your fellow pennsylvanian, senator bob casey with us from capitol hill. and senator, before we jump into the unemployment issue, i did want to mention, i was reading the "new york times," it looks i can and you governor rendell and a lot of other pennsylvania's political leaders were partying this weekend. what can you tell us about that? >> we were both at the pennsylvania society in new york, it's a great gathering, started in 1899. and i just try to keep up with ed rendell's schedule that weekend. hard to do. >> governor, i'm sure you had a long receiving line. >> no, no. nobody -- i have no power and no money anymore, ari. so nobody wants to see me. >> okay. we will fact-check that a little later. senator, let's get to what you're fighting for. you did support the budget deal, but you've been pushing hard for the extension of long-term unemployment insurance. and i've seen several statements out from your office on that this week. what are you and your fellow lawmakers going to do to actually get us a vote on this? >> well, what we're trying to do is

joining me now, democrat senator bob casey. always a pleasure. nice to have you. >> thanks, alex. good to be with you. >> is your colleague, senator schumer, correct that 2014 is not going to be about obamacare but about jobs? >> i think he is, alex. wherever i go in pennsylvania, that's still the number one issue that people come to talk to me about, jobs and the economy. they're seeing good numbers in terms of economic growth. over 4% growth for the third quarter was good news. and the monthly job numbers are getting better, but there's still a long way to go. we, for example, in pennsylvania just went below half a million people out of work about a month or two ago, about 485,000, but that's still too high. i think the economy and jobs and the struggles and the real trauma that's been heaped upon the middle class not just recently but over a generation. i think that's going to be the number one issue. >> senator, let's together take a listen here to representative aaron shaw who gave the weekly address for the republicans yesterday. here's that. >> no matter how many actors and

pennsylvania democratic senator bob casey, member of the finance committee, joins us right now. senator, good day to you, and as we just were talking about this $19 billion, what are the prospects of finding that amount to offset the cost of extending those benefits for a year or even for a three-month extension? >> richard, i think we can find an juf set and we should. as you know, we went a lot of years in this country providing unemployment compensation without an offset. if that's what it takes to get it done, i think we can get that done. the key thing i think not only for families, those who are in need of emergency unemployment compensation, is to make sure that we put it in place for them and for their families but also for the larger economy. we don't continue this kind of unemployment compensation, so-called euc, emergency unemployment compensation, which went into effect under george bush in 2008, by the way, if we don't do that, we lose by estimate 200,000 jobs, by another estimate 300,000 jobs in addition to the cataclysmic impact it has on the families of the unemp
