"today in the bay's" bob redell is live at valley medical center where that girl is recovering. d, bob, the strange thing about this the driver was nowhere to be found? >> according to chp you are correct, laura. yes, here at valley med that 15-year-old girl who chp, suffers major injuries is being treated after this car crash that happened overnight. this was west of saratoga in the santa cruz mountains on highway 9. just north of redwood gulch road. there were three people in this car. you had the 15-year-old girl, a 19-year-old woman, and then the 29-year-old man, the driver. it was around 1:15. chp not sure what led up to this crash. if the car lost control or what the circumstances were. but that car did go off the road down what looks like a 30-foot cliff. ended up on its side. smashed into a tree. if 15-year-old badly hurt. 19-year-old woman was killed on the scene. and as we mentioned, chp officers tell us they did try to find the driver. they did a thorough search. still have not found him raising the possibility that he might have fled the scene. as you mentioned, that

bob redell is in the area because, bob, it was a deadly crash. you have and what did you learn? >> reporter: good morning, mike. within the past 45 minutes chp and the auto wreckers have removed the vehicles from the two right lanes of northbound 880. just before industrial boulevard, which is that overpass there in the foreground of our live shot. if you can see the lights there, those yellow lights, that is one of the vehicles that was involved in this crash. this accident happened just before 2:00 this morning. a box truck was heading northbound when it slammed into the back side of a disabled big rig. there were three men in the cab of that box truck. sadly, one of those men died. the other two taken to the hospital with major injuries. and then the driver of the big rig slams his head into his windshield. he was also hurt and had to be taken to the hospital. so you have one person dead, two people in major injuries. the driver of the big rig taken to the hospital. his condition, unknown. but again, as far as the morning commute is concerned,

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live. bob, this is the second incident in just a matter of weeks. >> unfortunately you are correct. good morning, sam and laura. we're here in meridian near dry creek. this is one of the newly planted tree. over 24 hours ago someone took an electric saw and cut through this stump. if you go down they did the same to this new tree and it's hard to see in the dark but there are 23 of these trees total here along this stretch of meridian that someone came, they believe wednesday night, early yesterday morning, some time in the middle of the night with that electric saw and cut down the trees. it's something they did similarly across the street to a 23 other trees. this was probably about three to four weeks ago. we talked with councilman this morning, he represents this district in the willow glen district of san jose. it was he who along with our city forest environmental group helped plant these trees about a year ago to beautify this area as part of a $50,000 project, broader project. money

"today in the bay's" bob redell is there live. what's happening right now, bob? >> well, within the past minute, two minutes, laura, we saw somebody lift up the blinds of that window here in this apartment building here on miramar and ocean. they lifted it up and then quickly shut the blinds. we didn't get a look as far as who that person was but you can see sfpd has lit up that window the which is on the third floor of this apartment building in ingleside district. this is where a man has barricaded himself since 1:30 yesterday afternoon. now, one reason police are being so cautious. they believe this man is armed with some sort of weapon, not clear if that's a gun, knife, or something else. they were trying to arrest him for a crime he committed earlier yesterday. pd won't say what it was. the man did allude officers. ran into a -- police believe he is in building. s that s.w.a.t. truck, patrol vehicles as well. they have the building surrounded, the entrance, that is. a negotiator has tried to coax that man out with no luck so far. and there is no indication w

"today in the bay's" bob redell has been following this story. bob, while the lanes are clear, the investigation is just beginning. >> reporter: it is. good rn morning to you, laura. one of the vehicles involved in this early morning crash. still off to the shoulder of northbound 880 just before industrial boulevard. you can see the overpass right there in the foreground. the yellow lights of that semi are one of the vehicles that were involved in this crash. it took place just before 2:00 this morning. there was a box truck which has since been moved from the scene. three men in that box truck heading north when they slammed in the back of this big rig that was stalled on the right side of the interstate. unfortunately one of the men in that box truck was killed on the scene. two others taken to the hospital with what has been described as major injuries. and then you have the driver of the big rig who was in his cab and his head smashed in his windshie windshield. he, too, was also taken to the hospital. his condition unknown. horrific accident

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is joining us live from the santa clara county main jail where detail thons latest case of inmate abuse. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you, sam and laura. what makes this case unusual that the district attorney's office initially passed on pressing charges against this former deputy here at the santa clara main jail, but yesterday the d.a. came to a different conclusion and had -- filed charges against timmy tree, had him arrested at his east san jose home and placed him in the very jail that he used to work. he faces charges related to the beating of an inmate in october 2013 while he was a correctional officer here. tree allegedly kicked an inmate h nis head and face, cutting his face and breaking his jaw. sources close to the investigation tell us tree was trying to help a fellow officer subdue the inmate who had become unruly. the sources say that in the process tree used force that was considered excessive. >> it went through internal investigation. he has not worked for the sheriff's office since then. he was immediately put on adm adminis

here at levi stadium in san diego, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> we are learning of an attempted escape at elmwood jail this weekend. you can see the sandal left on the barbed fence as he was trying to jump over it sunday afternoon. sources told nbc bay area that inmate made it over the first line but was arrested before he could make it over the second fence that surround the perimeter of elmwood. the sheriff's office hasn't identified the inmate but newly installed cameras captured the attempted escape. cameras were only installed after nbc bay area reported a lack of cameras around the perimeter. >> officials are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in a san francisco neighborhood. we brought you this as live breaking news on today in the bay. this is a building under development between 5th and 6th street. the fire started before 5:00 this morning and it took firefighters an hour and half to get it under control. because the building was vacant, no one was displaced or injured but it could effect the long-term affordable housing prospect there. sf gate said this is one of

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live along meridian avenue and dry creek road. bob, there's now a reward to find the person responsible. >> the people here at willow glen as you can imagine are pretty upset. would like to know is take an electric saw and cutting down these newly planted tree. not just one tree, not two, but 22 trees along this quarter mile stretch of meridianen and dry creek in willow glen. we will have more on that in a minute but we believe these are chinese fringe trees planted just over about a year ago. it was either wednesday night or early thursday morning that someone took electric saw to these, cutting them in the middle, cutting them in a way where, as you can see, they will never grow back. it was a month ago someone cut down 23 other newly planted trees across the street from where we're standing right now. that's a total of 46 trees wasted. damage estimated at around $10,000. never mind the hundreds of volunteer hours it took to plant these. we spoke this morning with san jose city councilman. he represents this district. he expresse

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live with more on the latest incident. b, police say a man was brutally beaten up in one of the mall bathrooms. >> correct, sam, this happened on friday when three men beat and robbed a 20-year-old man inside one of the rest rooms at the westfield shopping center here in downtown san francisco behind me. this was just two days after frank galcia was murder we at the mall. you might call on wednesday morning 28-year-old man, a chef at a high end restaurant here in union square, was found dead last wednesday morning in a stairwell inside bloomingdale's. that opened up to an alley way on the back side of the mall. we spoke with frank's brother luis in town to bring his brother's body back to los angeles for burial. he tells us his family is in the dark about the circumstances surrounding his brother's death. giving it the mall has several security cameras, luis thinks there's most likely video evidence that would explain what happened but so far police aren't saying much to him or his family. >> we're almost at a week and it's
