nbc bay area's bob redell joins us from the bay area. the two sides are talking about a lease extension. >> reporter: correct, chris. i did just hear back from the oakland a's within the past hour who did issue a short, brief, to the point statement. we will put it up on your screen here. they say we appreciate oakland's engagement and also we are far apart on the terms needed to agree on an extension. we're talking about an extension of lease of the coliseum. we're waiting to hear back from the city of oakland. we know both sides are supposed to meet today about a possible five-year lease extension on the coliseum. the a's lease is expiring this season, but they will need a place to play until 2028 when the team will eventually move to las vegas. you are looking at a video of a recent game in the stadium where a few fans are showing up in response to the team's move out of oakland. the city proposed this five-year, $97 million lease extension. the team would be able to opt out of the deal in 2028 after three years, but would still owe t

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from concord. and bob, do we have an idea on the cause of this fire yet? not yet. the contra costa county fire protection district says they are still investigating or going to be investigating this fire that burned, as you can hear behind me, near concord. bart station, you can see firefighters are still out here. they've been out here for well over 12 hours and until about five, ten minutes ago, they were still dumping water on this building. as you mentioned, the fire is out, but they are on the scene to make sure there's nothing in there that is still hot. that could flare back up. this is video from khan fire overnight. it shows you just how big and dangerous this fire was when the firefighters arrived around 1030 last night. this was a vacant three story commercial building, not far from concord, bart. as i mentioned, it is bordered by three streets east sunset and clayton and it is, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. according to khan fire, who we spoke to earlier. this is video taken b

. >> nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live from orinda. i know the mayor of orinda also now stepping in with some comments. >> reporter: correct. good morning, marcus and laura. mayor of orinda, darlene yee, she has sent a letter to governor newsom and other state leaders asking them to intervene in what she calls a, quote, insurance non-renewal crisis in her city. according to a filing with the state, state farm, the state's largest insurer, will not be renewing more than half the homeowner policies in the 94563 zip code here in orinda. we're talking about just over 1700 policies here. that's the most of any zip code in the state. as you can see on this map we put together for you, in the 94549 zip code in neighboring lafayette almost 1,000 state farm customers will lose coverage. the zip code in santa clara and santa cruz customers will see 1,000 customers off the rolls. and over 1400 customers in two zip codes in santa rosa and the immediate vicinity. we spoke to i astate farm customer who lives in san mateo but was visiting her daughte

let's check in with today in the bay's bob redell. he's been near the scene all morning long. what's the latest up there, bob? >> reporter: unfortunately, laura and marcus, this connector to southbound 880 will be shut down in the morning commute. you can see the backup this has been causing. will continue to cause for a number of hours, according to chp. your headlights are heading westbound on northbound 238. some of the drivers are trying to get to southbound 880. they are being diverted. you see why. the chp and the caltrans trucks blocking the connector to southbound 880. you can see in the video, because of an overturned big rig. a few issues going on here. this big rig, fully loaded. tens of thousands of pounds of goods from a chinese good distributor. it's too heavy or the trailer is too damaged to upright it. they have to get another trailer out here to offload the goods. that will take time. there's the accordion-like structure that's up against the center divide, that absorbs impacts from collisions. that needs to be repaired. there's also motor oil on the road. that

. >> bob redell joins us from oakland international. a lot of travelers are still going to be dealing with the residual delays. how bad is it out there? >> reporter: fortunately, not bad at all. oakland international says they only had four theys, two outbound, two inbound, and those delays were 30 to 40 minutes. no cancellations. there is one flight to hawaii that was delayed a couple of hours. sfo said they had five alaska airlines flights that were delayed on departure. the faa ordered the ground stop for alaska and horizon air at 7:30 this morning because of that computer issue. the problem was fixed, and the ground stop lifted at around 8:30, so it only lasted about an hour. we spoke with one hour whose flight back home to seattle was delayed by roughly half an hour. >> i have no problem. you guys handle things seamlessly, so it doesn't bother me to fly. i was delayed a couple of hours coming down, and i figured it was worth it. >> reporter: by the way, when she was referring to "you," she was referring to people at the airlines, n

we have bob redell, live where we saw that scene there. you have been following and watching closely as those officers release many of the demonstrators that are out there for us this morning or out there this morning. talk about what's happening now. a few of the lanes have been reopened. >> one lane of northbound 880 has been reopened. it's the left shoulder that's been reopened. it has been reopened since, you know, early 10:00 hour, so almost an hour. this is south of the embarcadero 5th avenue exit. you have three oil barrels still in the middle of the road, and you've got at least three protesters attached to the barrels. when i say attached, they've got their arms in the barrels. the protesters sent an email. 280 pounds of concrete in each barrel. it's not clear how the arms are still inside, if they're latched onto something or encased, but you can't get the protesters out without cutting through the barrels with metal grinders and saws and using the jackhammer that chp is uing now. they have the brown tarp. the protesters in the f

bob redell is joining us live from the east bay. >> bob, today the a's will try to extent the current lease at the oakland coliseum, too, right? >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you, kris and marcus. yes, later today the a's leadership will meet with the city of oakland to discuss a lease extension at the coliseum. now, that lease expires after this season, but they're not moving to las vegas until 2028, so they need a place to play in the meantime, so this is one of those options. you're looking at video of a recent game at the coliseum where you can see few fans are showing up, and this is in response to the team's imminent move out of oakland. the city has proposed a five-year $97 million lease extension. the team, the a's, would be able to opt out in 2028 after three years, but would still owe the city the full amount of the contract. but with little fan support so far this season, a former a's executive we spoke with believes the team should look elsewhere. >> if you're going to extend that lease for three years, four years, or five years in a ghost town, that is one

. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live for us in livermore this morning. bob, what can we expect if this bill becomes law? >> reporter: good morning. it's not clear what impact, if any, this bill would have on what we pay for homeowners insurance here in the state of california. state senator josh becker is a democrat out of menlo park, and he has put forth this bill which would force home insurers like state farm and others here in the state to take into consideration the billions of dollars that the state has spent on wildfire mitigation and all the work homeowners have done to protect their homes from wildfires, like creating defensible space around the property. becker says the insurance companies are not taking those facts into consideration when calculating coverage and the cost to home buyers. sb-1060 would require this. the bill would not require the insurers to pass on any sort of discount, just that they consider the work that has been done to better protect property. the american property casualty insurance association, which represents insurance

bob redell joins us where the mayor is stepping in. >> reporter: the mayor is asking the governor ofrnia, the insurance commissioner and other state leaders to intervene on what she calls an insurance non-renewal crisis here in her town. according to a filing with the state, state farm will not be renewing more than half the homeowner policies in the 94563 zip code. that's just over 1,700 policies, the most of any zip code in california. as you can see, in the 94549 zip code, in neighboring lafayette, almost 1,000 customers there will lose coverage. 95033 zip code in santa clara and santa cruz will see over 1,000 customers off state farm rolls. we spoke to a customer who livers in san mateo. >> so far, so good. we live in a wooded area. >> reporter: have you gotten any indication they might cut you? >> i haven't. my daughter is over here. i'm concerned she won't -- they might contact her. >> reporter: is she state farm here? >> yes. that's a concern. >> people had their insurance canceled. >> reporter: what are they doing? >> i guess the state has a fair plan or maybe another insurer

reporting live here in dublin, bob redell today in the bay. thanks a lot bob. very interesting stuff there. excuse me, it is 507 for you this morning. a south bay deputy is recovering. this is after a crash in a high speed chase which also injured four innocent people. this happened yesterday on commodore drive and king road in san jose. that's where a patrol car struck an suv. now all four passengers and the deputy suffered non-life threatening injuries. the whole incident started when deputies say that they actually tried to pull over that speeding car, and the suspect took off. at one point, he also rammed a patrol car, then later slowed his car with speed strip speed strips and soon after arrested him. now the face he faces, that person in that car faces multiple charges, including driving a stolen vehicle. and happening today, south bay leaders will join the salvation army to unveil a new housing project. the nonprofit will renovate the emmanuel house overnight shelter on fourth street and build another housing complex on the same site. earlier this month,

. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us live from the east bay.otections are we talking about legislators are considering? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. they are considering measures that would include more oversight and accountabilities for companies that own and operate those driverless cars, namely robotaxi companies, as well as consequences for when the driverless cars make mistakes. a live look at the state capitol in sacramento where the assembly transportation committee will discuss this proposed bill. assembly member phil teng is behind it. if it's enacted into law, it would allow law enforcement to cite robotaxi companies for driving violations. they would have to set up a dedicated phone number for first responders to call in the case of an incident or emergency. as well as require vehicles to be geofenced, which would require the company to submit quarterly reports to the state about miles traveled and the number of times the vehicle stopped on a public right-of-way. it would provide reports every five days.

bob redell has more. >> reporter: we are trying to confirm. to discuss the possibility of the team playing at sutter health park. it's the aaa home of the rivercats. the move there would cost the team $67 million in annual broadcast revenue. also, sutter health is a smaller stadium where the a's play. as you can see, the a's can't even fill that right now. attendance at the coliseum has been horrible as fans stay away from the a's because they are upset over the impending move to las vegas. the a's lease at the coliseum expires at the end of the baseball season. the team is looking for a temporary home until 2028 when construction of the new $1.5 billion stadium is supposed to be completed on the las vegas strip. yesterday, the a's met with oakland to negotiate a new lease extension there at the coliseum. it doesn't appear those talks were productive. the a's said they were far apart on terms needed to agree on an extension. the city is asking for $97 million in rent over five years. the a's could leave after three but would have to pay the $9

nbc bay area's bob redell has the details. d final closure of southbound 680 behind me here in pleasanton. caltrans will be shutting down this section of road starting tonight at 9:00. we are talking about south bound 680 starting at the dublin interchange. 580 all the way down to highway 84. here's a map that we put together for you so you can better visualize this section of the road that we're talking about. we are talking about a nine mile stretch of southbound 680 starting at the dublin interchange, as i mentioned, all the way south to highway 84, which is your connector to livermore, the onramp ramps for southbound stoneridge drive, bernal avenue, and sunol boulevard will be closed as well. the closure again to start tonight at 9:00, reopening by 4 a.m. monday morning in time for the morning commute. you can see in this video why this part of southbound 680 needs work. there are potholes and parts of the road that are uneven and deteriorated. this was originally scheduled for a couple of weekends ago, but was delayed beca
