bob riddell live with a look at the damage and cleanup now under way. bob, good morning. >> good morning. not much in the way of damage near the intersection of philbert and mason. the water company, you can see, has been able to dramatically decrease the pressure of the water main break. it's a gurgle now if you will, not like earlier when this break happened around 2:50 in the morning. it was ankle deep in this intersection. the water department wants to have water still coming out so when they start digging up the ground here at fill bert and mason they can see where the water is coming from. they believe it's a six-inch water line made of cast iron. with we are talking to oh the water department. one of three things that could have burst the line. they don't know. they will probably get a good idea. one of three things. the ground shifts, old age or weather. it has been cold. they don't know right now. in the meantime there will be two blocks that will be without water. that could be for several hours. >> got up at 2:20 as i do every day to go to wor

bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> breaking news out of pittsburgh. a pittsburgh police officer was shot during an overnight chase. officers are there fanning out along the intersection of 11th and maple where the shootings happened. kristy smith has details. what can you tell us. >> reporter: the officer has been taken to the hospital, treated and released. pittsburgh police say the whole thing happened very fast. two officers tried to approach a dangerous suspect standing in front of a house on the street near 11th and maple. he took off running and officers chased him around 1 is 1:30 last night. they say all of the sudden the suspect turned around and opened fire on the police officers. the lieutenant says he hit one of the officers but somehow both of the officers were able to fire back at him. they shot the suspect. a 30-year-old, from okayley. >> our suspect is a 30-year-old resident with an extensive criminal history for weapons and drug charges. he was wanted on several warrants for the same charges. >> reporter: he suffered nonlife threateni

we start with bob riddell live with details on what we have learned overnight. bob, good morning. >> reporter: finally left the scene more than 12 hours after the shooting. police will update us around 11:30 with a news conference to update us on what happened here yesterday. a day that the santa cruz police chief says is the darkest day in the history of the police department. this is the first time the department lost officers in the line of duty. elizabeth butler, a detective, ten years with the department leaves behind her partner peter and two young boys. both are following up with the suspect around 33oh!3 yesterd:3. the follow up was in regard to the arrest for allegedly breaking into a co-worker's home making inappropriate sexual advances toward her. at some point yesterday he shot and killed both officers. as you can see in this cell phone video, law enforcement swarmed the area. goulet tried to escape. you can hear officers and deputies unloading weapon withes. one witness said it sounded like the fourth of july. there were so many shots fired. the 35-y

today in the bay's bob riddell live at santa cruz police headquarters where that memorial for the officerss now being planned. bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, terry. yes, if there was a measure of the outpouring of love and support from the community, you can see it in the number of flowers and candles that continue to crowd the entrance here to santa cruz police headquarters. today pd will be going back on the streets, resuming their normal duties. they had a little break after what happened tuesday afternoon with the santa cruz county sheriff's office covering their patrols and answering calls on their behalf. last night the community joined the department in a vigil to mourn the losses of officers elizabeth butler and warren baker. some took time to write letters of support for the families. new details about the suspect. just after he shot and killed the two officers, he texted his twin brother, "i'm in big trouble, i love you." law enforcement cornered him a short time later. as you can hear in this exclusive cell phone video, they fired many rounds at him, hitting and killing

bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> happening now, day two of the bond hearing for oscar pistorius wrapping up in a south african courtroom. a day filled with more tears and deet about the valentine's day shooting that killed his girlfriend. the prosecution now pushing for premeditated murder while the defense said it was a mistake. marla has the details. we're hearing the prosecution started the day with a witness statement. >> that's right. as you mentioned we are just learning the bail hearing is wrapping up now without a decision from the magistrate so pistorius will spend another night in jail. the hearing resumes tomorrow. it lasted more than six hours today. the prosecution brought forward a witness who says they heard a woman screaming at pistorius's home, gunshots and more screaming. they heard it in the early morning hours of february 14 when reeva was killed. they say they were 600 meters away when they heard it. that's almost a half mile. the prosecution showed a floor plan of the home to undermine the runner's account of what happened that morning. also the prosecution trying t

bob riddell has details on what schools and police are trying to do to keep students safe now. good morning. >> good morning to you. the redwood city police department announcing it is now working hand in hand with the school district to make campuses on the peninsula safer and better prepared if a shooter works to attack. as part of the plan, police are now encouraging the patrol officers to essentially adopt an elementary school asking officers to visit the elementary school in their zone on a daily basis so they can become familiar with teachers and students and lay out of the campus. they want to review security procedures to make sure the campus is best prepared at keeping a gunman from entering school grounds. it is the only campus with a full time officer. the middle schools have part timerses. educators like teachers, staff, administrators will be educated how to handle an active shooter situation. the schools are formulating a more comprehensive emergency response plan. in august or september, the police and the district plan to conduct a full scale drill on campus. it

bob riddell joins us live. this case has a long history. >> reporter: yeah. nine years in the making as you mentioned earlier. good morning. around 9:00 this morning barry bonds and his attorneys will ask the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals in san francisco, a panel of three judges, to overturn his 2011 felony conviction of obstruction of justice investigating the illegal investigation of performance-enhancing drugs. bond gave a rambling answer when asked if his personal trainer had given him anything to inject himself with. the former giants slugger was trying to mislead the grand jury with the rambling answer so they convicted him on the obstruction charge. bonds lawyers will argue that his answer may have been unresponsive but it was truthful. even though he told the truth his answer was still immaterial to the grand jury investigation. it didn't have bearing on the findings. legal analysts tell the associated press it's hard to get a verdict over turned in federal court. in this situation there is a lot of respect for a judge who oversaw bonds's perju

bob riddell is live with how long the crew says it will take. >> reporter: good morning. filbert and mason in north beach. the intersection is open. water has been restored. the only issue is the cable car line because of the debris gushing out from the ground earlier. they are concerned some of it could be stuck in the slots here that run the cable. so they have shut down the lines. they're doing shuttle buses and are waiting for someone to double check the slots. make sure there is no debris in there. if you look to your left where the post office box is, the line is under there. that's where the water was gushing out. you can see what it looked like several hours ago around 2:15 this morning. so much water gushing out into this intersection was ankle deep at one point. lots of gravel, concrete chunks. they think they will get it fixed as far as the line is concerned this morning, early afternoon. now they are waiting on the utilities to come out like gas, cable so when the water company starts digging they don't break anything. >> i got up at 2:20 to go to work. went i

reporting live in santa cruz, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> nbc bay area news uncovered the suspecte shooting does, in fact, have a history of run-ins with the law. he lived in berkeley for a short time. that's where "today in the bay's" kristy smith is live with more on the background. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. neighbors in berkeley are speaking out. some call him creepy. others say he seemed to argue a lot with with people he shared his apartment with. they say he moved here in 2011 and suddenly moved away. the man who lives below them says he and his wife moved out after studying a conviction in oregon after doing research. they say the 35-year-old worked at a coffee shop in this parking lot in berkeley but he lost his job and then moved away. reportedly in 2008 goulet was found guilty of peeping at a woman in portland as she showered. when the boyfriend tried to help out goulet fired a handgun in the struggle. he was convicted of carrying a gun without a permit in 2008. last friday the sentinel says goulet was arrested by policer for disorderly conduct. an employe
