he was hoping bob mcdonnell could get him money through the tobacco commission or could get the virginia universities to do research. jonnie williams never got that but what he did get was the governor's attention, maureen mcdonnell's attention. he got meetings set up. he had a launch for his product at the governor's mansion. he attended a meeting with health care leaders at the governor's mansion. prosecutors argued to the jury that this was a clear quid pro quo, that this was bribery and extortion. today jurors returned a verdict that said that they believed that that the governor and his wife had entered into this corrupt arrangement with jonnie williams. and jonnie williams was given immunity for his testimony. he went on the stand and testified without fear of prosecution. this case started with an investigation into jonnie williams on stock impropriities. he will not face charges because he delivered what prosecutors needed and that is the story line about the corrupt arapgment. my colleague, david culver was in the courtroom as the verdict was read. the most dramatic moment by fa

we start with the successful federal prosecution of former virginia governor, bob mcdonnell. charged with 11 counts of corruption and convicted on each and every one of them by a jury of his peers on thursday. mcdonnell's wife, maureen, was convicted on eight corruption counts. another one for obstruction of justice. bob mcdonnell becomes the first governor or former governor in the history of virginia to be convicted of a crime and his wife becomes the first former first lady to suffer the same fate. late they are morning we talk about whether the verdict could inspire similar prosecutions elsewhere. and the name chris christie comes to mind wooe. we'll get into it later with a former prosecutor. for now we dig deep near why and how the jury reached the verdict that it reached. last night one of the mcdonnell jurors, kathleen carmody. told rach rachel maddow what they thought of the defense, that they couldn't conspire because the marriage was in bad shape. >> i did not doubt there was strain in the marriage and stress. and that mrs. mcdonnell was having a difficult time adju

. >> it has been an astounding fall for the former governor, republican governor, bob mcdonnell of thevirginia. he was a rising star in the party to put it mildly. there will whispers about him about contender for higher office. he insisted we were barely speaking. none of this is possible. what the prosecution was able to prove to the satisfaction of the jury was that there was a -- there were gifts that were given to him in exchange for something that you cannot give away, and that something was the prestige of the office of the governor of the state of virginia. that they -- that governor mcdonnell gave away something that was not his. the prestige of the office of governor of the commonwealth was not his to give. and he got $165,000 worth of loans and trips and private jets and yachts and shopping sprees in new york, and a half dozen golf outings, and $1,500 dinners for two, and he did so in exchange for promoting this product for this man, who was from richmond, virginia, who got this preferential treatment and the restige of the governor's office in exchange for what bob mcdonnel
