anyway, go ahead, bob. >> schieffer: why? >> well, i mean he's defending a president, i mean, initially you talked about gas prices. he's defending a president that where gas prices were $1.85 a gallon when he took over. he defends the president's position. when the president's own energy czar said-- and this is undisputed-- that he wanted gas prices to go to european levels. so we could all be forced... >> schieffer: when was this? >> uh... years ago. so we could be forced to drive, you know, battery-operated cars and scooters around. he's back-pedaled on that statement. but very quickly, the obama administration's finding itself in a whole lot of trouble because once again we've got a president who says one thing and then he does another. in any event, i think that when it comes to gas prices, this president has taken our country completely backwards. this idea that david axelrod is spinning that now we've got record production, we've got record production because of the actions of george w. bush and bill clinton years ago.

in fact, there's bob schieffer up in new york talking with us or should i say right here in washington. what's your gut say, bob, about the fate of the healthcare bill? >> well, i kind of go along with joe biden. i don't think you can take from the oral arguments, make really a good judgment on what they're going to do because oftentimes they will play the devil's advocate, but having said that, it was hard to come way from those oral arguments believing -- come away from those oral arguments believing that the conservatives on the court are going to go along with the key part of the plan which is to require people to buy health insurance. i will be surprised frankly if they don't throw it out, but we'll see what happens. >> we will indeed. maryland, d.c., wisconsin all hold primaries next tuesday. george h.w. bush endorses mitt romney this past week. isn't it over? shouldn't santorum and gingrich probably think about calling it? >> i don't think they will. i think they're going to hang around at least until pretty close to the convention because there is still the possibility that rom

bob schieffer has more. >> whatever else you can say about super tuesday, what it seems to underline is that this is a republican party that has not yet settled on who it wants to be its nominee. in fact, you could also argue that it is a party that really is just not very excited about any of the people who are in the race right now. for example, in virginia where mitt romney won, the only other person on the ballot was ron paul and ron paul got 40-something percent of the vote in virginia. that means, there are some 40 some odd percent of the people in virginia that are not happy about the idea of mitt romney being their candidate. in georgia and in tennessee where newt gingrich and where rick santorum won, 40% in both of those states said that mitt romney was simply not conservative enough for them. romney did win his home state, which is kind of a gimme. he won vermont, which is the neighboring state. this was a night when everybody got some wins. newt gingrich will go on now. he says he'll try to use his win in georgia to give him momentum into alabama and mississippi, which wil

for the republican nomination will be one of the key topics when newt gingrich and ron paul join bob schieffer this sunday on face the nation and bob joins me now with a preview. we talked about how disastrous it would be for mitt romney to lose michigan. he didn't lose, but did his narrow win leave perhaps a super tuesday window for your two guests to crawl through? >> i love that. i've never heard it quite that said way, derek, but that sounds pretty good to me. i tell you this. i think mitt romney is going to have as hard of time in ohio, which is one of the big prizes on tuesday, as he did in michigan. that thing out there, it's narrowing, but right now rick santorum has a just tiny bit of a lead. i think newt gingrich is looking pretty good in his homestate of georgia which will be another of the big prizes on super tuesday. he may win there. santorum is looking pretty good in tennessee. so i think the bottom line here is a lot of us maybe three months ago thought that this thing would be wrapped up on super tuesday. i think it's not going to be quite that super. i think this race is goin

bob schieffer, the anchor of "face the nation" the joining us, along with john dickerson, our political director in ohio. bob, what do you see in this super tuesday so far? >> i think if we were at the horse races we'd be feeling pretty good right now because we'd have a good chance to win the big six. everything is coming out the way the polls suggested they were going to come out. newt gingrich won georgia, he knew that was the only place he had any chance and he will continue and go on to fight for another day after winning down there. it looks like rick santorum, he's already won tennessee. he's leading in oklahoma so that will be a couple for him. romney has won what really amounts to kind of three gimmies-- virginia where only ron paul was on the ballot with him, vermont and massachusetts which, of course, is his home state. it would have been remarkable if he hadn't have won those states. it's coming down, though, now, on what happens in ohio and as far as we know it's still very, very close there between santorum and romney. >> pelley: it's going to be a split decision tonight.
