[laughter] i'm joined by fellow vanessa to share a republican perspective on how to face the challenges faces us today. we are encouraged to hear president obama speak this evening about the need to create jobs. all americans should have the opportunity to find and keep meaningful work and the dignity that comes with it. [applause] many of us here tonight and many of you watching have family or friends who have lost their jobs. in fact, one in 10 americans is unemployed. that is unacceptable. here in virginia we face our highest unemployment rate in more than 25 years, and bringing new jobs and more opportunities to our citizens is the top priority of my administration. good government policy should spur economic growth an

this is the first chance that a large audience will get a new look at the governor, bob mcdonald. what should they know about him? three met mcdonnell won by a landslide in november's election against democratic opponent. he is very conservative, both as coolly and socially. many people are already leaving him a margin of victory and given his kind of made for television kind of persona and appearance are already iambic speculation that he will be a candidate for all the national stage and it sure did four years perhaps six or eight years now. >> but is a brand-new governor. was it any surprise the republicans chosen to make it response tonight? >> i don't think it was a great surprise. as you will recall, in 2006, shortly after former virginia governor tim kane a governor with a lack did with response to president george w. bush's state of the union address that year. by mcdonnell asserts in a transcendent and arriving figure in the national gop. and so it makes a lot of sense that they would want to present him to a national audience. >> what are you hearing about things to his

so for bob mcdonald to then turn around and win 59-41 was a pretty remarkable achievement. some of that was helped by our good campaign and some was helped by an environment that tilted more in our direction than it had been even back in june. but again, that just shows you that a poll in june that we took that had us behind we were using it as a planning tool not to predict the election. oops. some of the pages didn't translate here. well, there's other reasons in terms of understanding how to read polls. but we're running somewhat low on time, so, again, the bottom line is and i'll then throw it open to final questions, and i know if you guys are either too tired or too shy to ask questions which i find hard to believe, that dr. thurber will have a couple of good questions. laugh but polling helps you put together a road map for where you want to be. here's where you are now, how do you get to where you need to be either on election day or when the final vote is taken in the legislature, legislative body, whatever it is? the ballot test early on can be one of the most lea

virginia matter and showing up and having dozens and dozens of offices there, but a year later bob mcdonald wins state for governor and republican, conservatives win up and down the ballot. which one is likely voter model for 2010? i think it is important to be a little more open-minded and inclusive when it comes to who might participate in politics in 2010, and, more to the point, who might sit this one out. that is something that afflicted republican candidates in 2006 and 2008. and the question is open now who that will affect in 2010. you can't be somebody with nobody. that's why candidate recruitment is so significantly important. and i'm not a bean counter. i don't believe in leading with gender in talking about immutable characteristics as being particularly important in identity politics. particularly for conservative candidates. at the same time, we are starting to see an uptick in number of women filling up the pipeline and running as conservatives this year. and i think that's fantastic, if they want to do it. that's the big if. i'm always asked by media why are there only 17 un
