bob pisani joins us now from the floor of the nyse to help us explain what on earth happened. i understand there were particularly strange trades in the etfs. >> yes, that caught my attention, michelleere were dramatic drops in prices at the open and dramatic drops in prices of etfs as well. let me give you one example. take the s&p etf, you think coke, johnson & johnson, colgate, et cetera. it closed friday around $75. it opened at $70.40. fair enough. it was halted immediately. when it re-opened five minutes later there were several trades at 46.22. that's a nearly 30% drop. it did eventually recover after other halts but only when the market came back. 30% is a big drop for an etf. the underlying stocks that were open were not down nearly as much. i asked the ceo of virtue, one of the world's biggest marketmakers what could explain such a large drop. >> it's very difficult for a marketmaker like virtu to come up with a particular price. in that instance we have to widen out our prices. we're not sure where true value is for that composite at that moment in time. >> he's right. in this case, none of the stocks were down anywhere near 30%. this is not the only case that was out the
