week ago today antolin garcia-torres was convicted of kidnapping and murdering the morgan hill teenager. nbc bay area's bob redell is live in front of the hall of justice in san jose. bob, last week, we were there at the courthouse when sierra lamar's mother says the trial was excruciating for the family and this is not going to be any easier for them. >> no, and the mother of sierra lamar expected to be testifying during the penalty phase that began at around 9:00 this morning. good morning to you, kris. both the prosecution and defense presented their opening statements in the phase of the trial each running 20 minutes apiece. the prosecution, of course, arguing that antolin garcia-torres be put to death for the 2012 murder of 15-year-old sierra lamar. the prosecutor david boyd saying to the juries this morning, they it, the defense, also ask you to extend this at mercy, americansy he never extended to sierra lamar. garcia-torres' defense doesn't agree with it but accept it. antolin garcia-torres' life has value even after the guilty verdict and should not be extinguished. court has resumed from a break

morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. this morning his attorneys are wrapping up their closing arguments and soon it will be the prosecution's turn. nbc bay area's bob redell is live at the hall of justice in san jose with what we're hearing in the courtroom today. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. within the past 75 minutes the prosecution wrapped up its closing arguments asking the jury to not reward antolin garcia-torres for the alleged silencing and disposing of sierra lamar's body, to hold him accountable for her kidnapping and murder. the defense has now begun its closing arguments in the hall of justice here in downtown san jose behind me, and off the bat is attacking the prosecution's decision to also try the client on the attempted kidnapping of three other women in the area. garcia-torres' attorney says the claims are only meant to create a bias against them in the eyes of the jury. his attorneys are expected to question the way the investigators collected dna evidence, the 15-year-old girl abducted five years ago on the way to the school bus stop and they may blame cross-contamination for her dna being found in his car and on h

morgan hill teenager. this as jury deliberations continue this morning. the question is, will they find antolin garcia torres guilty of murder? legal analysts are weighing in. bob redell live at the courthouse this morning as we await this much anticipated decision. bob, this is five years coming. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. today being day two of jury deliberations in the trial of antolin garcia torres here at the hall of justice. according to a santa clara university law professor we spoke with, she tells us one issue expected to weigh heavily in the jurors' decision making process, the fact that sierra lamar's body has never bib found. >> there's no crime scene, no weapon. the jury has to put a lot of pieces together. >> the defense has tried to argue that sierra lamar was not abducted five years ago on the way to her school bus stop in morgan hill, that instead she ran away and is still alive. during the three-week trial, the prosecution presented evidence of garcia torres's dna on her clothes, which happened to be found in a field in morgan hill, and her dna in his car. the jury is expected to take several days to deliberate and come back with

bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. man faces several charges including attempted murder, child endangerment and domestic violence. his name is eduardo ramirez. he's 36 years old. according to morganl police department, a neighborhood called 911 about a man and woman yelling at each other. when officers arrived, they said they found ramirez in the parking lot, repeatedly stabbing himself in the neck and shoulder area with a pocket knife. officered him and placed him under arrest. in the home, officers found a woman, two children under 14 and a baby all suffering from stab wounds. all four taken to the hospital. ramirez is scheduled to be in court this wends. reporting outside the main jail in san jose, bob redell. >> thank you, bob. >> the defense is now up. they'll be calling their first witness in the sentencing phase of the sierra lamar murder case. this follows last week's emotional testimonial from the missing 15-year-old's parents and friends. they'll try to kwish the jury that antolin garcia torres who was already convicted of killing lamar, does not deserve the death penalty. that sentence is moving forward despite new information that a lead detective and a witness in the
