people were listed, if at all, as john who is well, bob lewis for. unless you had very specific names and very specific locations, it is very difficult to do that tracing. i live in washington, d.c. i have had access to the national archives. i spent a bit of time down in the archives going through census records. fortunately, my family's names were unusual. i did not have to look for a thousand smiths or 10,000 johnsons. the names in the family were unique. so i found some records. but then there is a cut off. i have also been to the daughters of the american revolution. 11 for mission is in diaries. i found -- a lot of information is in diaries. i found the family's name that was the family that own my family in alabama. there was a diary that went back into the 1500's. in that, there were references to some individuals who were enslaved. it is difficult to connect all of those dots. >> where were you born? >> i was born in detroit. my mother is from alabama and my father is from louisiana. >> and the name lucane is what? >> it is a creole name. yo

bob? >> i have a great pleasure this morning to introduce one of my heroes, one of my real heroes, congressman john lewiswho is one of the most courageous persons the civil rights movement has ever produced. john was a national secretary of the student nonviolent coordinating committee, a big deal when i was a young man. snc. they were trying to register african-americans to vote. i mean, just think about it. black people without the right to vote in this country. it seems bizarre, but it did not seem bizarre in those days. john was literally laid his body on the line for social justice, from beatings to freedom rides to citizens to at lunch counters and beyond. he is, and i just realized this today and was shocked to learn at, he is the last living speaker from the 1963 march on washington. it is my honor and a great privilege to introduce congressman john lewis, a genuine american hero. . >> lewis was one of the founders way back the, gosh, in the vietnam war days she was one of the draft counselors for the peace center. >>reporter: bobn with the peace and justice center and grand parents for peace. 2 organizations clark was involved with. >> loouts is a fighter and grand woman. i cherish having known her. >>reporter: clark involvement in the local community goes back to the 1950s. she was a member of the original lafayette senior recreation center. site that now houses a methodist church. >> she wanted to build a senior housing here in lafayette for seniors. so that they could stay in their community and not have to move away when they needed support. >>reporter: today i spoke with one of miss clark 6 children t.she told me quote of her mother she thought it was really important that we are one world and we all live together in peace. war is not the answer. she led her life by example. as for what happened with the memorandum at family member told me at this point in the short-term probably nothing will change but then the family will be looking at what happens in the future. in lafayette, abc 7 news. >>> let's turn
