nbc bay area bob redell is live at the facility near sfo. what is the latest, bob? >> reporter: you could see behind me that fire is out, has been out for a couple of hours now. but anybody driving up 101 across the bay bridge, 880 had to think what is going on at sfo. did an airplane crash. you could see why. this is what it looked like around 7:15, 7:30 this morning. it created a plume of smoke and the san francisco fire department tweeted out this was not an airplane crash. this two-alarm fire started in a heating, hvac unit. the fire department had it out in about an hour. alarms did go off the building and united said all of the employees evacuated. no one was hurt. we spoke to one mechanic who said the evacuation was calm and orderly. >> everybody was looking at the smoke and not evacuating. and that is something that we all know. you're supposed to evacuate right away and not be looky-looing and all of that. >> some if not all of the employees have returned to work. operation at airport was not impacted, the terminals remain opened and flights took off and la

bob redell is there. how are they going with the new gates? >> for the last month, richmond has been installing the double stacked fare gates, and it is to stop some from jumping over the top. this is yesterday when our cameras captured the teenagers sneaking through the new gates at richmond bart. when police detained them the situation became violent and one of the young women faces charges of battery on a police officer. bart finds itself in a tough situation. they are trying to stop fare evasion. it costs the agency $25 million a year in lost revenue, but not all riders are fond of the double stacked fare gates, especially riders in wheelchairs. >> there's not enough time there for me to always get through. >> they are horrible. look where they would hit somebody, a child, somebody in a wheelchair or a short person, somebody is going to get badly hurt by these things. >> we understand the concerns, but we are encouraged by the fact nobody has been injured by the gates. >> reporter: here's the other version of the fare gate being installed
