i'm bob schieffer. this is our western edition. well, there was a wild shoot-out 75 miles from brussels today and belgium police believe they may have prevented a terrorist attack similar to the one in paris. two heavily armed men were killed, another wounded. and there is a wide dragnet out for more people believed involved in the plot, which is thought to be aimed at police buildings. our charlie d'agata is in belgium. he has more. >> reporter: gunfire rang out as police raided a house in verviers and fire burned inside. the two men shot dead had terror links to syria. an injured man was arrested. police say the suspects were heavily armed with automatic weapons and opened fire first. ey eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions. police cordoned off the street as a bomb disposal team arrived. authorities say this was an active terror cell they've been monitoring for weeks when they realized an attack was imminent. they were reportedly plotting to attack police buildings on a grand scale, according to belgian authorities. the gunfi

joining us now is face the nation host bob schieffer. late this afternoon the associated press did report a member of al-qaeda's branch in yemen said the group directed the attack on charlie hebdo. that lets us know there could be other planned hits in the works. how do you think the world should respond? >> i think we have to take this very, very seriously, jan. this is a little different than what we've seen before. this is not people coming from one place and attacking another place like it was on 9/11. these are the homegrown terrorists that intelligence specialists have been telling us we had to expect. these are people that were from france, went to yemen and other places and got training and then came back to their home country to pull out these attacks. i think it means that the war on terror has reached yet another level and i must say a very dangerous level. so i think we have to be ready for more of this. >> charlie hebdo, the satirical newspaper, has not tweeted out anything since this attack and i read charlie hebdo plans a

bob schieffer is our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation." bob, what are you looking for tonight?epor >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, scott, the president is addressing a nation that is deeply divided. but it is fair to say most people are at least in a better humor than they were a year ago. the economy is better. wages are still stagnant, but unemployment is the lowest of the obama presidency and a million jobs were created over the last year. that is the good news. the president will talk a lot about make the tax code fairer raising taxes on rich people. republicans, he knows, will oppose most of that, but heat the wants to get it into the conversation. they were saying over at the white house today, if republicans have better ideas, then lay them out and we'll talk. expect a lot more talk-- action less probable. we're also told he will devote about a third of his speech to foreign policy. back at the beginning of the administration, his people had hoped that, by now, most of the troops would be back home, and the "war on terror," as they

and the president's senior adviser faced heavy skepticism when he pitched it to cbs news bob schieffero think this is for real? you think that there's a chance that something like this could pass? >> out of the economy is in a stronger place and it's been, we need to double down on the effort to deal with wage stagnation and declining economic mobility. so the simple proposition that we should ask the wealthy to pay a little more. >> clearly the president has more room to run given up recovering economy. which is lifted his approval rating to 50% in a new "washington post" abc news poll. the first time it has reached out i spring of 2013. get the same poll has danger signs for the president as well. when asked about his executive actions on immigration, 41% say that they should go forward. 56% say they should be blocked. then there is a question of how the president defines the middle class. in this case he wants a tax credit for couples where both parents are working if a family is earning a total bust in $120,000 per year, they get a 500-dollar credit, if you earn a total between 120
