bob redell is joining us live from san ramon. two bay area counties may still require masks in certain medical settings, right? >> reporter: correct. good morning. yeah, starting today here in contra costa county, alameda county, you still must mask up if you work in a skilled nursing facility, but counties are going along with the state guidance to allow doctors and nurses like in the hospitals, like the one behind me, to still go without masks if those facilities choose to. so the health department here in alameda county is still requiring those who work in skilled nursing facilities to mask up as far as hospitals go, it's up to their own discretion. starting today the state is lifting mask requirements at hospitals and other health care facilities. again, this is statewide. however, each institution, city or county can set their own guidelines around the masking. we reached out to several hospitals, asked about their plans. john muir health will only mandate masks for vulnerable patients, kaiser permanente is lifting requirements for patients and visitors. here is dr. peter chin-hong, infectious disease specialist at ucsf. >> we're all moving in the same direction. pandemics do end a
