bob redell is live in the back up. bob, you were supposed to be live -- you can't even get out of the truck at this point. >> reporter: no, we're on southbound 17 heading up the summit. we're about a mile and a half away from summit road. and according to google maps, it will take bus 15 minutes to get there because the traffic is stopped at summit road and we're trying to figure out how chp is detouring people. we assume they're detouring them back in the northbound direction or the side streets here in the santa cruz mountains. it's also shut down highway 17 northbound direction at granite creek road which is over the summit. again, because of this mudslide that happened about an hour ago if you want to put that image back up there, you probably have a abetter sense of what it looks like than i do. we're still trying to get to that location. again, we've been up in the santa cruz mountains this entire week. we know about the mudslide between sugar loaf and vine hill road. tuesday afternoon, cal tran has been trying to fix. we're trying to figure out if that mudslide is related to that or it's completely new mudslide. just driving through to santa cruz mountains this week we've seen smaller mudslides all over. and i mean all over. when we were on bear creek road we drove for 20 minutes the other day and there are several, at least a dozen mudslides, instans where you had the boulders coming out. the ground is saturated up here, it's very wet and unfortunately it's conducive to this type of thing happening. but as you can see, we're in the back up, trying to get to summit road which is shut down right now in the southbound direction, and as i mentioned, granite creek road shut down in the northbound direction. so, getting over the summit in the santa cruz mountains via highway 17 is not happening right now. so, if you have any plans to get to santa cruz this afternoon, you might want to be checking to see when they're going to get this reopened instead of having to do what we're doing right now sitting in this back up which extends for at least a mile and a half and take us at least 15 minutes to get to. reporting live here on southbound highway 17 in los gatos, bob waddell, nbc bay area news. >> bob, do us a favor and stick around. obviously you're not going anywhere any time soon because we are going to want to get updates from you. as bob mentioned this is the latest smud slide. getsing hard to keep track of all of them on highway 17. so, a clean up effort that was underway on highway 17 from tuesday's land slide took a tragic turn on thursday. a dump truck backed up, killing a worker and seriously injuring another. we're learning more now about the efforts to honor the man who died. on the granite rock construction website former coworkers remember 54-year-old robert gill of los banos. gill was standing behind that truck when it apparently moved back by accident and he was killed instantaneously. now, gill had been a member of that company for 15 years. right now this morning there was launched a you caring site set up to help his family. it's already raised more than $16,000. another worker, 34-year-old steven whittier was pinned underneath
