bob orr has been talking to his sources. what are you hearing now? >> the information is tough to come by. the government as you might imagine is in a scramble like everyone else trying to figure out what they're up against here. we try to make one point and we have to be careful that we're dealing with very very few facts and just some raw pictures. a short time ago we showed you what looked to be a picture of one of the explosions going off. one thing that struck me and i was talking to another person, is the explosion looks to be two things here. it's at ground level obviously and also it looks to fairly small blast radius. you can't read a lot into that. it could be even from a manhole cover. i have to you though that does not look -- i just emphasize this is speculative. it does not like like natural gas explosions that we've seen in the past. the department of homeland security is on this. the justice department is mobilizing the fbi. right now we have to wait. people are desperate for information. we have to wait for them to get on location. t

homeland security correspondent bob orr has been talking to his sources all afternoon and, bob, what can you tell us about the investigation so far? >> reporter: scott, at this hour there is no suspect in custody. we are told, though, by officials that there is a young man who they are talking to who quote/unquote could be potentially linked. but it's very, very early on and it's far too strong to say this is a suspect. this is someone who was seen near the site of the blast acting suspiciously and they have to run that to ground to find out if he had any involvement at all. we know there were two devices that exploded. think had been placed in trash cans. there are also two unexploded devices that were recovered near the finish line and that can be very important because those unexploded bombs and also the remnants of the exploded bombs could provide the kind of forensic evidence that might eventually tell us who put them together, how they were put together and where this attack originated. but right now let's be clear, this is a wide-open investigation field. the suspects range fr

bob orr has been talking to his sources in washington. bob?>> scott, i think at this point what is not coming forward is helping investigators with their direction. what i mean by that is they've been looking at their intelligence channels, their threat reporting matrix prior to the event. they're also monitoring so-called chatter after the event. a couple things they're missing here: there was nothing in advance that suggested a threat aimed at this date or the boston marathon in particular there was nothing to indicate any kind of planning on the channels u.s. government officials monitor. and in the aftermath of what now appears to be twin bombings in boston, there is no chatter claiming responsibility. no chatter suggested this is connecting to something broader. >> pelley: the governor of massachusetts, de value patrick live. >> mindful of the fact that we don't have the whole picture yet but we have gotten a good deal of information. commissioner david will take all of us threw the information that we have and i'll come back and talk abo

and now he's back to seek medical treatment. >> beth, thank you so much. >>> right now back to bob orrmanhunt continues. and i wish i had better news that they had actually made real substantial progress. it's hard to know exactly whether or not they're getting closer, but they're being very persistent, and they're still in that same quadrant, going house by house, block by block and almost inch by inch. we don't know whether or not the suspect who we're looking for here, dzhokhar tsarnaev is still there or has found his way out of that perimeter. just going back to what people have told us earlier today, he may not have been all that familiar with watertown. so that just leads one to believe that he might not have a comfortable safe harbor to go to that he knew of, that was readily available when the shootout ensued. but that's somewhat speculative. authorities are very, very concerned because they really don't know what his plans might be. they haven't yet established a full picture of his past contacts, who his friends were, who he associated with, who he's most recently, for exampl

. >> joining us now from washington is justice and homeland security correspondent bob orr. bob, with the suspect in the hospital, in this condition, where does that leave investigators? >> it's not clear, jeff, if or when dzhokhar tsarnaev will be able to talk to investigators, we have to say prosecutors really don't need his statement to build a criminal case because they have video evidence of him planting one of the bombs and also police to testify that they saw him take place in two shoot-outs with officers? watertown, massachusetts. but besides all that the fbi really does want to talk to him about the plot, how the bombs were built and how the brothers initially escaped detection. >> jeff: what do we know about its brother's possible terror connection if any? >> well, so far the fbi can't find any evidence that the brothers had any coconspirators in this attack or any connections at all to aar lr ter rohr group, either foreign or domesque. of course they are still looking but from thece s far ofs believe the old ever brother was the key. his social networking activity

bob orr reports. >> reporter: sources say female dna has been found on a fragment of one of the bombs used in boston. that could have come from a spectator in the crowd or maybe from a clerk who sold the bomb making materials but investigators say it's also possible it could have come from a female accomplice. katherine russell is not a suspect and has not been charged in the plot. but fbi agents met with russell at her parents' rhode island home to collect a dna sample. investigators will compare that against the dna found on the bomb remnants to determine if she ever came in contact with the device. russell's family has issued a statement saying they were shocked by the attack. investigators want to question russell to find out if she had any knowledge of her husband's plans. the fbi is also taking a fresh look at tamerlan tsarnaev's six-month trip to russia and dagestan in 2012 to determine if he received training from known terrorists. of particular interest a russian born canadian militant. like tsarnaev, he was a boxer and both men were in dagestan last summer. he was killed the

as we continue to watch this live event unfold before our eyes, let me bring bob orr back in to the conversation. bob, you have some new information. >> reporter: well, scott, we're going to do a little housekeeping here and clean up some reports that are out there. today, just to give you an example, as we wait for this situation to play out there in watertown, to give you an example of how far the investigation reached. there were some search warrants served at umass dartmouth in new bedford, mass, and what i'm told-- and a number of places reported this-- they reported three people have been taken into custody in connection with the bombing investigation. now, here's what actually went on, according to an official i talked to. he said, look, there was a reason to believe that the suspect that they're still looking for, the suspect who we now think might be in that boat, may be, of at this location, a home in new bedford, massachusetts, because there were some associates there and friends and suitemates. he went to school there for a mile. so people were kind of separated. they were detained.

bob orr is tracking the story from washington. bob, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, gayle and charlie. well, the first order of business is to try to find the remaining brother who is on the lam, somewhere around the boston area, they believe, the man who has been now infamously noted white baseball cap backward. that's dzhokhar tsarnaev, we believe. he's believed to be 19 years of age. his family comes from the chechnya area, which you mentioned. his older brother, tamerlan, was killed in a police shoot-out last night around watertown, massachusetts. so the first order of business is to try to find that guy because they're worried that he's heavily armed, he may have other explosives with him, he's already demonstrated a willingness and an ability to kill, and they're concerned about what he could do next. the other order of business, though, beyond the tactical police search in the pressing manhunt is trying to find out are these two brothers connected to anything bigger. are they connected to any kind of domestic or foreign cell. it's ki

bob orr is in our washington bureau. he's been talking to his sources about the investigation. bob, what are you hearing? >> scott, it appears we're dealing here with a couple of relatively small but still powerful bombs that were placed in trash canisters along the marathon route. one near a crowd of spectators at the finish line. one a little further on down the race course. they went off in close proximity which seems to suggest some planning here. either more than one person was involved or it was somebody, investigators figure, who had the time and the knowledge to set these timers in some kind of sequential pattern. we don't know if this is a foreign group or a foreign-inspired plot or if it's a domestic group. that's wide open right now and investigators are just starting to go through that. scott? >> pelley: we understand there is surveillance video being examined by the various investigators. we also understand that a third bomb that did not explode has been taken intact by the boston police and diffused. what could all of that mean? >> well, that's very important evide

but bob orr in our washington newsroom has been talking to his sources all afternoon and, bob, what are you hearing at this point? >> well, scott, the field is still wide open as to who might have done this and for what possible reason. the bombs don't appear to be very large. i had one official say they didn't appear to be particularly sophisticated but keep in mind that's just guess work because they haven't forensically looked at it. the blast radius was relatively small but, still, in a crowd they did devastating damage. this doesn't appear to be the kind of work that al qaeda normally does. they normally go for something on a much grander scale. on the other hand, officials have pointed out to us this does have elements of coordination. there was more than one blast. so there was a coordinated plan. that may or may not mean more than one person was involved. it could be a very small cell. it could be a lone wolf inspired by either an international group or a domestic terror group or it could be someone acting out their own hostilities. we don't know yet, but the officials from the

homeland security correspondent bob orr is in washington following the investigation. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say the bombs contained an explosive similar to black powder. they were laced with bbs, ball bearings and nails. trauma surgeon said many of the injured have multiple shrapnel wounds. >> they are numerous, numerous. there are people who have 10, 20, 30, 40 of them in their body or more. >> reporter: investigators believe the bombs were hidden in black nylon backpacks. and housed inside sealable metal pots called pressure cookers. pressure cooker bombs can help boost the power of relatively small devices by briefly constraining the blast. and when the cookers do explode, they can add large chunks of metal to the shrapnel spray. the i.e.d.s have been popular with terrorists. al qaeda published a how-to recipe in an on-line magazine. several of the bombs were used in the 2006 attack on trains in mumbai india. in 2004 and 2010, the department of homeland security warned law enforcement that pressure cooker bombs could present a threat in the u.s. in the failed time s

bob orr has been following events with his sources in washington and as we watch these live pictures, bob, i'd like to bring you in. what do you know that's new? >> reporter: well, scott, i think there's a real question now. there's no question the suspect is in custody. this is the right guy. everyone now agrees across the board. but i think the real question now becomes what is his condition? we've held back in reporting some things for a while for a couple of different reasons but i can now tell you that at the scene of the shootout last night there was the beginning of a blood trail this which told investigators pretty early on that he had been wounded or somehow injured in that melee. but the blood trail did not seem to be constant and it did not continue so there was some doubts about how seriously he might be injured. but then as you reported and as john as reported when the homeowner peeked in the boat there was described to me quite a bit of blood and there was blood on the ground approaching the boat. so if you think about that they believe that the suspect climbed into that

bob orr is talking to his sources.d morning. >> this is a tough investigation, but surveillance pictures are providing some promising leads. investigators privately circulating pictures of two young men who seemed to be acting suspiciously around the time of the bombing. and the fbi seems particularly interested in one of the men. >> investigators are focusing on a man, spotted near the scene of the second explosion. sources say a nearby surveillance camera captured images of the man carrying a backpack and talk owning a cell phone. while the fbi has not identified him, he is described as a young white man, as tall as 6'2". sources who have seen the tape y ablown. wearing a black jacket, gra hoodie and white baseballap backward on his head. he appears to place his backpack on the ground, after the first explosion, he fled. moments later, the second blast occurred near the spot where he had been standing. in addition to reviewing surveillance tapes, investigators are also working to collect and piece together other bits
