bob redell is live with an update.morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura, and the east bay park regional district police do not want to reopen this section of the delta deanza trail until the sun comes up and investigators get a chance to come out here if you look tonight the police cars, on the trail. they want to have a view of that crime scene to see if there are clues before they reopen this to the public. it was around 830 last night a man was shot in the back of the head while on this section of the trail here in pittsburg. he has been taken to the sutter delta medical center. at last report he was listed in critical condition. we believe he is in his 20s. they don't have suspects, they don't know why he was shot. was this random, a robbery, something smells we spoke with the east bay police to get a sense of how bad is crime in this section of the trail and this officer i spoke with said it doesn't have a reputation as such but we know that the trails overall had problems in the past. several years ago there

our bob redell is live with an encouraging report out this morning. let's hear the good news, bob. >> reporter: well, also the bad news. good morning. over the past 24 hours there have been what you might appear to be conflicting signals over the future of jobs in silicon valley. cisco systems, san jose's largest private employer has announced it will shut 6500 employees, roughly 9% of its work force. the computer networking equipment make ser trying to cut expenses in response to slower sales and increased competition. about a third of those employees are taking voluntary buy-outs. the remainder will be laid off. employees here in the united states will be notified some time in august though cisco is head quart erd here the company has locations all over the world so not all of the layoffs will come from here. while this huge tech company is cutting, other firms in the valley are expected to take on new people. a new survey released expects a 15% jump in new high tech jobs over the next two years. nova that headed up the study came to this conclusion

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us with the details. >> good morning. not what he was hired to do but that's what he ended up doing. you might recall last week when we reported that the highest person in the state was a prison doctor, is a britnprison doctor last year took home $770,000. turns out he hasn't been able to practice medicine in the corrections system for the last year and a half because of alleged incompetence. he has essentially been on mail room duty at the high desert prison in susanville since last 2009 while still being allowed to take home a fat paycheck. why has this happened? the state wants to fire him and actually did at one point but he was rehired on appeal. when he was reinstated they owed him not only his base pay of $235,000 but back pay of $540,000 for the two years he wasn't working fight the termination. you put those two figures together and come up with three-quarters of a million dollars in take home pay for 2010. even though he is still, quote, a prison doctor, the "times" reports they won't let him practice medicine b

today in the bay's bob redell is live in the neighborhood with an update. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. one community activist we spoke with tells us she is planning a news conference for later today to call for more police accountability, after sfpd killed a man in the bay view district. you can see people left candles, flowers and balloons in the man's memory. and memory of the man. his name was reportedly kenny harding, a 19-year-old man recently released from prison on parole after serving time for a sex crime. and he was a person of interest in a deadly shooting last wednesday in seattle in which three people were wounded and a young woman was killed. she was a bystander who wasn't involved in the dispute. flash forward to late saturday afternoon, two san francisco police officers stopped harding at third and oak dale in the bay view for a muni fare violation. because he didn't have a valid bus transfer ticket. when they started questioning he started to run away while firing several shots at them. one officer fired back and wounded him.

bob redell joins us live with a look at the latest time line. ning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's still a couple of years before debris from the japan earthquake and tsunami starts washing up on the shores of santa cruz and other parts of northern california and oregon and washington. 2013, the early part of 2014 is scientists' best guest. oceanographers believe it will hit by next spring which is one reason they are so involved in the tracking of this debris. they just released this computer simulation of the debris field. you can see it on your screen. it shows the journey across the pacific kogs. they base this on wind. it's an estimatation. it's slow moving traveling east at 10 miles. perhaps what is most impressive. the "mercury news" reporting that it encompasses an area approximately 1300 miles long, 350 miles wide, roughly the size of the state of california. the tsunami in march sucked out entire towns. we're talking about everything. people, homes, cars. scientists wonder how much will end up on our shores. bodies would li

today in the bay's bob redell is live in santa cruz with details. >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about from the tsunami and the earthquake that struck in march, the debris from that not expect for a couple of years to hit the shores of santa cruz, washington and oregon. 2013, 2014. oceanographers released this simulation. they base it on wind and ocean currents estimates, they believe it's traveling east about 10 miles a day. it is enormous. the "mercury news" reporting it covers approximately 13,000 miles long. that's roughly the size of california. the tsunami sucked out entire towns, everything, people, homes, cars, scientists wonder how much will end up on the shores. bodies will likely have decomposed. lots of other material will deteriorate or sink. live out here where the organization save our shores having the second largest beach cleanup of the year, july 5th, the day after july 4th. that getting under way right now as we speak. reporting live in santa cruz, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll let you go so you can help out.
