bobby kennedy's political career. she urged bobby kennedy to run and president1964 in 1968. douglas: -- david: she was pregnant with john kennedy. jacqueline kennedy participated in a ritual we have been doing for some years, which is the first lady's outgoing give a tour to the new first lady. did eyes and our want to give a tour to jackie kennedy and if so, how did that door go? was the the problem white house by the time of 1961 was in shambles because it used to be anybody could take items out of the white house. it had gotten kind of stripped bare. i am not blaming eisenhower for that but all of the first lady's previously. nobody became a custodian of it. jackie kennedy was incredibly and to mainly eisenhower would be to all first ladies afterwards. she would visit the white house with lyndon johnson and lady bird, but later she became friendly with nancy reagan and would visit. she believed very much incivility and all first ladies needed to be, at their special club if you like. david: when she got her tour before the inauguration, did she come back and say it looks wonderful and does not need restoration or did she say we can fix it up a bit? david: maybe -- douglas: maybe we can fix it up a little bit. it was underwhelming, the door. and i say that in the way that jackie kennedy was not putting ice in our town. i come from wealth and i can make the white house look beautiful. she thought this should be repaired as a people's house as a repository for u.s. history. the arts needed to be upgraded and the objects in the white house should be administered by the smithsonian institution instead of it being done in a willy-nilly way, and she took this on because she had two children. she was not looking to go traveling with little kids, so she was in the white house a lot and it gave her a project to identify with, the beautification of the white house, and it becomes such a big event because not only does she do a first rate job. john f. kennedy did the same .hing with air force one he did this massive restoration. the white house look good, the rose garden look good. they were believers in the white house and the symbols of the presidency needed and upgrading, and of course they were so popular with newspapers and magazines that famously cbs news, evening program decided to sign ms. kennedy up to show the renovated white house to the american people because up until that point it was a closed house. most people could not imagine what the white house look like. david: that was one of the highest rated shows on tv at this time. she gave a tour of the white house she had helped restore, but where did she get the money for the restorations. it wasn't taxpayer money? what it come from? douglas: she found money around government to start instituting it. what she did was make it known that this would be a public-private partnership, that we would have a white house historical association. that is why we are celebrating her and we will make sure that the american people got educated on life at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. caughtshow had to have her by surprise. when it aired, the ratings that cvs got, television and not see anything like it. she would go on to win an emmy award for the show and it is that voice she had. that soft, feminine voice in some ways but it had a melodic tone to it. she of course always looked so beautiful in her wardrobe and fashion. became a symbol of modern sophistication. we use the word cool a lot but where jacqueline kennedy seemed cool, fashionable, cap and the frank sinatra way. said i wrote -- read jack kerouac on the road. no first lady would be that or that ae admired things modern painter was doing. she brought a sense of modernity to the white house in her persona. at the same time she was preserving artifacts of our national history. show, when she did that it was well received in part because very few people in those days had actually seen the inside of the white house because it was not something where television was that popular them. was it the unusual nature of seeing the white house that was part of the appeal or seeing her or the combination of things that made it popular? douglas: i think it is the combo, but you are asking the right question. to live inn had blair house part of the time. eisenhower got popular for camp david. attackwer had a heart and had been in denver for a while, would go golfing and flyfishing. right. in the age of television, the 1950's, nobody had ever seen the white house, what it was like and nobody had any feel for it everyonend suddenly was gazing as she led a guided tour. because of her children born so close together and she was a mother, you felt this sort of intimacy that you were seeing where the kennedys lived, and this new era of 1960's kennedy -- anything kennedy had pioneered the press conference. scott high ratings and space, with alan shepard and john glenn got booming ratings. minutesngs was only 15 of nightly news, but with the kennedys in the night house they expanded it to 30 minute nightly news cast because kennedy's work their time inen cape cod got mythologized and newport races got covered. whereame a moment in time the country was really enjoying the fact that 15 years had passed since world war ii ended, we were in the jet age and at the kennedys where this young couple with young kids and the fact that she was willing to be this sophisticated guide through the white house was irresistible must watch television at rating show that. david: remind people of how young she was when she became first lady? douglas: she was in her 30's and it is hard to imagine being a first lady that young. we think of first lady's being in their -- i think of eleanor roosevelt where you are at least in your 40's but you are in your 30's with two kids, and she did travel a lot. besides the white house restoration, which we are honoring on this particular of the things in tone and temperament we are but she was a rockstar globally. famously she-- went to france, latin america. most heads of state were interested in meeting her then they were john f. kennedy. quip aboute a famous that i think to khrushchev. they ended up gifting jackie a from one of the soviet dogs that went into space and gave a gift of the dog. the number of countries she went to. i marked them down here. it was not light. she just kept traveling and traveling and traveling abroad and became our great ambassador. timeas in india for a long with the ambassador, and wherever she went she got rave reviews. david: what was the famous line john kennedy gave in paris and what did she do to persuade the french to loan the mona lisa to the national gallery of art's? waslas: all she had to do ask. she was that popular in france. jack kennedy said everybody wants to see my wife. i am just an appendage. nobody even cares about me. they all care about her. there is no exaggerating how impressed the french were that finishingbeautiful school french, perfect french and that she had to read all of the french masterpieces, the literature i knew everything about french art. frankline, only ben had equaled that role in american history in an ambassadorial role in france was an important partner of the united states and this time, particularly with their vote in the united nations security council which you had britain and the united states usually voting together but you had china and russia sometimes together so france could be a deciding vote on security council issues. the role of nato in france. de gaulle was going to be developing his own nuclear force, france's role in africa. france was a very important country in that all of france was in love with the united states because of jackie kennedy. some oldere were buildings across the street from the white house that were going to be torn down and i think president kennedy went along with gsa's recommendation that they be torn down and new buildings rebuilt. what did she do to stop that from happening? douglas: she did not like anything being torn down. she actually did renovations and in saw some of the buildings that period of time seen as throwaway buildings, she sought they needed renovation and could have beautification. she really imagined, maybe not this moment with protest, things boarded up in front of the white house, but she imagined the area around lafayette park being brought into the white house. towas a part of washington explore and preserve in that same idea was being promoted by william douglas, supreme court justice, and when john kennedy was bit -- killed [indiscernible] and that part of washington along the mall and extended to all of d.c. an era of was beautification of federal property and federal buildings even while other neighborhoods in washington were experiencing blight. david: jackie kennedy like i culture and i think she was responsible for inviting pablo purcell to perform. without a famous evening? douglas: very famous dinner. john f. kennedy and jackie have the greatest dinners of all time . they put music at the forefront. they use to invite the best writers, poets, musicians, artists. it was a high water mark society. inaugural hedy's had robert frost read that inaugural poem. we had the pulitzer prize-winning novelist wallace egner writing government tablets. poet.anford, the great he was a regular guest. this became exciting. it is not just the restoration or refurbishing and touring the white house, but it made the white house seem to be the central place you wanted to be in the sense support diplomatic excellence, but also the sense of the power of performing arts. tribute no more fitting to john f. kennedy in my mind and the naming of the performing arts center. i know you work a lot with, but jackie kennedy is a big part of that spirit. david: toward the tragic last weekend president kennedy as jackie kennedy to accompany and to texas. why did he want jackie kennedy to come to them to texas? babyas: they had lost the in august of 1963. they would have had a third child and actually a fourth. the infant died, and she was depressed, and this trip to texas was a sort of reuniting of their marriage, rekindling to friendship, the love, the handholding to get over that loss in november was the beginning of a political season. it was a year out. texas was the all-important political state. one -- won texas. they went to texas and had a fabulous time by all accounts together as a loving couple. they were in san antonio houston for ain ,ongressman, albert delmas important for space appropriations but jackie kennedy not only spoke but she went and spoke to a latino group in spanish and she was getting cheered and everyone was commenting on how beautiful she looks. they had a big success in san antonio and houston and then they went to fort worth and spent their last night as a married couple and eight hotel there. it is commemorated, where they were and had a nice morning. then it made their way into dallas for that fateful drive in the convertible. wearusband used to have to back braces, but also she had to help him constantly with health problems, pain it is back. board so kennedy had a he could sit up straight. when you watch the assassination footage you could see he could not fall over normally because of that contraption on his back and she was wearing that pink suit and box at and that the having anybody's husband's brains blown out in front of you, and when they went to parkland hospital she wandered around there trying to see how her husband was doing at it refused to change her outfit. she continued to wear that bloody suit onto air force one and lyndon johnson would not take all from dallas without her on the plane and she -- he wanted to make sure she witnessed that swearingen that is such a famous photograph of johnson suddenly becoming president. she went back to being a grieving widow. where would jfk be buried? what are world leaders would come and mainly how do i protect my children from this particular horror. everybody believed jackie kennedy did a marvelous job of grace under pressure and that quality that john f. kennedy admired so much, ernest hemingway admired so much. she showed that quality throughout that funeral, but arlington, and after the burial she came to the white house to meet with lyndon johnson and lady bird and she had a request to keep jack's dream alive of going to the moon by the end of the decade and lyndon johnson said the first thing we are doing is renaming cape canaveral the kennedy space center and one geminireasons why the and apollo three cap aiming for the moon in 1960's is jackie kennedy wanted to see that part of her husband drove the guest dream fulfilled. david: one of the most iconic pictures of that funeral in november of 1963 it was little john kennedy saluting. who taught him how to salute and why is that pictures of famous? douglas: it is just a chiller because saluting. she was living around seeing his father saluted by everybody by the military at the salute goodbye to one's father was an image that broke the heart of america that made the country love john kennedy junior who himself died in an air crash. people had high hopes for him in politics. loss, of the isldren and the widow something about an american innocence gone quickly. books came out. kennedy allowed william manchester to write a book on the death of the president, about what happened and she tried to stop that book from coming out. she herself gave a very long oral history about her time as first lady for the kennedy library in boston, and in one as or another she helped out chief speechwriter and arthur's arthur schlesinger. she remained good friends with john kenneth galbraith and stewart udall, the secretary of interior when she was trying to heal went on rafting trips out west in the grand canyon and i know to get away, and she eventually we found herself after years of morning in helping bobby kennedy's political career but returning to her love of books and becoming an editor for doubleday. david: people forget how young she was when she was first lady. she was 31. president kennedy died when she was 34 but she tragically died at the age of 64. douglas: i thought about that today looking at her birthday. this is what we are celebrating. became a feature of tabloids in new york, probably the most sought after woman in the world. children making their marks and american life. i tend to think of her as living longer, but she died at that young age of 64 and succumbed to cancer and was never able to live that extra decade or two. i think people do not realize how young she died because she was such a young first lady that she had a bed with us as a public figure for many decades. welcome. you are muted. >> thank you very much. it was a wonderful conversation. one of the things i say i love about my job is i learn something new. we do have questions from our audience. a very ac
