steve: when you look at tennessee republicans, they mention bob corker, lamar alexander, howard baker, conservative, but moderate. it about tennessee republicans that separates you from other members of the the gop? sen. corker: you say moderate, but we just look at it realistically as a way of bringing people together. on fiscal issues, i would take a backseat to anyone on fiscal issues. at the same time, i think it is a way that you approach people that you deal with. in this committee, we never start a single legislative item without it being bipartisan. we start trying to solve a problem. i think something has been in the water in tennis the. we have been able to have -- something has been in the water in tennis. we have people who try to bring out -- something has been in the water in tennessee. most of the people ended up. being national figures, we just have that in tennessee, and hope it continues. steve: what motivates your politics? sen. corker: just a desire to se problems, to affect people, in a positive way. there is no place like the public arena to be able to do that. i

i'm going to start with bob karp -- bob corker who has announced his support for brett kavanaugh. i'm going to read part of the statement quote i believe judge kavanaugh has conducted himself as well as anyone could expect that this process of my plan to vote to confirm him. what that means is there are three republican wildcards. it's all about the math kennedy. it's about the math comments about the math, it's about the math. they have to get 60 votes and they are only 51. i would look at jeff flake from arizona lisa murkowski of alaska and susan collins from maine but i caught up with jeff flake a couple moments ago and asked what he was thinking an iffy and made his decision and he said to me quote it's tough. he said i'm still processing things. asked senator flake what he needs in the next few hours in the next coming days. does he need paperwork or does he need to pray and he was not willing to say what he needs. we also asked him if he was willing to greenlight chuck grassley two of the committee votes properly keep in mind the committee which is scheduled to vote tomorrow

we have a truly disappointing, to put it mildly, almost shocking response from senator bob corker. we will get to that in a minute. >>> and remember that a full investigation means questioning all of the witnesses. it always does in every investigation. this time it would include brett kavanagh's friend mark judge, who according to dr. ford's account, was the other stumbling drunk, that was her word, stumbling drunk teenage boy in the room at the time of the sexual assault that she describes. today mark judge's attorney sent a letter to the senate judiciary committee chuck grassley saying he has nothing to tell the committee and will not cooperate. his letter said the only reason i am involved is because dr. christine blasey ford remembers me as the other person in the room of the alleged assault. in fact, i have no memory of the alleged incident. brett kavanagh and i were friends in high school, but i do not recall the party described in dr. ford's letter. more to the point, i never saw brett act in the manner dr. ford describes. i have no more information to offer the committee a

one name that would have been on that list was senator bob corker, one of the first on the judiciary committee to delay the original vote after these allegations surfaced. he is not running for reelection and is a notorious critic of donald trump but two hours ago he announced he would vote yes to confirm brett cavanagh, quote, both individuals provided compelling testimony, nothing that has been presented corroborate the allegations. there is no question brett kavanaugh is qualified to serve on the supreme court and in a different political environment he would be overwhelmingly confirmed. the sentiment was shared by republican senator lindsey graham. >> the reason we find ourselves in this spot is the process was used in political fashion. i voted for sonja soto mayor and alana kagan and we would not have done this to them. >> reporter: senator grassley is the judiciary chairman into the committee will vote tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. a procedural vote saturday to lunch debate on the senate floor and another one monday to end the debate. mark your calendars, it is looking like tu

possibly also bob corker, but i would list the first three, bob corker of tennessee. and what you saw all last week as the senate judiciary committee kept moving in response to dr. ford's request and her attorneys' request, they had to move because they had to continue to build a process acceptable to those three republicans and keep them on board for the absolute necessity of voting to approve and confirm judge kavanagh. if those republicans back away or slip away, then the white house is going to have to go through a shake down cruise it's never had to contemplate. replacing brett kavanagh with another nominee, and knowing that fateful decision -- and i'm not predicting it. but should it be made -- puts this nomination in a lame duck session after a midterm and a completely turbulent political environment. that's why they feel if they can possibly achieve it, to push this through even if it creates enormous backlash the kind senator cruz and others are experiencing. >> let's sink to into a little more. you speak about the book and the potential of nominating supreme

even senator bob corker, a frequent trump critic, tweeting, republicans extended a hand in good faith. if we don't hear from both sides on monday, let's vote. president trump maintaining the restraint he's shown since the accusations were first revealed. >> hopefully the woman will come forward, state her case. they will look at what she had to say from 36 years ago. i don't know about the other party, but judge kavanaugh's anxious to do it. >> two of brett kavanaugh's former classmates say they have no recollection of the party where ford said the assault occurred. ford says mark judge and patrick smythe were at the party and that judge was in the room when the attack took place. smythe sent a letter to the senate judiciary committee saying he has no knowledge of the party or the alleged improper conduct. smythe described kavanaugh as a person of great integrity. >>> in a separate letter, the judge writes, brett kavanaugh and i were friends, but i never saw bret act in the manner dr. ford describes. judge's memoir of his time as a student at georgetown prep is now drawing attention.

to your point, josh, bob corker, said this is what all of us have understood to be the situation fromhe impact of this piece other than angry president and very fiery rally in billings, montana? >> to me, as a journalist, i find it more shocking that the chairman of the senate foreign relations committee is saying these things about the president on record all the time. rather than a senior administration official in "the new york times." they are both important. this is like building on a body of evidence that is pretty -- well understood. also this idea that people around the president try to contain the president. very well reported by the reporters at "the new york times" and "washington times." rex tillerson. h.r. mcmarch tester. despite the senior official is putting this in stark terms, this is a huge decision for the individual. that individual is basically torn up about their role with the trump administration. that is not unique. hundreds of people are in the same situation. it gets to the question of what should these people do? should they quit or stay and steer the mob to
