation. which is why i appreciate bob so much. i'm waiting to be confirmed by the senate. there is another person waiting to be confirmed by the senate. she will replace commissioner robinson. then there's still a third vacancy created by a commissioner leaving the agency. there will be another appointment to that position and then we'll be at full tilt. there will be five commissioners. this morning, i
