let's get straight to bob redell live at south san francisco right now. bob, you had a chance to talk to the ntsb chairman now. the question, what is she saying about the pilots not being tested for drugs or alcohol after the crash? >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoke with ntsb chair hersman about that issue, why those pilots were not drug and alcohol tested after the crash of asiana flight 214. she tells us that it's up to the airline's policy as to whether or not that happened. she does not know if policy was followed saturday morning. that is something she tells us the ntsb is still trying to understand. ntsb investigators headquarter at the hotel here in south san francisco are also trying to understand why the auto throttle was not working during final approach. the two pilots at controls of the 777 told investigators they thought the auto throttle was armed and maintaining a steady 137 knots, the minimum speed necessary for safe landing. question, why did they not notice this was in the the case, they were in fact too low and too slow, dangerous

"today in the bay's" bob redell just arrived on scene. what's going on? >> reporter: officers have been here for a few hours. san jose's homicide unit is investigating this death of this child because that's standard when it's not clear how the child died. we're talking about a 7-month-old baby boy. someone at this apartment complex on makati circle dialed 911 around 1:15 to call for help to let emergency know there was a 7-month-old baby boy who was unresponsive. it's not clear if it was one of the boy's parents who made that phone call. the boy unfortunately was already dead when police arrived. officers have made no arrests. sjpd says it's too early to tell if something criminal happened, if the baby was murdered or died from natural causes like sudden infant death syndrome otherwise known as sids. you can see police are still here investigating the death of a 7-month-old baby boy found unresponsive early this morning. a 911 call was put in. homicide is investigating, but it should be noted that is standard when it's not clear how a child has died. rep

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in burlingame and overlooking the wreckage of the planeill on the runway. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, lawyer rachlt a pushback from asiana airlines saying they don't believe its pilot, the one with only 43 hours in a 777 which is the equivalent of three to four transatlantic flights. they're saying they don't believe that was a problem given that the pilot also had time in a simulator and had landed at sfo before, just not in a 777. saturday morning was the first time that pilot ever attempted to land a boeing 777 at this airport, the ninth landing in that particular model of aircraft. the airline says he was in train being an experienced copilot who had more than 3,000 hours. the ntsb says know one realized there was a problem until the final seven seconds of the flight. with the approach too low and too slow, they gunned the engine and tried to aboard the landing. it was too late. the plane slammed into the runway and caught fire. the first time he's ever attempted to land that aircraft. to the layperson this sounds mor

bob redell joins us live. new information about officers originally showed applause the this particular home. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. fresh information from sjpd. this started around 1:30, 3 1/2 miles from the location. officers were responding to a call of three people breaking into mailboxes on a road about three miles away from where we're at now. the people ended up fleeing. witnesses gave police a description of their car which led them to this house behind me here on north 3rd near intersection with empire. they did a records check of the car and found out that the owner is on probation, and they had a right to do a search. they ended up talking to people in the house, talking to a woman when a pit bull came up from the basement and started biting one of the officers. at least one of the other officers ended up shooting and killing that dog. that officer who was bit has been taken to the hospital and is going to be okay. officers are still out here. we see animal control just arrived, pr

"today in the bay's" bob redell live in burlingame with plans to make pilots better prepared. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yes, the chief of asiana airlines did say before boarding that flight that they need to beef up their training, specifically their simulator time. this comes up because the pilot who is behind the controls of asiana flight 214 when it crashed here saturday morning had only 43 hours of flying time in a boeing 777 which you can see right now is destroyed on the edge of the runway here at sfo. we've spoken with the ntsb this morning. they told us they did speak, interviewed two of the four pilots yesterday. their plan is to interview the other two either this morning or later this afternoon including the pilot who was at the controls of that flight saturday morning. the idea is that by conducting these interviews, they can glean the kind of information that they cannot get from the cockpit voice data recorder. >> those interviews are very helpful to us. we want to make sure we understand what the crew was doing, why they were doing it, what their perception

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in burlingame with what we're learning new this morning. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoke with debra hersman, the ntsb chair, saying they only got through interviewing two pilots because of a translation issue from korean to english. the idea is, perhaps this morning, they would interview the other two pilots, one of those pilots being the flying pilot, the pilot that was at the controls when asiana flight 214 crashed at sfo. the safety agency, ntsb, is supposed to be holding a news conference later this afternoon and the idea they impart on us some of the information they glean from these interviews. you might recall that the captain was in training, having never landed a 777 at sfo leading to questions of why didn't his copilot who was experienced in the aircraft take over, and if he did, why did the plane crash? we have a better y50id of what the timeline was like. about a minute and 12 auto pilot was disengaged. 34 seconds later, 500 feet, 134 knots, below the 137-knot minimum required for a safe landing. it ta

today in the bay's bob redell live near the airport in burlingame with details on the changes. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yes, the faa is advising foreign carriers landing here at sfo to use a new type of approach when they're coming to land here. this is after the crash of asiana 214 that the faa is now concerned about how well some foreign pilots are able to land at this airport. there are two ways you can land an airplane. you can use a visual approach and you've got the instrument approach when you rely on equipment like a glide scope to help guide you in. the problem is the glide slopes have been turned off at two of sfo's runways because of construction, including the one on the runway where asiana flight 214 tried to land earlier this month. since that crash, the faa says it has noticed an increase in the number of aborted landings at the airport including one by ava air six days ago when that taiwanese aircraft was coming in way too low like as an nah. but unlike asiana, ava was able to abort in time. the faa is now advising foreign carriers to

. >> we start things off with bob redell and the latest on that investigation. he's live right by that scene. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon and laura. the ntsb informed me they will be hold ag news conference later this morning at 11:30 to update us on the investigation of the crash of asiana flight 214 and perhaps release new details surrounding this horrible accident. the agency has examined the cockpit voice and flight data recorders and come up with a preliminary idea of what was happening in the cockpit during the final moments. when it was on final approach saturday morning, that boeing 777 was flying too low and moving too slow, well below 137 knots or about 158 miles per hour. that's the minimum speed required for a safe landing. seven seconds before impact, the pilots realized this. three seconds later, the flight stick begins to shake to alert the pilots they are about to stall. a second and a half before the crash, they throttled the engines in attempt to go back in the air and abort the landing. south korea is announcing its offici

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in burlingame overlooking the crash site which has been fairly active in the last few hours. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. you can see over my shoulder that workers have been out on runway 28l. they've been out there since last night cutting apart that boeing 777 aircraft that was once asiana flight 214. it's too big to be taken away whole. throughout the night a crane has been lifting the pieces out of that grass si area and hauling them to another site on airport property until the airport can find a permanent place to store the wreckage or have it salvaged. one reason this is an around-the-clock operation, the airport is rushing to get the runway reopened hopefully by sunday afternoon. with only three runways in operation, travelers have been experiencing delays and some cancellations since saturday morning's crash. once this wreckage is removed, which it might already be -- it's hard to tell from this vantage point, the airport will have to slurp up any jet fuel that was spid. they're working on fixing the seawa

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in burlingame with more on what we're learning this morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. i spoke with the ntsb who confirmed that they did interview two of the four pilots on asiana flight 214. those interviews having taken place yesterday. the safety agency wouldn't elaborate on what they learned. you might recall the captain was in training, having never landed a 777 here at sfo leading to questions like why didn't his copilot who was experienced in this aircraft take over? why did it take so long for anyone to realize the plane was coming in too low and too slow for the final approach saturday morning. about 1:12 before impact, auto pilot was disengaged. 34 seconds later the pilot was at 500 feet at 134 knots. that number is crucial because anything below 137 knots is below the minimum required for a safe landing. at this point it takes another 28 seconds before the crew tries to correct. at eight seconds out before impact, they're at 112 knots, 125 feet, the slowest speed they ever were at was 108 knots. again, that's well be

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live at thecene with what he's learned from police. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. it's standardbn) any time you h the death of a child, especially a 7-month-old baby boy that police would assign the homicide unit to this case to try to figure out whether or not something criminal took place or if this was natural causes. we're at the terrace villas apartments here in south san jose off mikati circle where about 1:15 a call came in to 911 to say the 7-month-old baby boy was unresponsive. when the police arrived, the boy had been declared dead. police, as you can see, are still here on the scene where they've been for the past few hours. no arrest haves been made and they're trying to figure out whether this is criminal, whether foul play was involved and perhaps if this 7-month-old baby boy died from natural causes, perhaps sudden infant death syndrome, something along those lines. it's standard in this case until they decide it's not criminal that the homicide unit is assigned to this. that's what's happening right

"today in the bay's" bob redell live in palo alto this morning to explain. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this is raising concerns over a big brother. palo alto police department started on tuesday using a patrol car outfitted with one of these. you can take a look at it. they just showed it to us within the past hour, an automatic license plate reader. if you're not familiar with the technology, it's basically four cameras on top of a squad car. as the squad rolls through town, that camera system records and scans the license place of all surrounding vehicles and immediately alert the officer if there's a stolen other lost vehicle or alert to a car registered to someone with an outstanding arrest warrant. it also records the license plate data of innocent people as well and stores that data. that's where the aclu and other privacy rights advocates have a problem. the aclu said in the past it doesn't mind these readers scanning license plate numbers. it doesn't like the fact that law enforcement is storing reams of data of where you are

nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live in morgan hill where the suspect is said to face some new charges in court. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon t is possible he might enter a plea to those new charges, a few hours from now, 1:30 this afternoon, 20-year-old nicholas lehrmine is expected to return to south county court for his arraignment. morgan hill police announced during interviews with parents and children the past several day they have discovered two more young girls allegedly abused by lehrmine. one is 5 years old, the other 7. police say their detectives were able to corroborate their statement and find evidence to support their claims. lehrmine was arrested a week and a half ago after a 6-year-old girl told her parents that he forced her to do something earlier in the day while at the ymca, paradise valley elementary child care center, where he works as a child care provider. in the process of that initial investigation, police say they discovered another victim of sexual assault. so right now, there are four alleged victims. investigators say they als

bob redell joins us from san jose with this woman who has a very deep passion for cats. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. yes. the woman who lives here co-founded the stanford cat network. she has dedicated her life to rescuing cats that have been roaming free on that campus. she took in at least 100 of them into her home. they were here overnight because she thought they'd be safe. clearly, that turned out not to be the case when a fire started early this morning, around 1:45. she was inside the home. her dog was fortunately there with her, another dog that she had rescued who was alert enough and save her, unfortunately you not the case for her cats. there just aren't enough good homes for them. and they come home to live with me as well. and -- oh, my. >> reporter: shock over the incomprehensible. almost all the cats carol miller spent her life rescuing gone within minutes, many trapped in their kennels, consumed by smoke and fire. >> i had probably close to 100. they were well cared for and terribly loved. they were like my children. >> reporter: the smoke ala

nbc bay area's bob redell is live in palo alto with a look at the patrol car that can automatically read your license plate. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla not only read your license plate but store the information on where and when your car was spotted. hence, the privacy concerns. on tuesday the palo alto police department joined the list of at least 30 other bay area law enforcement agencies who now use this automatic license plate reader, which in palo alto's case is four cameras mounted on top of just one patrol car. as that car drives around town, those cameras scan and read every license plate within roughly 30 feet and alerts the officer if hearn has come across a stolen vehicle or a car, lemon say, registered to someone with an outstanding warrant. police say this is much more efficient and i lous officers to keep their eyes on the roads. starting august 26th, santa clara sheriff's office will start holding onto the information at least a year that would be a database invaluable for investigators trying to let's say track the past movement of a known crimina

right now, bob redell is live. >> reporter: yes. some of the most interesting information is about the pilot's flying experience with regard to the boeing 777. this pilot only had 43 flying hours, which is equivalent to three transatlantic flights. he also had time in a simulator and had landed at this airport before, just not in a 777. saturday morning was the pilot's first time landing a boeing 777 at sfo. his ninth time anywhere in that particular model of aircraft. asiana airlines says he was in training with an experienced co-pilot at his side who had more than 3,000 hours flying 777. after examining the cockpit voice and flight data recorders, the ntsb has determined that flight 214 was coming in too low and slow in final approach, well below 137 knots, the minimum speed required for a safe landing. the pilot realized this seven seconds before impact. three seconds later the flight stick alerts them that they are about to stall. a second and a half before the stall, they try to abort the landing and go back up into the air. >>

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from the coroner's office in san mateo county with what officials say happened. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. we just listened to a news conference that took place within the past 45 minutes, san mateo county coroner's office, the coroner did confirm that 16-year-old passenger ye ming yuan did survive the asiana flight 214 crash but was killed later when one of the first responds, a fire department vehicle, ran her over, causing multiple blunt injuries. the fire chief, joanne hayes white, spoke offering condolences and apologize to the girl's family, offering to meet face to face if they so wished, adding that her and her colleagues are heartbroken, especially considering that they are in the business of saving lives. the chief confirmed the young girl was run over by specialized airport fire truck called an arf, which stands for airport rescue firefighting. they are still trying to figure out which one was specifically responsible for her death as there were many on scene that afternoon. these are the trucks that were

bob redell has more from a neighborhood on the lookout. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. the san mateo county sheriff's office has been looking for this person who has been lurking outside the windows of homes in a neighborhood fwhort of san carlos there have been two instance, both on laurel street both between 9 and 11:00 at night. the first took place tuesday of last week, a woman snourg her home on the 300 block of laurel called police when she saw someone watching her. then a again this past monday night at a home on the 100 block, same situation, woman in the shower, peeping tom just outside the window. >> both incidents involved bathroom windows so the individuals inside were showering or in the bathroom area. the best thing we are saying to the resident help us help you. make sure you draw your blinds at night, as both these incident happened at night time. keep your blinds closed, keep your shades closed, lock your windows. again, if you see something, somebody outside your house you don't know, give us a call. >> re
