that is bob melvin. he is still in his giants jersey and his cap. he is taking questions now from the press because the press conference wrapped up not too long ago. he was joined on stage by chairman of the board of directors greg johnson and president of baseball operations. they welcomed melvin back to the bay area. he is a native bay area -- native to the bay area, i should say, and he said he knows exactly the importance of giants baseball to fans and to people here in the bay area. now, both leaders from the organization saying they couldn't think of any other person they would want for his position. he said it's their relationship that comes second to what bob melvin is going to bring to this organization. bob melvin says this is a dream come true for him. >> you know, i grew up around here, as everybody knows, an absolute crazy bay area sports fan, you know, whether it was cal and stanford, whether it was the 49ers and the raiders, the giants and the a's, the warriors, i was into it all. and, you know, i was walking over here today thinking,

but ultimately they decided to hire bob melvin and bob melvin. well, leaving san diego and san diego, not on great terms. he had a team with the payroll of about 250 million dollars superstars up and down the lineup. but they did not make the playoffs. it's not often that a team allows a division rival to pluck from their own. but that's exactly what the padres did told them. go ahead and interview and get bob melvin, if you want, even though bob melvin have one more year left on his contract, so not sure if the giants will need to compensate the san diego padres for that. but the bottom line is he is coming home back to the bay area. and just in case you're wondering, has this happen again, especially with the padres and the giants? and the answer is, yes, they did this back in 2007, it worked pretty well for the giants. some guy named bruce bocce. he came from the padres to the giants and ended up winning 3 world series and he is back in the world series on friday. so we have history on our side. the giants, they will introduce bob melvin a lit
