today in the bay's bob redell live in lafayette this morning right in the center of town. bob, did everybody make it out okay? >> reporter: yes, apparently nobody was inside at the time. the woman that owns this business was outside, saw the fire start and flagged somebody down and they were able to call 911. you can see the issue we are talking about. look in the front left window there. you can see this building is packed with stuff. that's the way the battalion chief described it to me. he said it's like a hoarder. you can see in the video there was a lot to burn. the fire really got going. the chief did send in some of his firefighters at the start but because it was too dangerous with all the stuff inside he pulled them out and fought the fire from the outside. this fire started just after midnight, and it's just off mt. diablo boulevard, the main drag in lafayette. it looks like a two-story home but this is a business. i spoke with the ex-husband of the woman that runs the business, and she helps to facilitate shipments in and out of the country. the fire chief did ca

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from the east bay this morning. let's talk about the latest polls and what they indicate, bob. >> well, they indicate that governor newsom should survive the recall vote and keep his job. good morning, laura. take a look at your tv screen. this is the latest tracking from uc berkeley. this survey of people finds that of those people that surveyed, 60% say that newsom should stay in office. that would be a no on the recall vote. 38% want him removed. that would be a "yes." the rest, less than 2%, are undecided. republican leaders are confident that the recall will go their way, in spite of the polling. but they do say if newsom holds on to his seat, they worry about the power that he could use after election day. >> my concern is that he is going to continue to abuse it even further, and maybe even find a way, a novel way of forcing mandates. maybe not so much the factor where he makes it so onerous to not get the vaccine, that people are effectively compelled to get it. the governor's campaign push will include a cam

. >> nbc bay area's bob redell is live near the scene. what are the witnesses saying that make it seem so suspicious? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kris and marcus. before we get to the witnesses, within the past few minutes i heard from the fire department, and they told us that there was evidence a homeless encampment here, that their investigator did find evidence of that. even though they don't know the exact cause of the fire, they do believe it was caused by human activity. they just don't know how it started. you can also see by looking at these palm trees just how hot this fire was. and you can get a sense of how scared people were. if you look down this pathway in antioch, you can see how close the fire came to the homes. and the vegetation here is really dry because of the drought. you can see the fire took off and burned through those palm trees and spread through the neighborhood and caused extensive damage to two homes. a woman living on the house on g street, she was able to get out okay. though last time we spoke

nbc bay area's bob redell live in lafayette, and the guard saved lives, bob. >> correct. good morning to you, scott. we spoke with the mother whose kids sadly witnessed this collision that took place right here in the road in front of me here at stanley middle school. there's a memorial that parents and kids and teachers have been setting up for this man. this mother says the crossing guard pushed kids out of the way from the incoming suv, jumped in front of the vehicle and in her hands literally risked his life to save those kids in that moment. now this was the scene a few hours ago. you can see a lafayette police officer, the school superintendent and others man the crosswalks as kids return to school the day after this horrific accident that unfortunately, as i mention the, several parents and children witnessed. students, moms and dead left flowers. many people hugged each other and cried this morning. extra counselors are on site to help the kids cope. this collision happened a little bit before 3:00 yesterday afternoon. this was just as school was letting out. the

nbc bay area's bob redell has this report from union city. >> reporter: as you can see behind me, workers with union city, they're spiffing up, they're readying the flight 93 memorial here in union city for a special ceremony that'll take place here tomorrow to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country. it was september 11th of 2001 that united air flight 93 left newark, new jersey, was supposed to land at sfo with 33 passengers, seven crew members, plus those four terrorist hijackers. sadly that flight never made it. it crashed in a field in pennsylvania. one of the passengers mark bing ham was traveling from his new york office to his san francisco office on the day of the attacks. he was among the passengers who fought back against those hijackers who had intended to divert the plane to washington d.c. but because of his bravery and the bravery of many others on flight 93, that plane went down in a field just outside shanksville, pennsylvania. everyone on board including the four hijackers were killed. bingham has been recognized by the lgbtq community fo

area's largest counties may soon be required to be vaccinated for covid. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell, this would be a first for the bay area. >> correct. contra costa county where we are will be the first county to make such a recommendation if this does, in fact, happen. the recommendation being that all students in the county 12 and up be fully vaccinated when they go to school. county supervisor tells the east bay times that the health department is considering making this recommendation and it would be up to the local school boards to adopt and implement that. two of the largest school districts are considering a vaccine mandate for students 12 and up. west contra costa county unified has not set a date to vote on it. oakland's unified which is in alameda tells us they could bring it up for a vote as soon as next week. >> what's going to help to our students that don't want to get the vaccine. >> implementation and timeline and extensions there will be, those are questions i want to hear from my colleagues. >> staff and teachers would also have to be fully vaccinated. the consequ

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in the east bay this morning. bob, talk a little bit about the most recent polls out there. what do they show? >> good morning to you, laura. you will recall at the beginning of the election cycle governor newsom did have weak support according to the polling, but recent polling shows that he should survive this effort to remove him. take a look at your tv screen tracking from uc berkeley that shows 60% of people surveyed say he should stay in office. that means they would be voting no on the recall. 38% want him removed. that would be a yes vote. the rest 1% undecided. also should be noted democrats outnumber republicans two to one in the state of california, which is seen as giving newsom the upper hand. now the governor's final pushing push campaigning today will include a campaign swing by president joe biden who will fly to long beach, california, to rally with newsom tonight. voters who choose to recall newsom must choose among the list of 46 replacements. the man leading the list is larry elder, a conservati
