we found mayor michael nutter and bob casey lending a hand. this is the signature project at the start of the day. thousands of volunteers taking part in community projects all across the region. mayor nutter attended another dr. king day event in philadelphia. spoke to the crowd at the martin luther king, jr. recreation center. more than 100 volunteers turned out here to help clean up the facility. this brought together arts and cultural organizations. the volunteers as you see here painting a mural. because this is a federal holiday, schools are closed post offices and government offices are also closed. so are many banks in the area. also, a number of dr. king events happening all across the area today. here are just a few of them. a re-enactment march starting at 4:00 in southwest philadelphia on woodland avenue. it will be followed by dr. king's i have a dream speech at missionary baptist church. the unity choir will perform high-spirited songs at the national constitution center. then over in new jersey it's the ninth annual mlk challeng

how does this new set of announcements going to sit with that trajectory joining us now, senator bob casey. always a pleasure. how does that help the president make this sweeping case on raises taxes to certain parts of the american population? >> ronan, i think to a large extent what this does the economic data compared to where we were a couple of years ago, just imagine the first six months of the president's first term, because of what had happened prior to him coming into office 780,000 jobs lost each and every month. almost staggering to consider that. so i think one thing he can say, the strategy that he put forth and that i voted for and others did, the recovery act, the strategy to cut payroll taxes at one point, for a two-year period allowed the kind of job growth we're seeing the kind of numbers now. i think there's some validation in that we have to focus on it. when we say we i mean both parties have to focus on the middle class and wages. >> but does the growing economy really give him a mandate on this or is this just down to global market forces one of the key changing issu

. >>> joining me now with the reaction from capitol hill is democratic senator bob casey.enator, always good to see you. thanks for joining me. >> good to be with you. >> should the jordanians and japanese be negotiating with isis? >> well the jordanian government has to make its own decision. that's a determination they have to make. but this is so difficult when you have a pilot, someone who serves the people of jordan in the military, who's captured. this is a very difficult situation to deal with. and we should also put on the record that the contribution that the jordanians have made to the fight against isis they're part of the coalition, they're a great american ally. but they share such a longer border with syria that they're obviously drawn into this in a very significant way. so we hope for the best. but i can't second-guess or give advice on what they should do. they have to make the determination based upon their intelligence and their own security interests. >> do you see any parallels with the situation -- the u.s.'s bowe bergdahl, the swap with the taliban?

my fellow pennsylvanian senator bob casery, senator casey plans to reintroduce this legislation. i will be cosponsoring this legislation when he does. and i call on done pick up where it left off back in 2010 and to promptly enact the children of fallen heroes scholarship act. mr. president, i also want to take a brief moment to address the recent spade of protests that we have seen, people who have gone to the streets across the country often harshly criticizing police officers. and let me be clear. people want to protest? they have a right to protest. and i would never challenge their right to say what's on their mind to convey whatever message they'd like to convey. but i would hope that they would keep a few basic facts in mind as they consider or, in fact, carry out a protest. one is, any human institution is going to be imperfect. that is the nature of humanity. it consists of human beings, so it will be imperfect. the fact is that the overwhelming majority of police officers are honest, hardwork being, decent americans and they're motivated by the desire to serve and prote
