by the close, dow jones industrial average lost 260 points to finish at 17,140. nasdaq fell 113. s&p 500 was off 36. bob pisani has more on today's sell off. >> it was another tough day for the market. now, we did not end at lows, but that was not consolation. volume was heavy, t 70% above normal as institutional sellers came in and reduced exposure across the board. two big problems on u.s. stocks. first is lower for longer interest rate. it's killing financials. it was another ugly day for money center banks like bank of america and jpmorgan, but even regional banks and met life got clobbered at well. second problem is the dollar. it's rallied about 3 trading sessions. big pressure on commodity and commodity stocks. energy names were down as were copper stocks. steel stocks like allegheny and iron ore names like bal irk. any good news? utilities and telecoms like verizon were at or close to new highs because they do well in low rate environments and volatility was down today. that's strange. i think some traders do not believe this wild volatility will conti b kerry is meeting with eu leaders and he c

the dow jones industrial average rose 129 points to 17,804. nasdaq added 36. the s&p 500 was up 12. bob pisani has more. >> reporter: it's going to be a busy week capped off by the brexit vote in the uk. brexit has traders confused. it's gotten more xlakted than stay in or out of the european union? markets seemed to move toward the idea the uk would exit the european union and stocks were down. the greatest surprise then would have been if the vote was to stay in the eu, markets would have rallied. that's reversed, the market has rallied on the belief is uk is likely to remain in the eu and it's likely at least part of the rally we had if the uk had stayed in the european union had happened today. now the risk is to the downside, the greatest market move will come if there is a vote to leave. the markets gyrated so much traders aren't sure how much the market might move if there is a vote to stay in or get out. fed chair janet yellen will be testifying on capitol hill the next two days. investors will be looking for any major clues about the pace of future rate hikes and whether if bri

jones industrial average was off 119 points today to 17,865. nasdaq dropped 64. the s&p 500 down 19. for the week as a whole the nasdaq took the biggest hit. it fell 1%. bob pisani has more. >> reporter: the stock market got smacked around by the bond market and on friday by the currency markets and uncertainty over europe's future. it started in the middle of the week and yields on 10-year german bonds approached zero and dropped sharply in the united states. that pressured bank stocks with many u.s. bank stocks down 2% to 4% for the week. it was a lot worse for european names and it's been that way all year. big bank stocks like deutsche bank and society general are down more than 20%. a poll in the uk showed a jump in support among those who wanted the up k to leave the european union. that's put pressure on the british pound and strengthened the dollar. a strong dollar is not good for xhod tizz or commodity stocks so oil dropped and energy and industrial stocks like chevron dropped. for all this drama we're essentially flat for the week. the volume was only about average. in other words, prices dropped because buyers weren't interested. there was no r
