"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san francisco this morning. bob, the group signed a full-page ad appearing in this morning's "chronicle." you can't miss it, it is huge. >> reporter: it is on the back side. it is a full-page letter to pope francis asking the pope to remove him. you've got ceos, a retired battalion chief, professors, teachers, other business leaders and members of the community. they take issue with the archbishop's stance on some moral issues. specifically gay marriage. he also requires that people who work and teach at the four catholic schools here in the city, that they abide by a morality clause. in a letter they argue that that is against the personal beliefs of some of these people, that it's -- they have to do this under the threat of losing their jobs. so basically they're asking the pope to remove the archbishop and they say that he has fostered, i'm quoting, "an atmosphere of division and intolerance." the archdiocese in response says this is just a small group of people. it's just over 100 people who signed this lette

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose, and bob, the coroner just left the scene about an hour ago. did that divulge any clues? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. from what we've been able to gather from our conversation with a police officer here out on the scene, this does not appear to have been a random crime. it's not clear, though, why this person was shot and killed, a woman along bascom. that's where she was found, in front of a pool supply store. her body left lying in the street. she was still alive when paramedics arrived. they tried to save her, but she died on the scene. police do have at least one or two witnesses who they are interviewing. it is our understanding that they were with the woman when she was shot. might have even known her. again, police are questioning those witnesses to try to identify the suspect who police believe is a man and to try to figure out what led up to her death. again, they are trying to find the suspect. no arrests as of yet. but a woman unfortunately shot and killed around 10:00 last night here in san jose on bascom near s

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live on the stanford campus this morning. , many people are applauding the change but many students say they're surprised this was not already a fact. >> reporter: yes, some students are surprised to hear that stanford university, kris, didn't have this expulsion policy in place for students who commit a sexual assault. it just hasn't. you might recall a case of leah francis, a stanford student who said another student sexually assaulted her last year while both were home other break. there were protests when the university didn't expel, but instead suspended that student for five quarters. that student it must be noted was never charged in court because of lack of evidence. more recently a swimmer accused of sexual assault was not expelled but voluntarily left campus while his case is in the courts. yesterday an 18-member task force here on the campus made up of the administration, faculty and students did change campus policy. students will now be expelled from school of a three-member panel finds they committed a sexual ass

bob redell on the scene along with investigators. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. within the past 20 minutes, the coroner's office here in the south bay did remove the body of this woman where she had been lying dead on the right side as you look down the road right now, where you can see the crime scene. looks like technicians are searching an area in front of a pool supply store right near where she was shot, looking for any other possible evidence. she had been shot in the road or in that general area around 10:00 last night. police are still looking for a man who shot her. they don't believe this was a random crime. they believe that she was with this man and at least one or two other people at the time that she died. don't know what kind relationship that they had, if they were just acquaintances or friends or what they were doing out here in the middle of the sidewalk near the road around 10:00 last night. investigators are interviewing the other person or persons who are with the man and woman who witnessed the shooting

that's where we find bob redell, who is live in san jose this morning. bob, police were out there all night long investigating. do we know what they uncovered? >> reporter: we're getting a better idea of what led up to this shooting. good morning to you. as you can see behind me, the scene here is now clear, but we have been speaking with a man who witnessed at least part of the shooting last night. he said that he saw a white car that stopped here at this street corner around 10:00 last night. he heard about three gunshots from inside that car, and then a horrible sight as a woman exited the vehicle with at least one gunshot wound to her chest. a man and ott woman with a baby also came out to help the victim. the woman with the baby was screaming, identifying who pulled the trigger, which we're not going to do since the police have yet to make an arrest. the victim according to police was a 34-year-old woman from the sacramento area. she was declared dead on the scene. the driver of that car did stick around for a little bit after the shooting. then drov

bob redell is live at police headquarters. should we be concerned that the suspect was able to get away? >> reporter: good morning, kris and scott. law enforcement tells us they'll do a security audit to figure out how the man suspected of murder was able to escape from the county jail. this happened around 8:45 yesterday morning. this man was in a holding cell. somehow he got free. he scaled one of the fences back there. made it into the parking lot. at the same time san jose police chief larry esquivel happened to be pulling in and saw the guy sprinting through the parking lot, his handcuffed hands in front of him. he knew it wasn't right and tried to tackle him. remember this man withes going at full speed. they collided. first tackle was no good. the man got out and made the turn on mission to go towards the guadeloupe. the chief was hot on his heels. the tackle the second time was the charm. the chief took him down and arrested the suspect. something the escapee should have known about the chief, he was a standout line ba

. >> bob redell is tracking this story. >> reporter: people died at sfo. remarkably no fatalities in this morning's accident in japan. at least 20 people were hurt though. minor injuries when flight 162 went off the runway after landing in hiroshima. official a the transport ministry tells us the airbus 320 might have clipped an airport antenna. it spun 180 degrees and went off the runway. it appearers the aircraft is resting on its belly, suggesting a collapse of the landing gear. the airport was shut down. there were 74 passengers, seven crew on board. everyone evacuated safely. no serious injuries. unlike what happened at sfo in july of 2013. asiana flight 214, a boeing triple 7 clipped the seawall as it tried to land. crashed on the runway and caught fire. three teenage girls from china were killed. you might recall that one of the girls was accidentally run over by a fire truck as she lay injured outside the fuselage. over 180 passengers were hurt. 12 critically. the ntsb blamed the crash an pilot error that both men in the cockpit were unaware the au
