the bob mcdonnell defense is basically, to argue, three things. rst one, number one thing they're arguing is maureen mcdonnell, the governor's wife, she's the one who took all the bribes. but she's not a public official. first lady of virginia isn't really a job. she's technically just a private citizen and so, therefore, as a private citizen, the bribes she accepted by definition, they're not bribes. that's part one of their defense. part two, the defense is arguing that it can't be the case that she accepted bribes in exchange for official acts by her husband, the governor, because they had a terrible marriage. and he didn't like her very much. they never spoke. they hated each other. she was terrible. he couldn't talk to her. so naturally they couldn't conspire to provide this businessman anything of value from the governor's office in exchange for all this money and all these gifts that the businessman gave to the mcdonnell family. this is the part of the defense that's turned the mcdonnell trial into a really lurid spectacle. as governor bob m

yesterday bob mcdonnell's sister took the stand to talk about what she said were two different sides f maureen mcdonnell. she said she was often manipulative and unpredictable. today a defense witness testified she was possibly suffering from some mental illness. when bob mcdonnell himself took the stand, he testified that even on the day he was elected governor of virginia, he could tell his wife wasn't going to be able to handle it well. quote, she was yelling at me about something, suggested it might have been about what she was going to wear. later in his testimony, he said he was ready to become governor, but he said that his wife did not feel ready to enter that phase of life with him. and so they accepted $165,000 worth of gifts and loans from a wealthy businessman. i mean, what's the -- apparently this is a really expensive, really experienced defense team. and they somehow must be planning to connect these dots and make us believe that bad marriage and wife people don't like equals not corrupt and shouldn't go to prison. but this bad marriage defense really is the defense tha

in fact bob mcdonnell kind of looked exasperated. take a look at the walk-in right there. this morning mcdonnell was escorted once again by his daughter kaelin. the prosecutor has drilled mcdonnell about several handwritten notes he took from a phone conversation with jonnie williams about a loan. he said did you understand that he's offering to loan you $150,000 in star scientific stock? that you would only have to repay $90,000. mcdonnell said, quote, it really wasn't clear to me. all i wanted was a loan for $50,000 in cash. mcdonnell has also disputed what his long time broker testified to about him wanting to separate, having a separate account for star shares. he says he doesn't recall saying that, doesn't remember that happening. then there were rapid fire questions about mcdonnell promoting anatabloc. you've seen that picture of him holding that bottle of anap block -- anatabloc. he was asked how many other companies and products did you pose with that have given you a $50,000 loan, have given your wife a $50,000 loan, have given your daughter $15,000 for her wedding

every morning bob mcdonnell comes in first and then maureen mcdonnell comes in. but anyway, mary sutherland talked about that shopping trip, that infamous shopping trip where jonnie williams dropped $20,000 on maureen mcdonnell. she said that maureen mcdonnell was having a great time. she was so happy that she was going to have these dresses bought for her. jonnie williams bought her two oscar de la renta dresses. maureen said this was better than getting the inaugural dress because she could keep these dresses. sutherland did admit jonnie bought her a dress but kept refusing it but jonnie williams kept insisting. finally she said she accepted the $1500 dress because it was easier than fighting about it. she said the dress is still in its packaging with tags on it and that she presented it to the prosecution yesterday. we still haven't seen that dress, how much. probably the most damaging testimony by mary-shea sutherland was maureen mcdonnell's demeanor. she said maureen yelled and screamed constantly, not just at her but other staff members. it got so bad one d

you don't hear anybody saying that about bob mcdonnell. you know, i don't know his wife. that i know that works for bob says he's a good decent man. everybody that i've known that knows bob throughout the years -- please let me finish. i'm getting to a point. he is a good decent man. i've heard the opposite about his wife. do i feel comfortable talking about his wife? no. i have heard repeatedly as we hear about spouses or as we hear about some members who are just absolute terrors that this is not a scam. this fits in with everything i have heard about these two people since they first came on the national scene in 2009. let me just say if bob mcdonnell is getting this and he is finding a lot of stuff out he may not know for the first time. like, for instance, his wife had an emotional connection with this man, this donor of his and it sounded like she wanted to have a lot more than just an emotional connection with this man, then i think a husband in the middle of a trial may decide to go this way. >> so that may all be true. there is an inherent risk to this defense wh

>> i'm glad they're resting. >> reporter: on his final day of testimony former governor bob mcdonnell was surrounded by his children. >> my son just got back from duke last night. my other son is coming back from vanderbilt. >> reporter: mcdonnell says he accepted many of the gifts from jonnie williams such as golf outings and vacations to spend more time with his family. he testified he didn't know about other gifts to maureen and could not have conspired with her because the two were barely communicating. how is it having your children here with you? >> wonderful, thank you. >> reporter: the final witness was fbi agent katherine weber who analyzed the couple's time together. she found that in the 22 months covered in the conspiracy charges mr. and mrs. mcdonnell spent 90% of their nights together, but the defense poked some holes in her testimony. >> that argument was somewhat diminished by the fact that they didn't draw the chart to scale. >> reporter: political analysts say it will come down to who the jury believes, jonnie williams or bob mcdonnell. >> william certainly initiated

bob mcdonnell's attorney is talking to jurors right now. after that prosecutors get a final turn. at the heart of this case, did they conspire to help businessman jonnie williams, to use the power of the governor's office in exchange for gives and loans. the mcdonnell attorneys argued today absolutely not. proof their claim jonnie williams really didn't get anything. >> in closing arguments mcdonnell's defense attorney took aim first at the prosecutors accusing them of tearing the former governor's life apart without finding proof he did anything for jonnie williams. his attorney told jurors, "the federal government has not produced any evidence, least of all that bob mcdonnell committed bribery or defrauded a bank." maureen's attorney cast his client as a victim of jonnie williams. she was gaga for him. she says the former first lady was a cash nut about -- she says she cannot be guilty if her motives are not corrupt. now, let's talk about corrupt motives." at that moment a picture of jonnie williams appeared on the video monitor. supporters seated behind the mcdonnells laughed.

. >> reporter: that's right, bob mcdonnell's sister managed those beach properties. e-mails he received from bob and maureen mcdonnell, that talked about johnny williams. the guy who is helping us. he said payment on those loans totaling $70,000 wasn't due for three years and he never saw a payment. now, also today, testimony that bob mcdonnell was endorsing that product to stop state officials. >> what was that like? >> virginia's personnel chief, sarah wilson, testified that governor bob mcdonnell pulled out a bottle during a meeting on the state's health plan and said he used it and that it helped him and his wife. the prosecutor asked her if she had ever seen the governor bring out a product like that before. and she said no. she didn't know why he pulled it out, it was personal. >> what was it like? >> lisa hicks thomas remembers it differently. the former secretary of administration recalls the governor saying that anatabloc would be good for state employees and asked them to meet with the makesser of anatabloc, that meeting never happened. mcdonnell's chief of

governor's second day of testimony in his federal corruption trial. >> reporter: we have seen bob mcdonnell and maureen mcdonnell come and go from the courthouse separately. today we learned out why. he moved out about a week before the trial started and moved in with a priest friend at a local rectory. he testified for several hours and told jurors what he hadn't revealed to closest friends, the story of how the marriage disintegrated. bob mcdonnell was composed as the defense attorney walked him through the 22 years in public office. he was away from home more and communications broke down. maureen was stressed especially when she assumed the role of first lady. mcdonnell says by 2011 he began to work later to stay away from the mansion and his wife's constant complaints and says it came to a head in early september in 2011 when he set aside an entire weekend to spend time with maureen but came home to anger. she said she was yelling at me and had almost uncontrollable anger. i was heart broken that maybe this was the end of our marriage because we couldn't communicate anymore. that blowu
