bob redell is joining us live at the intersection. bob, what have you learned so far? >> reporter: the woman had right-away according to witnesses and what they told police. we are here at the intersection of 34th and mckee and have spoke on the a restaurant owner who tells us this intersection has been a problem for quite a long time. it was so bad they actually had to fight to get this lit pedestrian crossing signal installed a year and a half ago. and this was activated last night when around 8:00 this woman was crossing the street from over there from that neighborhood presumably to come this way to go to one of the stores. you can see cars did stop according to witnesses like they did just now, except for one. it was a speeding suv that was going above the posted speed limit. it hit and ran over this woman as she was walking in the middle of the crosswalk. again, with the lights activated and looking right away, unfortunately, that suv did not stop according to police. it did stop briefly at a light down the street but then continued on the interstate and has not

bob redell, the nurses union using its voice to fight back. >> reporter: national nurses united in the east bay, the nurses at the texas hospital did reach out to them to have them tell the world what they say is going on in dallas. during a news conference yesterday in oakland, the national nurses united union related stories on behalf of the nurses who wanted to remain anonymous, those at texas health presbyterian, the same hospital where two health care workers contracted the ebola virus, those nurses say that thomas duncan had been left out for several hours in the open, near other patients, before being put into isolation. when aused of not following protocol, nurses said there was not protocol. they say they didn't have proper clothing to deal with the contagious patient, they improvised leaving body parts exposed. that hospital released a statement that reads, quote, we have numerous measures in place to provide a safe working environment, including mandatory annual training and a 24/7 hot line and other mechanisms that allow for anonymous for, unquote. live here in the south ba

between 101 and 85 in south san jose, where we find "today in the bay's" bob redell. does it look ready to hope? >> reporter: looks that way. some argue it better be because the substation has been sitting nearly empty since the four years -- in the four years since it was built. the merc reporting a soft opening for the south san jose police department's south substation. not a hard opening, if you will, regular police officers are not expected to occupy it yet. instead, a handful of community service officers who are trained to handle just lower level calls, freeing up the fully trained officers to handle more serious issues. the substation completed in 2010 but never occupied because of budget issues. in other words, wasn't enough money to staff the facility with police officers, not clear when staffing levels will increase. again, right now they have money for the community service officers, not actual police officers. and again, whole point of the substation is to reduce response times in the south bay. the city councilman who represents the district believes whe

bob redell just spoke to the doctor's attorney. what's going on, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. the doctor's defense attorney just told us this is bittersweet for his client. on the one hand, he's no longer going to be charged for hiring a man to kill his wife, but is without the love of his life. this afternoon the district attorney's office will drop the murder charges against the doctor. we spoke with the deputy d.a. by phone earlier this morning. she tells us that her office first had doubts about their case against the doctor back in july, which is why they released him then with the understanding they wanted to re-examine certain aspects of the case before this afternoon's hearing. this morning she said they reached a decision to drop the charges against the doctor, in quote, the interest of justice, unquote. his friend, galvez, still stands accused of stabbing to death the doctor's wife. this happened inside their gilroy home on april 1st. she showed the d.a. documents that proved galvez is a con man. those are her words, who was t

bob redell is live on mt. hamilton. you learned gps technology helped to find the woman in her car. >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you, kris and sam. we're talking about onstar technology that we understand sent out the first alert that the driver of that white chevy cruz had crashed yesterday afternoon, but unfortunately for this woman, as you can see, the car isn't very visible from the side of mt. hamilton road, where we're standing right now, because it was a good 500 feet down the embankment. it had been hidden by brush. this woman was stuck in her car, it was on its side from the time of the accident, around 2:00 yesterday afternoon, until around 5:00, 5:30 this morning. that's when authorities were finally able to pinpoint her location by pinging her cell phone. so we're talking about a good 15 hours alone for this woman, when rescuers reached her, they found she had moderate to severe injuries. it took another three to four hours to prepare her, extricate her from the car, and get her ready for tr
