bob redell joins us live outside that school and bob, what is the school doing to make the students feel> they would have counselors at skyline high school this morning and throughout the rest of the day. for students and staff who want to talk about tuesday's shooting who by the way, no one was hurt, but it was a frightening experience for a number of the people who were here, and this is video from outside the school earlier this morning where you can see oakland police assigned an officer in a squad car to stay on campus and monitor the students as they arrived for class this morning. that officer, by the way, left campus at 9:45 this morning after classes had begun. a couple of parents yelled at us as they drove by to say they thought the school needs to do more to protect their children. some parents have suggested metal detectors and this was the scene here at skyline on late tuesday morning. there was that large police response. the school was put on lockdown after someone fired a gun on campus. students tell us the shooting happened near the theater in between classes and it was

bob redell has a preview of what could happen on decisions to ban certain flags, including a symbol of pride. >> reporter: later this afternoon, the sunol glen school district will hold a special governoring board meeting, not clear if it's related to their decision last week to ban the gay pride flag at the sunol glen school, but it is possible some parents might rally at or outside this meeting. last tuesday, the sunol glen board passed a resolution 2-1 saying the school can only fly the flags for the united states and the state of california. the issue originally arose in june when they flew a pride flag in celebration of pride month. the school superintendent found the board's decision last week disturbing, says that 90% of her staff supports flying the flag. now, parents are pushing to recall two school board trustees who voted to disallow the flying of the flag. one of those board members, linda hurley, released a statement last week explaining her decision. bob redell is live for us with an update from caltrans. is the road going to reopen for tomorrow's post-labor day commute? >> reporter: according to caltrans, yes, it is. good morning to you, kris. i did speak with caltrans a couple of hours ago, and they tell us that westbound 80 that is shut down right now at 780 and vallejo to carquinez behind me to highway 4 in hercules will reopen at 5:00 tuesday morning in time for workers trying to get back to sf for their jobs after this long labor day holiday weekend. this is new video this morning of the roughly three-mile stretch of westbound 80 that was shut down. workers right now, they're waiting for the concrete to finish curing, but you can see the concrete is poured, and then they will restripe the roads. thursday night workers took out the old road all the way down to the dirt, according to caltrans, and installed new rebar, concrete, and asphalt. caltrans says this facelift will add 40 years to the life span of this stretch of westbound 80. the state chose to shut down the road over labo

"today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live this morning. eport finds former police chief leronne armstrong should have never been fired. >> reporter: correct. this is according, laura, to a 57-page report by an independent arbitrator who was commissioned by the city, and this report that we learned about yesterday recommends that the discipline imposed on former oakland police chief leronne armstrong should be reversed and removed from his personnel record. you might recall that mayor sheng thao fired armstrong in february after an independent investigation claimed armstrong mishandled cases involving a sergeant who hit a parked car in a garage. but yesterday's report says the investigation was inaccurate and that internal affairs presented the parked car incident as an accident instead of hit-and-run. they suggest the city considers reinstating armstrong. the city says it will consider armstrong for a short list. a spokesperson for armstrong tells us his attorneys have reached out to city officials about possible reinstatement. if that does

snaim's bob redell is live for us this morning in newark. rk is one of those places that will be receiving the funds. talk to us about this, bob, across the state, this is a huge boost. >> reporter: that's the idea, good morning to you, marcus and ginger, yes, the state of california will be awarding $267 million to in the words of the governor's office combat organized retail crime. now, that money will go to the newark police department behind me and 54 other police sheriff and district attorney offices throughout the state. and this is so they can hire more officers, create task forces, and develop investigative units. for example, we know san francisco, another city here obviously in the bay area, is set to receive $17 million. one city that could definitely use that money, but won't be receiving a dime, as you mentioned, oakland, the city missed the deadline to submit an application to receive what we believe would have been millions of dollars from the state. the city administrator's office released this statement explaining what happen

. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us from the newsroom this morning.illions of dollars. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you. the question is how to use that money to stop or minimize the number of overdoses from fentanyl in santa clara county. those overdoses, by the way, have killed 105 people, sadly, so far this year. in a few hours the board of supervisors will vote on how to spend roughly $19 million to combat this crisis. $11 million is from a cdc grant, the rest from a national opioid settlement. one proposal is to use the money to put narcan into bars and restaurants. narcan is a drug that can reverse the effects of a fentanyl overdose. the county may also consider funding a mobile unit to distribute narcan throughout the south bay and at concert venues. supervisor cindy chavez says they need to spend some of the money on treating drug addiction. >> we want to make sure we're investing resources in the ability for people to get services as quickly as possible, so that if you know you have an addiction, that you're able to get as close to s
