our guest this week is congressman bob latta who is the top republican on the energy and commerce subcommittee on communications and technology. our guest reporter is cat zakrzewski of the "washington post." congressman latta, you brought up broadband is one of the major issues that your committee will be facing this year. what do you think of the new proposed subsidy program for broadband? >> guest: again right off the bat as i mentioned a little earlier that you have to have a firm foundation out there and that firm foundation starts making sure that we have accurate maps. we need to have the data and in our last hearing we had recently is that republicans would focus on making sure we have accurate information, accurate data. because when you look at the dollars that were appropriated and the last august to make sure certain communities out there that we get the help out there. but until you have that information it's difficult. that's what i think it's tough with the numbers that were thrown out by the democrats and the white house. they went from 60, 80, $100 billion. how are you going to

know-- >> we will leave this here and take you live now to that conversation with ohio congressman bob latta speaking at a telecom conference hosted by the free state foundation. we join it in progress. >> there are underserved areas and i'll touch on that. we as republicans on the energy and congress committee fought for our american broadband act and the 24 bills this year, and to think about a couple of big things we want to make sure, if we're cutting that red tape and we're streamlining the process so people can get the service they've got to have. and we want to target those unserved areas, our rural areas and make sure that we really turbocharge the public and private investments across the country to make sure that we get this thing done. our proposal is $23 billion and again, we want to make sure that we're helping the unserved areas across the united states and it's in-- the years go by too quickly, but i worked on the data and those that we've had and to make sure that we do have the accurate math across the country and that's through the data act. again, before you start dumping
